Not sure when it rained. Sidewalk by the downspout was a little wet. 32 degrees now - I guess winter has returned. Yesterday the middle pond was above the rocks. We needed to clear the leaves from the overflow tube. Level is normal now - it probably took most of the day to drain down. Back pond was draining normally yesterday. Even the front pond was up to its overflow. I think (and hope) the hole has sealed itself. |

So how do you measure drifted snow? You have to determine the average. The reported snow depths are really just a conservative guess. It varies from 2 foot drifts to practically nothing. Just over 8 inches on the snow board, but it is drifted snow. It's been very windy all night, appeared to be from the north although now the wind is coming from the south. Average depth of snow covered by 3/8 inch of ice is 4.5 inches. I'm never sure how to report new snow when it is mixed with ice. It started snowing hard yesterday about 5 pm. At 8 pm it was raining or sleeting and 26 degrees. This morning, all the ice is on top of the snow, none on branches or wires, fortunately. The depth of the snow in the gauge was 3 inches, covered by ice. When I added warm water to take the measurement, strange icy floccules were formed. The ice seemed very crystalline. Yesterday was a perfect day for a picnic! The fish were biting like crazy. We transferred at least 10 catfish and 50-100 little bluegill from the front to the middle pond, 7 bass from the back to the front pond. We had lots of fish, but they were in the wrong place, so this should help balance the population. |

Another work day yesterday. He dead-headed roses, pruned, mowed grass. I worked in the greenhouse, tied up tomatoes, which look especially good this year. The plants are strong, tomatoes large. We picked the first big beef on June 24. It was delicious. Several plants have ripening fruit, so no more grocery store plastic tomatoes for a few months. There are a few small cukes. Cantaloupe are pretty slow this year. The broccoli in the greenhouse are just about finished. I'm starting new plants to replace them. The garden also looks good. The corn has gotten blown around the last couple of storms, but I think it will straighten itself. The first block is starting to tassel. One of the zucchini crashed. I applied imid. and saw a few stink bugs - probably too little too late for that plant. Hopefully the other 3 plants will be OK. I haven't seen many insect pests this year, one advantage of a cold, hard winter. |

Yesterday we dug potatoes, picked beans. Also thinned bad greenhouse tomatoes caused by potassium deficiency (according to Wayne) and picked the good ones. Last week I watered the tomatoes with soluble potassium in the water. I hope it helps. Next year I will know to closely watch and treat early if the symptoms on the leaves return. |

It was a hot day yesterday! After we picked up Jazzy from the vet, Bob cut grass and I treated the moss in the middle pond. We had BLT's for supper. One of the tomatoes was a Big Beef from the garden, and it was delicious. Next year, I need to plant a couple of big beef in the garden, no other varieties. The greenhouse tomatoes have slowed considerably, which is just fine. I think the few tomatoes that set fruit around the 4th of July are starting to ripen. We had a hot spell at that time and there was little fruit set. |

47 degrees, very clear sky. Took out tomatoes in garden - they were pretty poor this year. Also zinnias in front of big greenhouse. Still picking cukes and small tomatoes in the greenhouse. Should have broccoli soon. |
