Wow! What a storm! Winds started by 11:15 a.m. Most of the leaves on the deciduous trees blew off during the initial winds. By 1:15 p.m. hard winds picked up--evergreens were really swaying. At 2:30 p.m. the winds picked up more. The air was filled with larch needles--golden snow! Larch needle drifts were everywhere. Branches (3/4 to 1" that I noticed close to the house) were breaking off. At 5:20 p.m. we noticed one of our lodgepole trees tipped over. It is hung up in a fir. We are hoping it will hold until afterwork today so we can hook a cable to it and pull it down before it falls on the power lines. It was too windy to even try yesterday evening. Hopefully the winds will die down by tonight. At 7 p.m. the winds picked up even more. They seemed to increase throughout the evening. Around 10 pm. there was a gust that shook the whole house. I am always suprised that more trees don't come down when the wind is like this. I'll be able to tell more about tree debri, etc. when it is finally daylight. Winds are still very strong--I may have to postpone my morning walk today. It is mostly clear and 30F & scarey to be outside. |

New snow accumulation does not include about 2" that fell yesterday mostly in the morning. I didn't get out to measure before most of it melted. Snow fall was very heavy throughout the morning and midday. This was a heavy wet snow. When this snow lightened up the winds picked up and were very strong at times. We had a few more episodes of snow fall--all melting by evening. Not snowing or blowing at 9:30 p.m. This morning when I measured the snow was light and fluffy. It appears that there isn't much more than 1/4" left from yesterday's total. |

Suprised and very happy to see it snowing yesterday. Forecast was for snow to come Sunday night. Started snowing here about 3:30 p.m., by 5:30 p.m. we had 3/4". Snow ended by 8 p.m. At 9 p.m. we had 7/8" and no more overnight. Snow is very cold and slick! What we called "Cold Smoke" when I was a kid skiing at Bridger Bowl! Snow measure is an estimate--I think there may have been more. Snow melted as it was falling and throughout the day. My measure place was melted off at 9:15 p.m. Snow started between 9 & 9:05 a.m., between about 10 & 11 a.m. it was very heavy with low visability. This first snow ended about 1:30 p.m. At about 2:25 p.m. snow started again and was on & off throughout the rest of the afternoon and into the evening. I was in town (about 2 miles to the south) during the worst of the snow, there was about 2" when I left--I should have measured before I left! When I returned the snow was already melted quite a bit--even though it continued to snow. For as warm as it was I was suprised we never did get rain. Wind started picking up in the afternoon--I was glad the snow was much lighter by this time or we would have had blizzard conditions. |

Gauge snow depth measured 6.0", measuring spot measured 5.0". Not sure which one to record for new snow total. It snowed all day but didn't add up to too much until after 4 p.m. At 5 p.m. we and 1/2", at 7:30 p.m. we had 2 1/4", at 9 :30 we had 3 1/2". Overnight we had another 1 1/2". There was some wind yeterday but not bad and no real drifting from it. This morning there is still a very light snow falling.

It poured rain all day--was heaviest throughout morning and early afternoon. Then is was a steady rain until about 8 p.m. when it turned to light rain. Rained on and off yesterday morning. We had 0.04" just after a rain & hail storm that started at 12:55 p.m. Hail lasted about 4 minutes. See hail reports. Then it was mostly dry for the afternoon. Rain started again just before 5 p.m. Thunder started rolling about when the rain started. Rain increased until 5:17 p.m. when hail started. 5:19 p.m. hail started. 5:19 p.m. a deluge of rain and more hail. 5:22 p.m. rain & hail abruptly stopped, although there was a light sprinkle. Then there was another hard wave of rain--you could see it coming--this lasted for about 10 seconds, then it abruptly stopped again (still a light shower.) 5:24 p.m. there was more really hard rain and hail mixed in, this time there was high wind along with it. 5:30 p.m. the hard rain & hail stopped and was a light sprinkle and then stopped shortly after. I measured 0.32" at this time. It was amazing to watch this storm. Very loud and very powerful! The puddles grew large within minutes and started flowing into our spring pond. The pond looked like it was at a full rolling boil the rain was hitting so hard. I expected trees to blow down in the wind--so far I haven't seen any that did. Thunder rolled a few times throughout the storm. Early in the storm there was a lightning flash. See hail reports. |

Lightning started at 6:50 p.m. Some strikes were very close and very loud. Thunder started at same time as lightning. Rain started about 5 minutes after thunder and lightning. This storm lasted 20-30 minutes. There was 0.05" of precip. Thunder woke me up at 4:40 a.m. followed a few minutes later by lightning--some strikes very close again. Rain started after thunder and lightning. All ended at 5:17 a.m.--although rain could have tapered to a light sprinkle. I think the first lightning in the evening and two others hit something within a mile radius of us. One early this morning sounded like it may have hit something too. |

What an impressive lightning storm last night! Thunder started about 11:45 p.m., rain and lightning shortly after. Lighting was intense. Very high winds blew during the storm--worse at mid storm. Currently raining and windy. I was in Whitefish, MT, (about 10 miles west) when the thunder storm hit. Thunder started first, followed by torrential rain and hail--1/4"+ size. There were leaves and small branches knocked off the trees & flooding in the streets. Water was flowing along the sides of the streets clear past the parked cars and about to the top of the curb. Driving was difficult--rain was coming down so hard. I learned the power was out at home for at least two hours--trees down across power lines. I do not know if we had the hail here. |
