Yesterday had periods of hard rain, periods of hail, some times with no precipitation but not with clear skies, and at least one dramatic burst of thunder, with one of the little hailstorms I think. Last year was the first since I have been gathering that they did not appear in profusion in the fall. |

There was a thundering of rain on the roof around 8, pouring rain, splashing up from the patio stones,but I noted no thunder or lightening. I think most of the 0.06 in the gauge came from those few moments when the sky opened and poured the rain down. It continues to rain, but with much less enthusiasm. No blue showing in the sky, but a promising brightness behind the clouds. 9am: Ok, I take it back. I went out to remove standing water from the ET gauge, and thunder was cracking. Just not loud enough to hear in the house. |

Another somber and wet day, light rain off and on has progressed to moderate steady rain, with gusts of high wind. I am preparing for the power to go off.
Deer this year seem very organized; have come through in groups of 6 or more, divide up efficiently with one group systematically stripping off all the asian pears, another group carefully eating every last tomato, cherry or big. Very little of the usual half eaten remains--- this group is thorough, and all plants are intact but fruitless, and they have not even broken all the fruit tree branches as they usually do. Trying to distinguish themselves from the bear and elk I guess. They bound away when my dog chases them, but quickly u-turn and return. Probably all a deer protest against the extensive clear cutting in the forests around me. |

The air continues full of water; unremitting rain. HIgh winds yesterday, not as intense yet today, gusts off and on. Power off much of yesterday, back on for two hours, then off until about 1 am. Enjoyed leftover pasta and chanterelles and hot cocoa warmed on the wood stove. |
