In Lewisburg...29F. humidity: 54%. wind: calm. visibility: 10 miles. dew-point: 14F. wind chill: 10 F. My 2 y/o grandson, my daughter, her boyfriend and his mom had a basement fire. Took 15 minutes to put the fire out. happened 3:30 am. they had a smoke alarm and it woke them up in time to get everyone out. They had to be treated for smoke inhalation but are okay.apartment however is unlivable. The cause...never ever use an extension cord with a space heater...the extension cord over-heated and caught fire. The American Red Cross has put them up in an apartment for 2 weeks to give them time to find another place to live.Smoke alarms save lives! check its batteries and make sure it works. Also give to the ARC...known for blood donations, they also respond to people who have had house fires every nine seconds in the U.S. |

Today it was cloudy, just a dreary day. The highs reached to 41F. Conditions in South Central WV...32 DP, RH 69, Wind from the East @ 5 mph. Barometric pressure 29.97. courtesy of NWS. Now for our areas WVVA Forecast...Storms ( rain/t-storms) roll in before dawn Friday...Strong winds over-night, and Friday too. Wind is the main concern! A strong area of low pressure is moving through the Great Lakes region and will bring a cold front through our area by Friday morning before sunrise. Ahead of this cold front, winds out of the South will stay steady at 15 to 25 mph with gusts reaching 30-50 mph after midnight. The strongest winds will come with the front itself, especially if any thunderstorms hold together. A few storms may be severe with wind gusts up to 58 mph or higher, but widespread wind of this strength is not likely. Due to a very soggy ground, this may lead to spotty power outages. Also, a period rain will move East through the early morning and bring most a quarter to three quarters of an inch in about 2 hours. This may lead to minor flooding, especially around swollen creeks and streams. Wet weather will end well before noon and skies begin to clear Friday. Temps will drop into the low 40's in the morning, then return to near 50 in the afternoon. Winds stay gusty from the West through the afternoon. Wind advisories have been posted for many from late tonight Friday afternoon. The weekend looks dry and quiet with sun and high 50's Saturday and low to mid 50's Sunday with more clouds. Turning colder next week with highs in the 40's Monday and 30's by Tuesday to Thursday. There are no organized storms at this point, but there is a slight chance for snow showers Tuesday to Thursday. |

As of 8 pm...no NWS advisories, watches, or warnings. Today in Rainelle WV/Greenbrier county...sunny, mild wind, clear blue sky. Temp 42F, clear tonight with a low of 27F. A 2% chance of rain for our area. Now for Janna Browns WVVA Futurecast for Greenbrier County...Colder tonight then a nice weekend on the way! High pressure takes over going into the start of the weekend and allowing for a colder night followed by more sunshine, Saturday. Winds lighten up overnight, but a breeze will linger, keeping many temps in the upper 20's to low 30's. Some of the deeper, sheltered valleys may get into the mid 20's. Patchy black ice is possible from earlier rains and snow melt. Saturday looks like a beautiful day with sunshine and high temps reaching the 50's to near 60's. An approaching cold front will push more clouds in Sunday and some wet weather Sunday night, but overall we are still looking at a nice day. A southwesterly flow will keep Sunday on the mild side with highs back into the 50's for most. Patchy high clouds linger ahead of a weak cold front that moves through Sunday night with scattered rain and snow showers.Precipitation is looking light and should end very early Monday, but it will be cooler with highs in the lower 40's. Colder air slides southward during the week with lows returning to the teens and 20's and highs down to the 20's by Wednesday. A storm system may bring light snow to the area Wednesday as well, then drier but cold to end the week. |

28F, partly sunny with a mild wind. No new precip overnight. WVVA futurecast for our area...partly sunny today. Cooler east, warmer west. Sleet/fz rain possible tomorrow am. The quiet weather continues today as we'll see partly sunny skies. There will be a wide range of temperatures this afternoon- locations east of I-77, especially the Greenbrier valley, will be in the 30's while it will be warmer west. Some locations in McDowell and Wyoming counties may come close to 50 degrees. We stay cloudy tonight as temperatures fall back to either side of 30. Tomorrow's forecast is tricky because we will be on the western fringes of possible precip. This precip, if it falls, will likely be sleet or freezing rain. Best chances of precip are east of I-77, but again this is not a sure bet forecast. Models are still in disagreement over the exact precip field, so stay tuned for updates throughout the day today. Quiet weather returns for a warmer weekend with highs in the 50's. By the start of the work week, temperatures could be close to 60, but we're keeping an eye on a potential storm system that could be bring precip. and cooler air back to the area by middle or end of next week. No NWS advisories, watches, warnings, or even a hazardous weather outlook issued today. Now our official NWS forecast for Rainelle, WV/Greenbrier county...today-partly sunny. Hi: 36F. In Rainelle, WV. @ 8 PM...cloudy @ 32F- but feels much colder! Winds and moderate. No precip overnight or during the day. Different story tonight. A Winter weather advisory is in effect for our area from 25 March 4 am to march 26 @ 8 am EST. tonight... 60% chance of snow mainly after 5 am. cloudy. Lo: 24F. L&V winds. 1/2 inch of snow expected. Now the WVVA in depth weather forecast for the remainder of our week...with cold air in place and an approaching upper level disturbance and cold front, snow is looking likely going into Tuesday. Clouds increase tonight and snow showers become possible after midnight, but look more likely after 4 am. By the morning commute, many will have just a dusting to 1/2 inch on the ground. Scattered snow showers may mix with rain in the afternoon as temps come above freezing, allowing for some melting. The trickiest travel time may occur later in the day around dinner time as a cold front moves through. Heavier bands of snow are possible with the front, which could bring a quick 1-2 inches across the region depending on our temperature at that time (hill tops that are colder may get 3-4 inches-mainly Greenbrier/Summers counties). Snow showers taper off Tuesday night. High pressure builds in Wednesday allowing for more sunshine, however temperatures stay cold with highs in the 30's. Gusty winds continue through the first half of the day from the massive coastal storm, but as that moves away and high pressure builds in, winds will gradually lighten. Thursday looks dry and warmer, but with increasing clouds. Another cold front pushes through Friday with periods of rain. We dry out for the weekend and gradually warm up! |

For the remainder of this week- the NWS, in Blacksburg, Va. has issued a hazardous weather outlook for our area..."isolated strong to severe t-storms with localized flash flooding this evening-especially from the southern blue ridge into the Piedmont this afternoon and tonight. For Wednesday through Monday...a threat of strong/severe t-storms and flash flooding exists especially with the greatest chances for them to happen Thursday into Saturday". WVVA weather forecast update: "a strong ridge of high pressure continues to bring mainly dry and hot conditions to our area. tonight will be another mild night with low temps ranging in the 60's with a few near 70. Valley fog is possible; otherwise, skies remain clear to partly cloudy with muggy conditions. Wednesday may be the hottest day in this stretch with highs climbing into the upper 80's to mid 90's late in the day. With high pressure firmly in control, we will likely stay rain free again, but a stray shower or t-storm is still a possibility- especially in the eastern mountains. High pressure begins to break down Thursday and an upper low moves from Canada to northern New England, which will send a few upper level waves through our area for the end of the week and weekend. At the surface, an approaching frontal boundary will be moving southward toward our area, increasing our chances for showers and t-storms. Temperatures remain hot and humid Thursday and Friday with a chance for t-storms in the afternoon and evening. Several waves will ride along the front through the weekend- not making it a washout, but bringing periods of showers and storms. The front looks to come through the area sometime early next week". |

Highs will hit the low 80's and lows reach the low 60's. The Thursday through Monday time period is a little tough to forecast in term of rainfall. The computer models have been having a hard time painting a clear picture. Just yesterday it looked like the occasional afternoon popup shower/storm would be possible during this time frame, but now that is looking less likely. We need the rain, but at least the lesser of two evils is that we could experience pleasant weather through next Monday with highs in the upper 70's and lows in the upper 50's. |

Wed. night: partly cloudy. lo: 50f. calm wind. Now our WVVA forecast by Senior Meteorologist, Janna Brown...Cooler with lingering clouds in the mountains...Breaks in the clouds are possible through tonight as moisture exits to the South and drier air moves in from the West with high pressure. However, winds will shift to the NE overnight and allow for fog and patchy drizzle to return across the higher elevations. Wedging of cool air will keep highs in the lower to mid 60's East of I77 Wednesday to low 70's West. Skies turn mostly sunny to partly cloudy West, but clouds linger East- possibly through the afternoon. High pressure continues to build in the two Virginia's Thursday and Friday, bringing more clear sky to all. Overnight lows likely dip into the 40's for many and daytime highs remain in the low 70's West of I-77 to mid upper 60's East. By the weekend, temperatures will warm up as our wind flow shifts back from the SW and highs should get into the 70's for everyone. An approaching cold front will bring back the chance for rain Sunday night into Monday morning and another deep trough will bring back cooler weather for the start of Fall. |
