Most of this was in the form of rain. We did have a light dusting of snow over night. We are still expecting a large snow fall caused by "The Lake affect" of the winds blowing over Lake Michigan and dropping huge amounts on land fall. Our expectations were from 6" to a foot. Now in our area it has been lowered to 3" or less. The temperature at the bank was 31 F. The conditions are about the same as they were for the "Snow of 67" that left over 3ft of snow on the ground in less than 12 hours. |

The Temperature was near 32F when most of the snow fell. The snow was preceded by a light rain and then turned to snow. A lot of the snow melted before accumulating. Some surfaces have a full cover of snow but most areas are quite scattered in their depth. The falling snow and rain froze almost immediately on the roads making for hazardous driving. |

The snow depth was about 19 near the gauge. We had a hard wind most of the day/night. This caused a lot of drifts and valleys in the snow cover. They say we are about -15F. More of the cold again tonight. We are under an emergency order. The National Guard has been activated to help stranded motorist. We are advised to stay off the roads except in extreme emergency conditions so they can rapidly clear roadways. |

The temperatures are above freezing today. The accumulated snow is rapidly melting. The streets in our area are quite flooded. many are impassable. Hopefully the temperatures remain above freezing because the slushy ice, snow and water is forming deep ridges that will damage cars as they try to navigate even if it turns to ice. The crawl space sump ran an inordinate numvber of times over the past 24hrs. The melting snow and water didn't move away from the house and apparently seeped back through the areas close to the foundation at an unprecedented rate. The conditions now closely parallel the "Event" of "67". No one expected the nearly 3ft of snow we received throughout the Chicago area. The snow came off the Lake to a great extent driven by a North wind. The Northern side of the collection tube had a uniform depth of snow clinging on it. The storm passed through in less than an hour between 7PM and 8PM. The winds were quite severe and I see several roof shingles from someone's house in my patio. The wind blew rain at least 12 feet across the kitchen before I could get over to shut the window.
Hail was coming down with rain and there was perhaps one stone in every square inch. They quickly melted in the rain. The day was quite warm and everything was still warm. The rain was fairly warm also. The hail fell for at least 5 minutes and appeared to be around 1/4" and larger. There are leaves stripped off the trees in great abundance covering a fair portion the walks, driveways and streets. I reset my collection tube and will report any later falls in the morning report.

We had high winds, thunder and lightening rain and hail between 7PM and 8 PM that dropped !.57". The next twelve hours we accumulated another .22" Lots of limbs and trees are down in the area. Electricity is out many sections of Porter county. The yard plants were beaten down and lots of leaves and stems are broken. Several fires were reported because of blown transformers. Besides the dead fall limbs, my yard has lots of live limbs up to an inch in diameter snapped off. One was about 12 ft long. We had local flooding. Some streets were impassable for several hours anyway. |

The rainfall was accompanied by lightening and Thunder. Our TV satellite was interrupted for a short while. I found I could watch the taped shows during the problem time. We are still behind in the rainfall. A couple of days without watering by hand and a lot of the plants show water deprivation. |

We had some thunder and lightening. The promised high winds, luckily, didn't materialize. The water is still soaking into the ground quite rapidly indicating we are still a bit deficient in total moisture at this time. |

Three distinct rains fell during the period. the first just after noon had several lightening strikes that hit something near by. It dropped .........48" of rain.
A second one around 3 or 4 PM was also accompanied by lightening and thunder. It was more distant and I couldn't distinguish any hit that sounded earthbound.
The third fall fell later and is still drizzling as I emptied the second two falls for measurement this morning. The second and third falls combined equaled .36" of rain. The roadways in the subdivision have the gutters filled to about 3/4's on both sides of the road. This indicates that the ground isn't soaking the rainwater fast enough to clear it off. |

It appeared as if the bulk of the storm passed further South. We could hear the thunder and see the lightening in that direction. The ground here is getting extremely dry. It was bone dry at least one shovel deep when I planted some Azaleas yesterday. I watered my flower beds quite thoroughly even though rain was forecast. I'll continue with the vegetables today. The .03" merely dampened the grass a little. |

Hail between 1/4 and 3/8th inches across fell at the beginning of the rain and ceased shortly after. Perhaps 1 stone per square foot. The hail was more like sheets of ice than balls. They fell just before 2:PM today. They will be included in tomorrows report also. |

most of the rain fell around 2 PM. Just as it was beginning a few hail stones, about one per square ft, in irregular straight line freezes between 1/4 and 2/8ths. They were not like little snow balls. Rather they were layered sheet frozen together. some lightening and thunder accompanied the rain. It only lasted between 30 and 40 minutes total. |

About 3:30 we had brief shower where I was volunteering. When I went home about 3 hrs later about 10 miles away it had rained there also. It was reported that the rains were scattered and spotty in our area. |

WOW .....We had two events that added up to 5.73". The first one came about 5 PM yesterday afternoon. It gave us 1,92" of rain. The second one occurred through out the night and dropped 3.81" more.
