In yesterday's report, I thought the rain was finally over... but I found a trace in the gauge this morning. Anyway, that doesn't change the storm total. Despite over 3" for the storm, my total is among the lowest in the area - and it matches well the local min in a map of radar estimates for the 7-day total. Beyond that, I seem to often be in a local minimum, which is reflected in long term totals, despite a few summer thunderstorms when I am near the maximum. |

Most fell in a couple minutes at 2:27am when the low-topped squall line came through (no lightning or thunder). It looked like a hurricane for a minute, with impressive blowing water with lots of spray, as peak winds came with peak rain rate. Given the absence of large tree limbs down or other damage, I guess the rain may have been blowing more from the momentum it carried downward than from wind at tree canopy level, but it sure did look impressive for a minute or two. |

Total includes a small amount from continuation of light rain yesterday after obs time. All precip that I saw today fell as snow this morning, with melting at the beginning of the event and more melting towards the end. Short grass was even sticking up during the heaviest snow when it was mostly sticking and accumulating, appeared to be more snow that fell than that stayed - possibly some melting from underneath. Yesterday's event had melted almost completely before today's began, so I used shady sheltered corners of the yard to measure the new snowfall depth, as other areas ranged from bare to around half as much as the shady sheltered area due to melting, both from sun and from sun-warmed ground (shady areas probably had colder ground too). |

Had 4.5" as of around midnight with additional light snowshowers adding 0.2" after that. Reportedly, precip began here as sleet. At office in Gaithersburg, was all snow with an impressive afternoon fall of gigantic flat aggregates which looked like torn up sheets of paper. Average depth in yard is 3" but there was melting before it began accumulating. The unused car had a uniform coverage of 4.5" at midnight when I cleared it and additional 0.2" in the morning (sunny now). This car core sample had 0.41" of liquid and the morning addition had 0.02". Most likely, the precip stuck to the car before it stuck without melting to grass and other surfaces, so it serves as my snowboard. Hailpad had less snow, so I guess it had more melting. Winds were weak as of the midnight sample, just starting to pick up this morning, and there was no sign of drifting or the car receiving a dose from any nearby objects. Gauge outer cylinder brackets were fused, I could not remove it from its stand, so cannot use its contents for measurement, and it appears my sample from the car is a good sample. |

No change from last evening's "significant weather" report except to note that I observed this morning snow flakes flying through the air under clear skies, apparently blown off roofs or trees. All snow, ended around or before 10pm. 0.33" is average from core samples, only 0.20 in gauge. Snow is light and fluffy and was a little windy so gauge had undercatch although area around it had a good amount and I used an adjacent spot for one of the core samples. Depth 4" minimum, with 4" in some areas including under trees and some exposed spots, up to 5.5" in some areas, but does not appear to be much drifting yet. Overall best spots were consistently a bit over 5". |

Storm total snow 11", storm total precip 1.41"
Rain continued for a while after yesterday's obs, with around 3" of snow depth loss from melting. Snow resumed in earnest in the evening with moderate to heavy snow for a while, starting out as wet gloppy nearly rain-like snow. Shoveling this second batch this morning was brutal - already had cleared out first part of storm yesterday, but the 2" of depth was encased in ice and frozen onto the pavement, and it was heavy and solid like bricks.
Trees had lots of snow in them last evening when the second batch fell but wind blew it all out, trees bare now and snow on ground is pock-marked full of small holes where snow from trees fell into the snowpack, indicating that the snowpack became encrusted and hard after freezing later overnight after the wind blew snow out of the trees.

A half inch of snow fell, seems there was some freezing rain mixed in because it adhered to surfaces and was crunchy in places, not a loose powder even though the top was powdery. Driveway had 0.5" to 0.75" of ice buildup with powdery snow on top. Ice was similar to compacted refrozen snow, not as heavy and solid as glaze. Gauge catch had 0.51" additional after the 12:15am reading of 0.28", for my storm total report of 0.79". During the mid-day, we had bright skies with moderate snow, with some dendritic flakes mixed with small fine particles, didn't examine carefully to see if needles. Mid-day light rain, then cold frontal band around 7pm with impressive dark updraft base but no lightning and only a few minutes of rain, sporadic moderate rain for a few seconds or a minute at a time, few bursts. Strong winds were immediately behind the band, continuing through the night, but not much wind reaching the ground during the rain and not much of a gust front at the surface. However, saw scud moving rapidly from southwest under the updraft base and rapidly from northwest to the rear of the updraft base. |

Snow began around 6pm and after 2 hours of mostly moderate steady snow with intermittent breaks to barely light snow, ground was still bare from having been warm. After that, snow started accumulating, but upward sloping south-facing driveways were still bare even a couple hours later. I had 7" on the car that was not used and not in a sunny location and was among the first items the snow was sticking to, so that's a good estimate of total snowfall and I used a core sample from it (and 2 yard spots). The snow in the yard was mostly around 5 1/2 inches with a few spots closer to 6 1/2. Snow on pavement was even less due to more melting early in the storm. More light snow is continuing but appears not to be adding up to much, so this looks like it will be almost a complete storm total. |

Forgot to check gauge before leaving in the morning. Snow was melting while falling yesterday - came home yesterday evening to find bare patches and less than an inch on the ground. Estimating this morning around 0.5". Now ground is mostly bare but still snow in places. In contrast, at my office in Gaithersburg, we got around 3 or 4 inches of accumulation although roads were only wet and even today at the end of the day there was still a lot of snow-covered ground although there were bare areas too.
Had removed funnel and inner cylinder, so did not lose any of the snow sample but could have lost a little to evaporation - reading should be almost as good as any other day. |

Great lightning show to the distant south during the night! During the evening around 8pm, some sort of outflow boundary with not quite a shelf cloud but some updraft bases with only modest towers on them passed through, though not much wind or anything with it. Best lightning show in years! First storms to the north and northeast around 10-11pm, then to the northwest and northeast, then also southwest, then south. New storms kept forming to the northwest and moving east. Eventually we got a few big drops of rain as a new cell formed just south and another skirted just north around 1am. Towers were lit up, individual bolts visible from high in the towers to ground with forking and portions of the bolts weaving in and out of the cloud, and lightning was extremely frequent in all of the cells with several in different directions blazing away simultaneously. |

Afternoon storm before arrived home from work, no rain after that. No branches down, wind must not have been strong despite NWS warning. Radar indicates bulk of the storm and associated winds passed to the south and another cell formed or matured further east. At office in Gaithersburg, watched an interesting vigorous small cell to the southwest, passed just south, with well-defined updraft base, inflow tails, developing roll cloud, and south of the dark updraft base were scud moving rapidly from the west while winds were calm to light southeasterly at my location ahead of the storm, gusty westerly in rain shaft behind it as it passed by. Arcs of lightning were jumping out of the updraft area, more resembled storms I have seen on the plains than typical of around here. But this display didn't last long as the structure became less sharply defined and lightning less frequent as the storm passed by. |

Early afternoon heavy storm at home while was at the office, then more rain in evening. Mature tree down a few blocks northwest of house and was told storm had lots of lightning.
Encountered tremendous deluge, no lightning, on evening commute from south end of I-270 continuing southeast along 270 spur but suddenly drove out of it before merging onto beltway. Impressive looking thunderstorm approached from west at 6:30pm with multistroke intense lightning to the west veiled behind rain (west, rain not arrived here yet), and thunder rumbling from thick anvil overhead (view blocked by streamers of tower cu moving rapidly from the south), deep purple to almost turquoise watery cloud base to the west. Then a thin ragged roll cloud passed over and the color changed to gray, with a striated shelf cloud behind it. Heavy downpour came in waves for around 10 minutes, with strongest surges of wind during the heaviest bursts of rain, probably around 35-40 MPH with some brief higher gusts. By this time, lightning had decreases as storm produced a lot less lightning as it got closer. Steady rain a while later as remains from other storms passed over, and another briefly heavy cell passed over a few hours later with a little bit of lightning. |

Shower around 4:15pm. Flat cumulus, looked capped, during mid-day, then suddenly very tall cu and CBs in late afternoon with deep rumbles of thunder to south and east and really sharp pretty CB to the south-southeast around 4:45pm with stark sharp towering cu lined up to the east while perfectly clear to the west. Visibility was uncharacteristically high for such a hot humid day. |

At office in Gaithersburg, had big storm at 4pm with roll cloud, nasty looking updraft base, rain foot to the southwest, and blowing sheets of rain. Storm had 70 VIL on approach, decreased down to around 30-40, then back over 60 a little bit after it passed by. At home had several thunderstorms with a lot of lightning behind the storm. All the storms including afternoon at the office had lightning concentrated to the rear immediately behind where the flanking line feeds into the main tower. |

Heavy thunderstorm with strong winds - likely undercatch due to winds whipping the rain. First drops fell at 7:14pm, most of the rain fell in around a 20-minute period. Very frequent in-cloud lightning throughout the storm, lots of thunder emanating from the thick anvil before the storm arrived, and dark vigorous updraft bases with hard towers above the gust front ahead of the mature storm. Strongest winds were during the heaviest rain bursts well behind gust front. |
