The forecast is for the return of a high pressure system and return of the near-eighty degree weather. I actually had to irrigate the Nativescapes Garden at the Safari Park this morning as the encelia and black sage were drooping. |

Although this very small amount of rain that has recently fallen will do nothing to lessen the drought here is Southern California (and, indeed, in much of the state) I will be interested to see if it is enough to boost some of the native plants through a reasonably normal-ish growth cycle, which will end with viable seeds or reproductive parts to see the plants into the future. Our native vegetation is bred to withstand many harsh conditions; however, is too many pile up too quickly, the landscape can change and unwanted and destructive invasive species invade what was once a hardy environment. |

It seems that the temperature and humidity, excerpt for the rare variations, remains about what they are today:66 degrees at 7am and humidity at 89%. Yesterday afternoon thunderheads built bright and white against the eastern horizon but flattened out and dissipated by late in the afternoon. I am personally predicting that they will gradually, over the next several days, be less and less prominent. The afternoon breezes have kept my immediate area very pleasant for this period of the summer. |

The unexpected thunderstorm dropped a small amount of rain on my gauge but produced wonderful thunder for hours on end. I never saw lightning, but the local NWS representative reported that between 400 and 500 lightning strikes were counted, including some at the beaches which caused them to be closed. Although the hurricane in Baja is producing big waves here in San Diego and farther north in the LA beaches, our weather seems to be pretty consistent with what is to be expected in this season: clear skies, seasonally hot temperatures, no build-up of thunderheads in the east, reasonably cool nights. Perhaps in the next day or two, the remnants of the hurricane will drift north in the form of some welcome rains. But maybe not. |

The local clouds are part of the second hurricane which is located more inland and south of us, but perhaps with luck we will get rain.

This morning began with light overcast which seemed to hint at a little cooler day than we have had this week as we have been affected by the fringes of hurricane Odile. Even though my immediate area in San Diego County was not in the path of the hurricane, the fringes produced spotty but violent weather in various places in the county; however, nothing in my immediate area. The daily highs have been very high with uncomfortable conditions overall. Thus, this morning's overcast was a somewhat short-lived hope that the worst was over. It's unknown if this trend will last as we are entering the Fall dry season, typical, where the Santa Ana winds and very low humidity grip the area. But for now, this cool mornings are refreshing.
