1/1/2013 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Rain! We hope for it all the time around here. I live on approximately 9,000 acres on this section of the ranch where my husband and I live and work. The last two years have been very dry. I have kept up with the rain fall amounts with my little rain guage from the local hardware store for many years, but now I have one of the CoCoRaHS rain guages and I am truly enjoying this. With my old rain guage we had 10 7/10's for "2011" and 9 6/10's for this year. I love having a pretty yard with plants, flowers and a small vegetable garden, but the last two years have almost been impossible and most all of my native ground cover and bermuda grass is gone even with watering it. Hopefully we will get one of our spring storms that we used to get with an abundant amount of rain to fill all the tanks with water. We have had to haul water to fill up water troughs for the cows this year and lay a water line. We do not have any under ground water on the part of the ranch where I live for many miles away. Even the little town of Mirando City does not have well water. I live about 13 miles from there. Well enough for now and I continue to watch the sky and pray for rain and the wildlife.

But the air out-side is full of moisture this morning but it is not falling. The air feels clean and fresh to us here because it stays full of dust and dirt because of our lack of much rain for so long. So even moisture in the air is appreciated.

I had a swarm of honey bees in my rain guage and could not get an accurate reading but my old guage that measures in tenths didn't even have a tenth in it and it had a bee in it too. Funny thing with the bees. I have to clean dead bugs quite frequently out of my guage.

The black flying bugs were fierce too. I don't know what they are but they are usually here on my porch later in the summer months when it stays above 100 degrees. I have a large covered porch and they like to stay on the ceiling and doors and drive us all crazy. This morning the sky is totally cloud covered and the sun is not visible but no promise of rain.

6/19/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mowed the yard for the first time this year. Just weeds growing a little tall, even they are struggling to stay alive. I have lost most of the Bermuda grass even with watering it. Nothing like water from the sky but I'm thankful too that we have well water. The buffal grass in the pastures that made it turned green and the cows were in paradise for a brief time. There is a little green left but turning brown fast. Sure hope Bill doesn't have to start burning pear again this time of year.

6/28/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We always get flies this time of year. But this year it seems to be twice as many. The dirt devils are stirring up the dirt all over. I stopped watering my little garden and I think it dried up to brown in one day without water. We not only have the heat, but we have the wind along with it. It dries everything up fast including the skin on our bodies. There has to be some benefits of this drought other than not having to mow, that we can't see. Maybe the satellites that orbit the earth can tell us.

7/29/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We don't use much lawn equipment here on the ranch I have a fenced in yard but can't keep enough water on it to have more than a few weeds. Even the cactus and succulents look bad. Mowed the weeds in the yard once last year and once this year. I water down two holes in the yard everyday so that my two dogs have a cool place to lay in the afternoons. Get it done in the mornings or leave it for tomorrow. That's the way life is here in the lower south Texas brush country, but even the brush is dying.

When you live in it, it is a "headline", but not worth mentioning much. I guess because drought is a slow process not fast and sudden. Maybe that is good in someways. We have time to get accustomed to our dire straights. Sorry if I sound cynical. I would rather be in a drought than a flood. Forgive me Father and help my brothers and sisters in their extreme weather conditions.
