10/4/2013 7:00 AM 0.84 3.2 M 3.0 M Tmax: 57; Tmin; 27. Rain drops started after 6pm, right after my arrival from Boulder. Became more intense an hour later, with a genuine thunder clap and heavy rain around 8pm (0.20" by 9pm), more rain (0.12") through about 1am (MDT) when it was starting to change to snow. It was foggy for much of the late evening/early night. Wet snow (0.34/1.4") through 3am, then more regular 10:1 snow since then (0.18/1.8). Temperature in high 20sF right now, and a break in the snow. Will be interesting to see how much 'backwash' snow we will get today, as the cold air will be coming in from the N(NW). First measurable snow of the season, off to a late start as has become typical in last five years or so.
10/5/2013 7:00 AM 0.02 0.2 M 2.0 M Tmax: 35 as of 1am MDT yesterday, and 32F since 7am yesterday; Tmin: 19F just before midnight/20F afterwards (quite the wind chill). Breezy through last night, but still occasional snow showers past midnight. Typical snow cover pattern in early fall, with exposed "warm" ground melting out ("aper"), while shaded areas remained fully covered yesterday. This ended up being a historic snowstorm for the Black Hills, with over 4' for the 'usual suspect' and 1,000s of dead cattle.
10/6/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 31. One more (light) freeze, but still chilly during the day and breezy.
10/7/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 56; Tmin: 38. Hiked about a mile east of here in the watershed below yesterday, dramatic signs of erosion from our recent flood about 500' below our elevation (whole trees washed away by a normally seasonally disappearing creek). Will need to document more of this before the snows cover everything up. Otherwise, 'nice fall weather', with many aspen leaves already blown off their trees, but still enough to make it very pleasant hiking. Boulder Canyon finally reopened last night, so now we can make the 1h trek on paved roads instead of washboards...
10/8/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 64 (high for the month); Tmin: 44. Indian Summer weather - snow is gone.
10/9/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 62; Tmin: 35. More Indian Summer weather.
10/10/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 53; Tmin: 31. Cooling off a bit, lots of clouds this morning.
10/11/2013 7:00 AM 0.10 0.7 M T M Tmax: 47; Tmin: 31. Early afternoon thunderstorm (around 2pm) with several thunderclaps, and 0.03" of rain. Evening FroPa around 7pm left 0.7" on my snowboard 2h later when it was still flurrying. Temperature dropped to just below freezing with that, but rose overnight, along with serious winds (estimated gusts to 60mph) that dropped quite a few dead trees in neighborhood. This year has had more than its fair share of nocturnal thunderstorms, but to have it this late in the season is quite unusual. There was spill-over snow leading up to the thunderstorm, starting around 7pm, but much less for us than near Ward (drove thru it on P2P). Breezy this morning, surprisingly mild.

Some morning flurries were followed by most intense wind gusts of the weekend (someone in an exposed area near Rock Lake (<0.5 miles from our house) measured 87mph. Lots of felled trees, I am sure glad we had some dead ones cut down last month. Enough melting during the day (in the sun) to create some patches of ice where the wind/sun had reduced snow cover, now down to about 80%. Winds died down in afternoon.

12/4/2013 7:00 AM 0.53 9.6 M 9.0 M Tmax: 34; Tmin: -6 (coldest of season so far; -1 by midnight last night). Got home in time for 1.7/0.12" by 4pm (snow on ground averaged 4" at that time, so the old snow had survived). As best as I can tell, spill-over snow had started around noon and steadily increased as afternoon progressed. Temperature had dropped to 17F by then, and heavier snowfall rates continued through about 8pm (additional 4.7"/0.21" by 9pm). The next 6h or so only gave a few 1/10" of snow, along with temperatures dropping below 0F by midnight. Heavier snow came back in early morning, totaling another 3.2/0.20" by 7am. Still snowing lightly this morning.

Polar snow all day (10:1 ratio), ending only in late evening as temperatures dropped well below 0F. Interesting pick up in winds around 8pm when temperatures rose from near -10F to above 0F in just a few minutes while snow was blown from the trees (maybe some gravity flow of cold air into the canyon below). Sunny, cold, and calm this morning.

Expecting a sub-zero day tomorrow/-10F tomorrow night, unless it gets blowing too hard too soon.
1/5/2014 7:00 AM 0.25 3.7 M 10.0 M Tmax: 11 during day-time yesterday after midnight reading of 27; Tmin; -4 before midnight/-2 since then. Snow continued thru about 6pm, a bit more than expected. Total moisture/snow in 18h: 8.5/0.57" (or 0.25" more H2O than in all January 2013!). Temperature dropped below 0F for a few hours last evening, before rebounding back above most of the night. The really cold air is still coming in today, would not be surprised if temperature stay below the early morning "high" temperatures all day. A few 1/10" of snow should also fall, but not much more than that. Very steady 15:1 ratio of snow:moisture in this event. Hit peak snow depth of 11" last evening - skiable!

1/17/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.5 M Tmax: 30/ Tmin: 19. 2nd dry and breezy day
1/18/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.5 M Tmax: 32; Tmin: 21 yesterday morning/24 since midnight. 3rd dry day in a row, and last of five days below freezing in a row. Still breezy yesterday.
1/19/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.0 M Tmax: 40/ Tmin: 25 yesterday morning/27 since midnight. Went to Redstone yesterday to get out of the midwinter blahs on Front Range. Snow in Spring Gulch XC ski area is quite decent (1-2' everywhere), just above freezing during day-time, and 10s at night.
1/20/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.0 M Tmax: 41 (high for the month)/ Tmin: 24. Skied McClure's yesterday, seemed like March than January (snow got sticky in mid-day sun), with south-facing slopes turning aper right by the SNOTEL site. Overall snow depth is decent for January (2.5-3' or so). While we were gone, it apparently turned windy again at this site.
1/21/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.0 M Tmax: 37/ Tmin: 25. Another dry day, cooling down a bit, and not as windy as on the 19th.
1/22/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.0 M Tmax: 39; Tmin: 24. Quite windy ahead of a storm, back in Boulder for one day before getting back here tonight.
1/23/2014 7:30 AM 0.10 3.7 M 7.5 M Tmax: 30/ Tmin: -1 right at observing time (11F by midnight last night). Models overforecast liquid amount, but there sure was a lot of air in between the water crystals... Not windy for one day, and wintery morning with subzero low. Snow apparently began around 7pm (got home by 8pm, with 0.2" estimated so far. Did two measurements: Midnight: 2.5/0.05(!); and 1.2/0.05" this morning (snow ended well before sunrise).
1/24/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 7.0 M Tmax: 20/Tmin: -1 yesterday morning / +20 since midnight(!). Remained cold and calm (weak upslope) most of day, before westerlies broke through late in evening to raise Tmax to 20F. Left in evening. Snow depth back to being estimated.
1/25/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 6.5 M Tmax: 36 / Tmin: 22 yesterday morning/28 since midnight. Continued breezy (chinooky in Boulder), snow hanging in there, waiting for our next storm.
1/26/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 6.5 M Tmax: 41 (tied for warmest day of the month) / Tmin: 25. Continued breezy ahead of next storm.
1/27/2014 7:45 AM 0.18 3.8 M 9.0 M Tmax: 36; Tmin: 02F (!). FroPa around 5pm, with temperatures dropping 4.5C in 20 minutes. Snow began around or just after 6pm, less intense than last time, but still quite fluffy (0.04/1.3" by midnight). Picked up overnight, my belated morning total was 0.14/2.5" by 7:45am. Still snowing steadily this morning, expect to see just about as much by tonight.
1/28/2014 7:00 AM 0.36 6.0 M 11.5 M Tmax: 09F (!)/ Tmin: -8F this morning (-5F by midnight). Snow ended by 9pm, it was heaviest around mid-day when we hit 1"/h for a few hours. Clear and calm early in the night to let us drop well below zero by 2am, the time of the minimum. Breezy this morning, with a fresh layer of snow on the board that I attribute to snow blown off trees. Peak snow depth: 13" last evening, settling overnight. One little tidbit: January 28, 2013 through January 27, 2014 totaled 40.01" of moisture, a new record (since 1990).
1/29/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 10.5 M Tmax: 17/ Tmin: 0F yesterday morning/16 since midnight. Blowing snow yesterday morning, then I had to leave; temperatures dropping to 10F in the evening, before rising overnight. Snow depth estimated.
1/30/2014 7:00 AM 0.17 2.4 M 12.0 M Tmax: 34 / Tmin: 20. Spill-over snow last night, after being quite windy all day, but not as bad as in Boulder (NCAR Mesa Lab hit 85mph). Still flurrying this morning (based on neighbor's observations). Much less snow than in Nederland, as is typical for many of these spill-over situations. Ward also got in that neighborhood of 7" overnight, based on eyeball estimates from commuters. Much anticipated storm has hit the mountains, will be interesting to see how much ends up on the east side.
1/31/2014 7:00 AM 0.43 4.3 M 14.0 M Tmax: 30 / Tmin: 7F. Moist storm (10:1 ratio) and less than the NWS predicted (I certainly did not like the way the models were backpedaling on this yesterday - for this region, different story for the mountains). Snow ended just a few hours after midnight (0.08/0.8" measured in that period). This is a good addition to our base, finally some snow that can't be moved as easily by wind. I was here from 7pm onwards, the previous two days are reconstructed from neighbor's measurements.
2/1/2014 7:00 AM 0.14 3.0 M 15.0 M Tmax: 25F for Day 2 of the longest below-freezing string of the winter / Tmin: 09... Fluffy snow overnight, starting after sunset, and still snowing lightly this morning. Very wintery feel up here after almost two feet in last 11 days. January ended up with 33.1/2.09", 2nd only to 1996 (which was almost obscenely snowy with 56"),
2/2/2014 7:00 AM 0.02 1.2 M 15.0 M Tmax: 19 / Tmin: 00F mid-evening/02F since midnight. Very fluffy snow (60:1 ratio!) ended mid-day, with only a few flurries later. We even had an hour or so of sunshine around and after noon. Best skiing of the season so far behind our house. A bit breezy this morning (blowing snow off trees at times).
2/3/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 14.0 M Tmax: 21 / Tmin: 07F. Off to AMS, there may have been a trace of snow today; Snowdepth based on previous evening.
2/4/2014 7:00 AM 0.09 2.0 M 14.5 M Tmax: 21 / Tmin: 05F. Liquid estimated based on total on my return on the 6th (0.21), snowfall measurements by neighbor, snowdepth estimated.
2/5/2014 7:00 AM 0.07 1.0 M 15.0 M Tmax: 09 or lower during the day-time / Tmin: -23F early this morning, coldest of the season, and since February 2011, as well as a new record low for so late in the season. Liquid and snowdepth estimate, snowfall by neighbor.
2/6/2014 7:00 AM 0.05 0.5 M 14.5 M Tmax: 03 (2nd coldest of the season) / Tmin: -11 yesterday at 7am / -3 since midnight. Same procedure, arrived back from AMS late today to anchor snow depth and liquid measurements.
2/7/2014 7:00 AM T T M 14.0 M Tmax: 19 / Tmin; 09 yesterday morning/15 since midnight. Spill-over flurries overnight, starting to accumulate this morning. Continuing warm-up, and pretty strong inversion compared to the plains and even lower foothills.
2/8/2014 7:00 AM 0.12 2.0 M 15.5 M Tmax: 27 / Tmin: 19 since midnight/16 yesterday morning. Was here to observe day-time snow (0.8/0.04" by 5pm), it was really picking up around that time, and apparently lingered into mid-evening for remainder (reconstructed from neighbor's measurements).
2/9/2014 7:00 AM 0.26 3.4 M 17.0 M Tmax: 30 / Tmin: 21. Spill-over snow continued most of day, having a hard time accumulating during middle of day, although temperature did not break freezing. Most of the snow fell overnight.
2/10/2014 7:00 AM 0.19 2.2 M 17.5 M Tmax: 34 (1st day above freezing after 10 days below) / Tmin: 21. Some sleet mixed in last morning, as well as last evening when I returned to measure the last 0.5" overnight. Evening snow depth: 18". This has been a very snowy period - calendar day's 26 January thru 9 Feb (15 days): 31.2/2.05". Running 365 day H2O-total now in excess of 41", breaking new records almost every day. Will settle peak value when we dry out later this week.
2/11/2014 7:00 AM 0.02 0.3 M 17.0 M Tmax: 32 / Tmin: 13 last evening/15 since midnight. Lingering light snow showers yesterday, ending late in evening. Breezy this morning.
2/12/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 16.0 M Tmax: 26 / Tmin: 17. Finally, a dry day (or so it seems, I was in Boulder, this is based on neighbor's observations).
2/13/2014 7:00 AM 0.03 0.3 M 15.5 M Tmax: 30 / Tmin: 26 since midnight/22 yesterday morning. Spill-over snow and plenty of wind...
2/14/2014 7:00 AM 0.08 0.9 M 15.5 M Tmax: 37 / Tmin: 20. More significant spill-over snow...
2/15/2014 7:00 AM 0.07 0.5 M 15.0 M Tmax: 36 / Tmin: 21 yesterday morning / 32 since midnight. Snow and sleet ended before midnight. Still windy.
2/16/2014 7:00 AM T T M 14.0 M Light spill-over precipitation, but apparently not accumulating. Tmax: 41 / Tmin: 26 in early evening/29 since midnight. Skied Monarch yesterday, decent conditions, but hard to recognize that there is a base of 100"!
2/17/2014 7:00 AM 0.10 1.4 M 15.0 M Evening snow from about 4-10pm, got pretty fluffy near end. Got back to measure snow, and notice a fairly crusty pack from all the day-time melting. Tmax: 42 is the highest of 2014 so far/Tmin: 16. Update on running 365-day precipitation totals: 41.25", a new all-time record, measured from 17feb'13 thru 16feb'14.
2/18/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 14.0 M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 30 since midnight/24 yesterday morning. There may have been a flurry yesterday. along with lots of wind, especially late (neighbor measured gusts to 54mph).
2/19/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 13.5 M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 23 right around midnight. Still windy (G48 at neighbor's) and dry. Snow depth is estimated.
2/20/2014 7:00 AM 0.08 1.1 M 14.0 M Tmax: 39; Tmin: 7F. Got home in time to measure this snow by 9pm. Some flurries after that, also this morning, as it dipped below 10F. One last tidbit: 20 February 2013 thru yesterday set a new 365-day moisture record with 41.33"!!! Since it got wet starting on the 20th of February last year, I believe this might be the one (for now).
2/21/2014 7:00 AM 0.02 0.3 M 14.0 M Tmax: 16; Tmin: 13 since midnight/8F yesterday morning. Very windy late (G56 at neighbor's); measured snow on board later on the 21st and attributed moisture/snow to morning spill-over that is consistent with neighboring CoCoRAHS reports.
2/22/2014 7:00 AM T T M 14.0 M Tmax: 26; Tmin; 17 since midnight/16 yesterday morning. Light spill-over snow last evening after another breezy day, some flurries in the air this morning as well. Expected more today, but ended with more than advertised in any model...
2/23/2014 7:40 AM 0.24 4.3 M 17.0 M Tmax: 28; Tmin: 17. Very light snow all day, leading up to decent shower that dropped 2.2" in about 1.5h around 3:30-5pm, followed by continued light snow into the night (1.6" by midnight, another 0.5" since then). Breezy this morning, still more flurries in air than just blowing off trees. FWIW, the running 365-day total is still quite impressive at 41.29" through the 23rd of February (there was no more measurable snow after morning reading).
2/24/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 16.5 M Tmax: 36; Tmin: 22 yesterday morning/27 since midnight. Still windy (G44 at neighbor's), but apparently no new snow. Snow depth estimated.
2/25/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 15.5 M Tmax: 42 (ties for high of the month); Tmin: 14F last evening, then warmer overnight (23F since midnight). Still dry and estimated snow depth.
2/26/2014 7:00 AM 0.14 2.0 M 16.0 M Tmax: 37 in mid-morning before strong cold FroPa; Tmin: 01F in evening/03F after midnight. Snow fell in evening, measured at 10pm, with only a trace later than that. Rising temperatures overnight, spring-like snow conditions later this morning.
2/27/2014 7:00 AM T T M 15.5 M Tmax: 38 (big warm-up after low down to 1F the evening before); Tmin: 22.
2/28/2014 7:00 AM 0.02 0.2 M 15.5 M Tmax: 40; Tmin: 26. Spill-over snow off and on from late afternoon onwards, flurries this morning (and not much to show for it).
3/1/2014 7:00 AM T T M 15.0 M Tmax: 39; Tmin: 9F.
3/2/2014 7:00 AM 0.17 2.5 M 17.0 M Tmax: 34; Tmin: 21 since midnight/17 yesterday morning. Snow fell in mid-morning (0.10 liquid showed up in gage from melted snow), while total snowfall was measured late on snowboard. This is probably a low-ball figure.
3/3/2014 7:00 AM T T M 16.5 M Tmax: 40; Tmin: 23 yesterday morning. Very light graupel shower in afternoon, just before returning to Boulder (this was a Sunday).
3/4/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 16.0 M Tmax: 40; Tmin: 24. Non-descript day, probably dry, and breezy as usual this winter. Snow depth estimated.
3/5/2014 7:00 AM 0.42 7.3 M 20.5 M Tmax: 42; Tmin: 17. Got home in time for this event which started right after 6pm, became heavy from about 8:30-10:20pm, and produced the following measurements: 2.6" (0.18) by 9:10pm, 3.2" one hour later (0.16), and 1.5" (0.08) overnight. Peak snow depth hit 21" around midnight. Blue sky and a little wind this morning. {I realize that the frequency of measurements was higher than CoCoRAHS -typical, but then again, not living up here for much of the time, I figure I am probably too conservative (infrequent measurements) for many other occasions}. Deepest snowpack of the season, exceeding 1.5' for the 1st time. Nothing too unusual, but this may not be the year where we would want to break records on that front either...
3/6/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 19.0 M Tmax: 35; Tmin: 22 yesterday morning/26 since midnight. In between storms - not too windy, and dry.
3/7/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 18.0 M Tmax: 46 (warmest day of the year so far!); Tmin: 26. Dry and breezy... Snowpack settling.
3/8/2014 7:00 AM 0.61 6.7 M 22.0 M Tmax: 34 for calendar day, but below freezing (about 29F) after 7am; Tmin: 15. Wet storm started in morning, never got heavy but continued around 0.5"/h for most of daylight, perhaps heaviest around 4pm when there was also some sort of FroPa (a bit more wind and a temperature drop by a few F). Blue sky and calm this morning. Peak snow depth: 23" last evening. Before I forget: a new 365day running total record: 41.35"!
3/9/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 20.5 M Tmax: 35; Tmin: 17 yesterday morning/27 since midnight MST. While it did not get much above freezing yesterday, the sun really 'cooked' the snow. Snow depth estimated.
3/10/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 19.5 M Tmax: 47 (highest of 2014 so far); Tmin: 35 (1st above freezing in 2014). Warming up and breezy. Snow depth estimated.
3/11/2014 7:00 AM T T M 18.0 M Tmax: 50 (warmest day of the year so far, and 1st at or above 50F since November 13th); Tmin: 24. Flurries in the air this morning (based on neighbor's observations). Drastic cool-down in store. Snow depth estimated.
3/12/2014 7:00 AM 0.10 1.2 M 19.0 M Tmax: 37 before 7am yesterday/after that below-freezing (again about 29F); Tmin: 4F(!). Disappointing storm, looks like we were off by half a county or so... Snow fell mostly during mid-morning. Definitely nothing after I returned home by 7pm MST. Clear, cold, and calm this morning.
3/13/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 18.5 M Tmax: 38 (after morning-low of 4); Tmin: 18 since midnight/09F yesterday at 7am. First of a string of dry days. Snow depth estimated.
3/14/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 18.0 M Tmax: 40; Tmin: 20. Breezy and dry. Snow depth estimated.
3/15/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 17.0 M Tmax: 42; Tmin: 24. Dry cold front expected, still breezy. Snow depth estimated.
3/16/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 17.0 M Tmax: 34; Tmin: 16 before midnight/17 afterwards. Finally a snow depth measurement instead of an educated guess...
3/17/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 16.5 M Tmax: 41; Tmin: 22 yesterday morning/27 since midnight. Still dry, still breezy. Back to snow depth estimates.
3/18/2014 7:00 AM 0.02 0.4 M 16.0 M Tmax: 47; Tmin: 16. Spill-over snow overnight, quite windy, so this is fraught with more uncertainty than usual (based on neighbor's measurements). Snow depth is still estimated.
3/19/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 16.0 M Tmax: 27; Tmin: 8. First calendar day below freezing of March on 18th. Windy. Snow depth estimated.
3/20/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 15.5 M Tmax: 35; Tmin: 25 since midnight/19 yesterday morning. Still chilly and back to dry. Snow depth estimated.
3/21/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 15.0 M Tmax: 42; Tmin: 25. Windy. Snow depth estimated.
3/22/2014 8:00 AM 0.04 0.5 M 15.5 M Tmax: 34; Tmin: 14. Got home in time for this one, much less than predicted, barely 0.01/0.1" by midnight MST, and light snow this morning, but some sunshine coming thru as well.
3/23/2014 7:00 AM 0.18 2.8 M 17.5 M Tmax: 23 (coldest Tmax of March); Tmin: 7F before midnight/9F since midnight (windy). Snow ended right around sunset, with only a few flurries after that. Snowpack still skiable, with the usual thin spots (for late March).
3/24/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 16.0 M Tmax: 39; Tmin: 12 (not quite as windy). Snow depth estimated.
3/25/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 15.5 M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 13, not as breezy as before. Chilly nights for late March. Snow depth is measured, getting ready for trip to Columbine, back to 'snow country'.
3/26/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 14.5 M Tmax: 48; Tmin: 25 yesterday morning/28 since midnight. Pacific storm coming in, will probably not do much east of the divide, expect a lot more in Columbine. Snow depth estimated.
3/27/2014 7:00 AM 0.03 0.4 M 14.0 M Tmax: 49; Tmin: 24. Snowfall overnight, snow depth estimated. We had about 6" in Columbine last evening, and another 1" before sunrise. Snowpack is shoulder-deep (!) at 8.7K, but slushy underneath fresh snow (must have been a mild March). For this time of year (late March), only 2011 had more snow on the ground in six visits since 2007, but this snowpack is the ripest (slushiest) I can remember.
3/28/2014 7:00 AM 0.08 1.1 M 15.0 M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 18. Snowfall based on neighbor's measurements, while snow depth is estimated. Columbine was still pretty mild (near or even slightly above freezing during mid-day), with snow and graupel showers in PM, steadier in evening with about 4" by midnight, and another 1" by sunrise when it was the coldest (around 20F?) of our stay.
3/29/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 14.0 M Tmax: 35; Tmin: 22 yesterday morning/25 this morning. Columbine kept getting snow showers before departure at noon, perhaps another 2" of fluff (finally powder) for a storm total of 14", much more than closer to Steamboat Springs. Skied on top of Rabbit Ears, excellent conditions (no slush underneath the fresh snow at 9.5K+ elevation), with some blue trail markers poking barely a foot above snowpack... Sunny and a little breezy this morning. Our snowpack is starting to break up, but still >70% in backyard. Looks like we will end up with another disappointing (dry) March - will a wet April follow like last year? Running 365 day total has dropped from 41.35" a couple of weeks ago to just above 40" right now (still unheard of amounts before 2014). There might have been a few flurries during the day yesterday, did not get back here until late evening, with nothing left on gage or snowboard.
3/30/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 13.0 M Tmax: 46; Tmin: 27 yesterday morning/28 this morning. Snow depth estimated.
3/31/2014 7:00 AM 0.12 1.3 M 13.0 M Tmax: 52 (warmest of the month/year so far); Tmin: 22. The snow fell last evening, probably in 1h or less (was in Boulder), measurement of liquid taken later today, snowfall total based on neighbor's measurement this morning. Snow depth estimated.
4/1/2014 7:00 AM T T M 12.0 M Tmax: 36; Tmin: 18. A few flurries, March ends like a lamb...
4/2/2014 7:00 AM T T M 11.0 M Tmax: 41; Tmin: 16. Mid-day instability (graupel/snow) showers, but just shy of 0.1". Snow depth estimated, getting ready for what could be the snowiest storm of the season so far, depending on model. And I am not just writing this because I have already observed that...
4/3/2014 7:20 AM 1.01 14.4 M 22.0 M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 18. After a slow start (only a trace by the time I got home at 8:35pm MDT), the snow got going in earnest around 9:15pm, exceeding 3"/h for a while (9.2"/0.61" by 1am MDT), dropping below 1"/h between 3 and 5am MDT, and pretty much over by my observing time at 7:20am MDT. First 24h total over a foot this season. Morning snow depth ties my record for the season, first set on March 8.
4/4/2014 7:00 AM 0.02 0.3 M 20.5 M Tmax: 31; Tmin: 11 (right after midnight). A few light snow showers yesterday, with some snow pellets/graupel included. Clear, calm, and cold right around midnight, before drainage flow, followed by wave cloud and westerlies reestablished the 'natural order (flow)' of things around here. Wave cloud kept it cool thru about noon MDT today (oops, that should go into tomorrow's report).
4/5/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 18.0 M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 21. Snow depth estimated.
4/6/2014 7:00 AM 0.02 0.2 M 16.0 M Tmax: 40; Tmin: 22. Snow fell yesterday PM. Snow depth estimated.
4/7/2014 7:00 AM 0.02 0.3 M 14.5 M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 20. A few flurries last evening, apparently a bit heavier before sunrise. There is still some snow in trees, that's how cold (and not windy) it has been. Big warm-up this week - will it be warm enough to trace out?
4/8/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 14.0 M Tmax: 39; Tmin: 25 yesterday at 7am/29 since midnight. Snow depth estimated.
4/9/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 13.0 M Tmax: 50; Tmin: 33 yesterday morning/38 since midnight. Snow depth estimated; warm-up underway...

4/13/2014 7:00 AM 0.33 3.0 M 12.0 M Tmax: 53; Tmin: 24 (midnight reading of 30F will end up being the calendar day Tmax of April 13). Drizzle last evening (0.02"; first measurable rain of 2014), changing over to snow before midnight (MST), remaining fairly light until after 3am MST. Steady light snow this morning, this one does not 'feel' as big as the last one. Almost all ice has vanished from our lakes (the smallest/shadiest one is apparently still mostly ice-covered), and snow cover had shrunk to about 60%+ before this event.
4/14/2014 7:00 AM 0.52 9.7 M 17.5 M Tmax: 24 (morning reading); Tmin: -1F (rare for April, and colder than in all of March). Snow all day, first quite dense (2.7/0.26" by 1pm MDT), then turning fluffy as temperatures drop during afternoon. Never reached 1"/h, but came close during early evening (around 7pm MDT) when the temperature dropped the fastest, and 3.1" from 5-9pm melted down to a mere 0.07". Clear, calm, and frigid this morning. Storm total was 12.7/0.85", 2nd one-footer this season (and month). Our biggest lake partially refroze last night, while the smallest and shadiest had never really melted out, so that now there is a new layer of snow to protect the ice. Snow depth varies from 7” (settled snow on ground that was bare before the storm hit) to over 2’.
4/15/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 12.5 M Tmax: 30 (3rd high below freezing this month - one more than in March!); Tmin: 11 yesterday at 7am/22 since midnight (getting windy). Snow depth extrapolated from late afternoon measurement on previous day (this snow settled fast).

4/20/2014 7:00 AM 0.27 0.0 M T M Tmax: 52; Tmin: 32. Tricky rainfall measurement, got home to a tipped gage (not more than 30° angle), presumably this happened before the rain yesterday (which fell from mid-afternoon until late evening). Extrapolated from 0.21" measurement to value indicated, might be too low. Snow cover now below 50%, for the first time since 14 November 2014(!). Some of the 'beached whales' still measure a foot deep or more in the middle. Most of the local lakes are open now, except for the shadiest one that is still 95% frozen(!). As best as I can tell this was the first precipitation event of 2014 without the frozen phase in it...
4/21/2014 7:00 AM 0.16 0.0 M T M Tmax: 55; Tmin: 29. This rain fell in afternoon, I drove in and out of the showers on the way to Boulder around 4pm.

4/29/2014 7:00 AM T T M T M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 22. Snowflurries mid-day yesterday, was gone after that. Neighbor's wind gage gusted to 38mph.

5/8/2014 7:00 AM 0.38 0.2 M T M Tmax: 46; Tmin: 25. Thunderstorms much of the day - as best as I can tell from neighbor's video feed, we had accumulating hail around noon that did not quite melt by the time I got home around 8pm. However, the portion of this that got stuck in the top funnel only amounted to 0.04" when I melted it. The accumulating snow fell after midnight (0.2/0.02"), a bit disappointing. This 17 day spell of non-measurable precipitation was unprecedented for this time of year.

5/12/2014 7:00 AM 1.14 15.2 M 15.0 M Tmax: 28 after 7am (calendar daily high was 34F at midnight yesterday morning); Tmin: 19. Highest snowfall rates right around midnight when it was also the fluffiest. Daytime high in the 20s very unusual, and winds mostly from the east, occasionally gusty (no power outages to report). Will go skiing this morning, a rare treat for this time of year, to celebrate the highest 24h snowfall total of the season. Still snowing as I type this.
5/13/2014 7:00 AM 0.21 4.2 M 16.0 M Tmax: 29 (record latest Tmax <0C); Tmin: 10 (would have been a record for May if it had not been for last year's early May record; now it's just the coldest so late in the season!). Updated entry, we apparently had another 0.05/0.7" last evening. Revised storm totals: 22.9/2.12" - biggest 2d May snow total on record (24 years), but not in top 3 for moisture. Broke trail for my latest XC ski from my house ever. Deepest snow during mid-day averaged 17". This morning's snow depth estimated.

Hail may have been involved, too, don't know.
5/26/2014 7:00 AM 0.31 T M 0.0 M Tmax: 53; Tmin: 34 (like a broken record). Most of this fell between 12:50 and 1:45am MDT, with lots of lightning and pea-sized hail. Not only was the timing unusual, it was also quite cold, in the upper 30sF!
5/27/2014 7:00 AM 0.24 T M 0.0 M Tmax: 57; Tmin: 40. Most of this fell in early afternoon in under 1h, and with a good amount of pea-sized hail. Monthly total now up to 5.11", surpassing 1996 by 0.01" for the 2nd wettest May on record (1995 had 8.78").

7/27/2014 7:00 AM 0.31 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 76; TMin: 46. As best as I can tell, we had 0.05" around 3pm MDT, followed by a quick-hitting thunderstorm around 7-7:30pm that dropped 0.26" on us (was here for that). No hail, but nice cool-down into low 50s with that.
7/28/2014 7:00 AM 0.18 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 67; Tmin; 46. 0.02" around noon MST, another 0.15" in the evening, and 0.01" after midnight.

7/30/2014 8:20 AM 1.11 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 67; Tmin: 46. Tuesday was a bit underwhelming in light of various forecasts: 0.24" by the time I got here (9:45pm), another 0.23" by 1am, but steady rain since then, with another 0.64" by 8:20am. Raining, foggy, and upper 40s this morning. Noticed no hail or thunder since getting home.
7/31/2014 7:00 AM 0.88 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 49 (record-low Tmax, impressive for late July); Tmin: 41. A bit underwhelming precip-total in the end, compared to Boulder especially. Looks like this rain petered out by midnight yesterday. Diurnal range for yesterday was 4F, the lowest on record for July, perhaps even ever (will check that tomorrow). This also sealed the books on one of the wetter and colder July's on record (4.62" of rain displaces 2013 from 5th rank).

8/7/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 75; Tmin: 44. Drying breeze (G28 at neighbor's gage), warmest day of the month so far.
8/8/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 69; Tmin: 45 (surprisingly warm considering neighbor's 42.8F). Showers in the region, but assumed to be nothing here, based on neighbor's wunderground station.

8/10/2014 7:00 AM 0.03 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 74; Tmin: 43. Found in gage last evening after driving through a heavy rain shower in Jamestown around 8pm. There is a small chance that some of this fell two days ago, but decided against it based on neighboring gage.
8/11/2014 7:00 AM 0.13 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 64; Tmin: 41. Rain fell in mid-afternoon. Experienced a wild hail storm below Lake Isabelle around 1pm, similar to what Gilpin County Station 17 describes for about one hour later. Started out as a graupel and changed to pea- to grape-sized (0.25-0.5") hail within a minute or two after which multiple lightning strikes and hail continued for about half an hour or a bit longer, only to leave 1-2" of hail/slush on trail (much less near Long lake trailhead, perhaps 0.5" at most). Interestingly, the hail never changed to rain, and some of the thunder was rolling around the clouds overhead for several seconds at a time (after taking less than a second between lightning and thunder to start). Quite the experience after a rather uneventful climb to Pawnee Pass around noon...
8/12/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 71; Tmin: 45. Will climb Mt Audobon today - looking warm and dry.
8/13/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 76; Tmin: 52(!). Climbed Mt. Audobon on a sunny morning, with abysmal visibility to the east (found out later that Boulder had 'orange' ozone alert), not as bad up high and to the west. Very stable airmass, Blue Lake parking lot was in low 70s at our return time of 2pm (took it easy with no threatening cloud in sight).
8/14/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 76; Tmin: 51. 2nd day in a row with a low in the 50s, three to go, definitely a late summer heat wave.

8/17/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 81; Tmin: 53 (right around midnight). Hottest day of the month so far, breezy as well (outflow from dry storm?), with G40 at neighbor's gage.

8/21/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 74; Tmin: 47. Another dry day in a dry August...
8/22/2014 7:00 AM 0.21 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 73; Tmin: 47 (will get colder later today). Finally got lucky compared to other sites, clearly visible in radar data as well (storms hit after 3pm).
8/23/2014 7:00 AM 0.32 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 60; Tmin: 41 (40 later this evening). Multiple storms, all after about 2pm MDT, fog in the area in late evening, as skies above are clearing. While I have seen moose in the region before, this was the first time I saw one munching away by the road side, just before 10pm MDT and a mile from my house… Rainfall of last two days (0.53") has more than doubled monthly total, which is still only about half the long-term average.
8/24/2014 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 64; Tmin: 39 (low for the month). Thunderstorm rolled thru around 1pm, but was just getting its act together for Boulder, so not much to show for it up here. Breezy and chilly after that - low 50s by 4pm MDT seems quite fall-like for a sunny afternoon...
8/25/2014 7:00 AM 0.04 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 70; Tmin: 42. This rain fell around midnight.

8/31/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 72; Tmin: 45 (lower later this evening). 1st day in 10 or so without precip, as best as I can tell (came up on the 30th).
9/1/2014 7:00 AM 0.22 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 66; Tmin: 37 (tied daily record). Most of this fell in frozen form, including 0.5" hail around 3pm MDT (painful on scalp when I ran out to remove funnel from gage, which effectively ended that hail episode after only 0.03" had fallen). Multiple thunderstorms and showers from 3pm all the way to about 9:30pm MDT. August precipitation total of 1.76" is on the low side for this site, but much better than the 0.46" that had fallen through the 20th of the month.

9/8/2014 7:00 AM 0.07 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 70; Tmin: 45. 0.01" fell after midnight, rest in early afternoon, according to neighbor's wunderground gage (which also recorded a gust of 30mph yesterday).
9/9/2014 7:00 AM 0.03 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 66; Tmin: 49. This rain fell in afternoon.
9/10/2014 7:00 AM 0.19 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 63; Tmin: 40. Early afternoon shower (~0.06"), followed by overnight rain, mostly between 1am and 4:30am MDT (based on neighboring recording gage).
9/11/2014 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 61; Tmin: 38. A dry day, waiting for an impressive little cold shot that produced the earliest snow on record for Rapid City (since 1888), and up to 8" of snow in Sheridan.
9/12/2014 7:00 AM 0.23 0.8 M 0.5 M Tmax: 47; Tmin: 21 (coldest on record so early in season in 25 years). 0.07" of water in the gage by 7:45pm (and a trace of frozen stuff in funnel), with temperatures still slightly above freezing; drizzle turned into frozen variety shortly thereafter, and to snow around 11pm. By 1am MDT, I measured 0.7" of snow and another 0.12" of liquid (0.03" were from that earlier liquid drizzle). Precip appears to have turned back to freezing drizzle after this time, because the final 0.1" of snow contained 0.04" of liquid. One of my earlier snowfalls on record, but a foot of snow on the 7th of September 2001 remains a much more impressive event (albeit followed by an underwhelming winter that turned into the 2002 drought year). Overcast and winterish looking this morning, with only a few aspen that have turned color so far. Worried that the hard freeze will deprive of our full color display later this month.
9/13/2014 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 38 (tied for coldest so early in season); Tmin: 23 yesterday morning/27 last evening/31 since midnight. A little freezing drizzle fell by noon, fog lifted by 2pm MDT. Fall is definitely here. Leaves that had turned color are now going straight to brownish-black. Luckily that was <10%.
