Another morning with fairly heavy frost. Many deciduous leaves in this general area have been nipped by the last two frosty nights so the fall colors are now more muted than they were and the hardest hit leaves are now a chocolate brown color. Fall colors are still pretty, just not as brilliant as some years. |

In grassy areas snow depth is about 2.0" but in areas that have less vegetation that melted yesterday it is about 1.0". Interesting rainbow to the SE at 7 AM. Only the two ends were visible, no arch. It looked like two verticle rainbow colored columns sitting on top of storm clouds. It was gone before I could get a camera. |

Yesterday morning there was snowfall with strong wind. The wind blew fairly hard all day. I think both the rain gauge and the snowboard missed a good part of that snow. This morning there was 1.0" of new snow on the snowboard with fairly calm wind. (Snowboard was blown bare yesterday several times). I would estimate that in the past 24 hours at least 1.5" of new snow fell although precipitation measurements show less than that. I am reporting 1.5" new snowfall but feel that is very conservative. I took a snowboard core of the 1.0" amount and there was 0.06" of precipitation which matched the rain gauge nicely but as I say, both snowboard and rain gauge certainly would have missed some of the windblown snowfall. |

I watched the nearly horizontal snowfall yesterday come in at an angle that mostly missed the rain gauge so I know that the precipitation report is short of what actually fell. Total snow on the ground measurement this morning shows a 4.0" difference from the same measurement the previous day. I do not think that the snow actually settled 4.0". Possibly 2.0", but not 4.0". I'm finding that with the windy conditions this winter and the drifted snow on the ground that if I alter the place I measure even a couple of feet from where I usually measure it can make a difference in the total. I try to find areas that are not obviously drifted and be consistent and measure in the same general places every day but it is easy to have some variations because just about everywhere is drifted at least a little. I based the SWE measurement on 20.5" which is the average depth of snow I measured today from 10 different measurements. |

Warm temperatures during the day yesterday (36 degrees) followed by cooler temps with snow and wind, including a short period of white-out conditions, made today's measurements tricky. I am reporting exactly what I found on the snowboard and in the rain gauge but feel that these measurements are short of the amount of snow we actually got here. |

The SWE core this morning had about a half inch of solid ice in the bottom as well as some slush and water. Used a chisel and tried to get as much of the ice as I could. Trace of precipitation was almost a tenth of an inch of small diameter graupel. It was about 35 degrees and very windy when it was falling last evening. I can see some large areas of snow free dirt on the hilltops and ridges now. We've had several days of warm temperatures and melting. Measured an average depth of 9.0" snow in my yard this morning. SWE of 9.0" was 3.41". In the overall area however some of the hills are snow free. About 3 inches below the surface was a layer of ice about 1/2 inch thick and next to the ground there was another layer of ice about 1 inch thick.

All of the precipitation in this report came from a 35 minute rain/hail storm yesterday afternoon that began at 4:37 PM. Nearly all of the precipitation was hail (see hail and significant weather reports). Fortunately, I had only the outer cylinder of the rain gauge up. The hail would have plugged the funnel and I would have missed the total measurement. We almost never get so much water in so short of a time period. There was ankle deep water in the back yard, water on the garage floor and our seasonal stream (dry since spring) was running. There is still some hail on the ground this morning in shady areas. Average depth of hail on the ground was 1.0" but the rain gauge had about 4 inches of hail in it after the storm. |

I woke to the sound of rain pelting hard against the window pane at about 11:50 PM. By midnight the shower had ended. There were some heavy clouds and a little fog at 6AM but by 7AM the sky was clear. |

It's a rare day indeed that I can report over an inch of rain in one observation period. Rain began at about 2:10 PM and other than a few short breaks continued steadily falling until 8PM or even later.
Snow is visible on the ground to our northwest on Black Mountain. I estimate that the snow line begins at about 8600 feet, but the ground at this station is just wet. |
