31F, calm, 100% overcast. Uncomfortable with this reported precipitation data, since I cleared driveway app. 1400 on 1/30, removing 1"-plus, and saw that replaced with around another inch later in afternoon. So total of .7 (with .06 moisture content) since 0800 on 1/30 does not make sense, even with melting. Am relocating snowboard to avoid possible wind and sun distortion of actual new snowfall amounts. |

100% overcast, calm, not snowing (just stopped). Have to report an anomaly. Tube is mounted in same place this year as last, but have noticed that new snow THIS year accumulates at a 45-degree angle in tube, forcing me to estimate the level, versus last year, when new snow would more-evenly cover the full interior area of the tube, regardless of depth. 32F, calm, 100% overcast, not precipitating, but we have a slight covering on deck. Tube contents combination of water and ice. Total snow on ground is rough estimate of average from bare ground to depth of remaining piles of snow in yard. With forecasts calling for higher daytime and nighttime temps over the next few days, we are likely to lose all or almost all of the remaining yard snow--everything except solidified snow on wooden deck, concrete driveway, and ground where snow was either piled by shoveling or slipped off metal roof throughout the winter. For all practical purposes, spring has sprung! (And we still have two bags of wood pellets left, along with about 100 split pieces of wood from three cords purchased for winter.) |

Miserable day--but just got better when I downloaded this Cocorahs reporting app for android phones. Even better when I found an amazing free app called Nooly which uses nws and noaa data to forecast precip to within .4 mile of you every 10 mins and gives probability. Best of all, it is very accurate. I heartily recommend it to all Cocorahs observers! |

Light rain accompanied sudden materialization of a microburst wind from southeast shortly after 3 p.m. (just after I spread 25 lbs of grass seed on yard, aerated, de-thatched, fertilized, and spread five bales of straw over .26 acres. Winds blew about a bale of the straw to north and northwest, forcing me to rake up some of it from neighbor's yard.) Lasted only a few minutes, blew fair-sized branches off willows and offed tarps, but apparently did not bring down any large limbs. |

A 10-minute hailstorm dropped a surprising amount of stones up to 5/8ths of an inch (and, by some reports, as large as 3/4 of an inch) on Jackson Hole at around 3:45 yesterday. At some points in the storm the hail was so heavy that it resembled a dense rain. Apparently no significant damage resulted, although anyone caught outside when the skies darkened and the hail began to fall must have felt that to be a mistake. I had no hail pad out, but measured the stones with a ruler and took around 25 pix, sending seven edited digital images to Nolan Doesken at CSU and to the NWS in Riverton. There was no precipitation last night. (As I type this at 9:34 a.m., it is just beginning to rain in Rafter J--two miles south of Jackson.) |
