Temperatures got barely above freezing all day, coldest day-time Tmax of the season so far. Still leftover patches of snow in the shade. With 0.2" of snow yesterday all there was this month, it will be a new record-low snowfall total for October. This is particularly unusual considering that El Niño is afoot, albeit on life-support.

Snow began in late morning and continued past midnight, although that last stretch was only 0.1". Interesting period from about 6pm onwards, past the predicted end of snowfall when a persistent band of snow stretched south of Peaceful Valley east-southeastward to about Jamestown (based on driving thru it around 8pm, and based on radar) for several hours and dropped about 1/4" per hour until about midnight. A lot of settling overnight to keep depth at 3" even with 1.2" total since evening measurement around 8pm. A few flurries and overcast this morning, with temperatures hovering just above 0F.
11/12/2014 7:30 AM 0.20 3.9 M 5.0 M Tmax: 04; Tmin: -12. Brr, this is colder than anything I have ever measured up here in November! Temperature did not break 5F yesterday, and is hovering below -10F this morning. Flurries all day, but only amounting to 1.3/0.08" by midnight when we were down to the high single numbers below 0F. A snow band set up overhead sometime after 1am to give us fluffier snow (2.6/0.12") since then, despite staying really cold. Still snowing this morning, under overcast skies. May not get above 0F today, also a new record for this calendar month (since 1990).
11/13/2014 7:00 AM 0.10 1.4 M 4.5 M Tmax: -5(!); Tmin: -18. Coldest day on record for November yesterday, with a subzero high and a low of -18F overnight. Set new monthly record lows twice for Tmin (old record was -11F in early November 1991), and once for Tmax (my earliest subzero high on record was back on December 7th, 2005). My observations began in 1990. Snow continued lightly all day, ending around 7pm (only a few flurries after that, under generally clear skies). Cold air vacated this morning (only -6F by 7am), without any noticeable wind. Snow"pack" is still settling, perhaps even melting from below, with only 4.5" to show for just about 10" of snow that have fallen in last three days. By comparison, my banister was still carrying 7" this morning, so half of the drop most be due to melting from below, kind of unusual for so late in fall season.

Very small snow pellets commenced before 11am, surprisingly early, but snowfall rates remained slow thru afternoon (2.0"/0.17" thru 4:45pm), then a few hours of moderate snow (1"+/h), totaling 3.3"/0.17" by 7:30pm, tapering off to a very fluffy (30:1) 2.1" by midnight, and another 0.9"/0.05" since then. Still snowing lightly and just above 0F this morning - winter has definitely made a comeback, also yielding deepest snowpack of the season so far. 12/27/2014 7:00 AM 0.04 0.7 M 10.5 M Tmax: 9; Tmin: -5F right around midnight. Cold and calm day with occasional snow showers (much more productive in Boulder where I was), this is reconstructed from neighbor's measurements. 12/29/2014 7:00 AM 0.02 0.3 M 9.5 M Tmax: 18; Tmin: 3. Cold front came in this morning, as best as I can tell the snowfall started just before observation time. Weather service too optimistic about this one, including too generous snow:liquid ratios considering that we will be dropping into the -20sC at 700mb today.
12/30/2014 7:00 AM 0.21 1.7 M 10.5 M Tmax: 5 (in AM)/calendar daily Tmax: 10 before sunrise yesterday; Tmin: -17. Arctic 'fizzle' snow accompanied this into the night, denser than 10:1. 700mb temperature was -24C in Denver this morning. All in all very similar to that cold snap in November, but this one should be shorter-lived, although it would be surprising if it got above 0F today.

Main snow was over by mid-evening, but light arctic snow continued past midnight, under clearing skies, with subzero temperatures. Snowpack is odd mix of fluffy half-foot or so from last storm, and old drifted, crusty underneath the new snow, but sometimes too weak to carry my weight snow that was up to 1.5' or deeper. Odd mix, but skiing felt good with deep blue skies, no wind, and 10sF still before 11am. Snowpack still settling.

Snow overnight, 0.8/0.04" by midnight, looks like the subsequent snow was a lot denser (just melted it and fixed the liquid amount that had been guestimated before). Clear, calm, and cold this morning. Looks like the usual snow gradient got reversed last night...

2/4/2015 7:00 AM 0.22 4.5 M 12.0 M Tmax: 39; Tmin: 17 (still dropping). Heavy snow this morning (>2"/h), had only a trace and wind by midnight, guestimating that the serious snow started less than 2h ago (based on 1" measurement at 5:45am by a neighbor). Winds gusted to 42mph late last evening.
2/5/2015 7:00 AM 0.43 12.1 M 18.0 M Tmax: 32; Tmin: 12 yesterday morning around 9am/27 at midnight. Heavy snowfall rates continued thru 11am (9.8" out of 0.28" H2O), so one could say it was "heavy light snow"… The next 10 hours or so it never quite stopped, yielding another 2.3/0.15" (no more fluff). Calendar-daily storm total of 16.6" is my 2nd highest on record for a February day (35.7" fell in early February 2012). Perhaps of interest is that my 3rd highest daily total in (late) February occurred in 2013 (15.2"), so there is a bit of a trend going on. By late evening, temperatures were rising again out of the teens into the high 20s, along with occasional gusty winds, as the cold air was flushed out. Peak snow depth yesterday hovered around 20" in PM, but settled overnight by 2". Milky sunshine this morning, winds have calmed down, at least for the time being. Winds gusted to 32mph, and I went skiing (easier to break a trail than expected (it was fluffy), but also still subpar snowpack (heterogenous)).

This was followed by prolonged light snow with denser flakes: 2.4/0.18" by midnight, and another 3.8/0.28" by 7:30am. Temperature steady or dropping all day, hitting 13F this morning. It is still snowing 1/4"-1/2" per hour - expect to see a few more inches today… Net increase in snow depth of 10" since yesterday morning.

Became heavier (still fluffy) shortly thereafter (>1"/h), with a total of 5.4/0.20" by 7:30pm. Snow became denser as colder air worked its way into this area (0F by midnight, -5F this morning), but never stopped: 0.7/0.07" by midnight and another 1.5/0.10" overnight. Having denser snow come later compacted the snowpack more than usual. Adjusted snowfall totals upwards after getting final measurements from neighbor (thru early afternoon).

3/1/2015 7:00 AM 0.16 3.0 M 25.5 M Tmax: 20/Tmin: 03 yestermorning/07 since midnight. Snow in PM, measured 0.05/0.5" by midnight after a few hours of light snow, overnight this picked up and became fluffy (0.11/2.5"), as temperatures rose from 7F at midnight to 11F at 7am. Looks like it just ended. Hazy skies, no wind. Expect a bit more tonight, and then Tuesday into Wednesday with the last influx of arctic air. February ended up with 3.57/62.5", both records for the month, in fact, the snowfall total is my highest ever for any winter (DJF) month ((midnight readings). Only March and April have seen substantially higher snowfall totals, while October 1997 barely beat this month with 62.9".
3/2/2015 7:00 AM 0.04 0.7 M 24.5 M Tmax: 21; Tmin: 11 yestermorning as well as since midnight. A few flurries during the day, with accumulating snow in the evening. Clear and calm this morning, with the warmest temperature in several days at 7am (21F).

4/3/2015 7:00 AM 0.69 8.8 M 10.5 M Tmax: 29/Tmin: 16 before midnight/14 since then. Respectable moisture, a quick 0.2/0.02" in mid-morning, but then almost continuous snow from 3pm onwards thru the night, surprisingly dense into the evening (0.46/5.3" by midnight MST), but then turning fluffier (0.23/3.5" by this morning's observation when it was still flurrying). Never broke freezing. Snow depth jumped up since coverage came up from a trace (30%) to full coverage.

4/14/2015 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax; 52/Tmin: 32. This warm spell is different - still freezing at night; a lot of uncertainty surrounding the incoming storm, could be historic (some SREF members clock in above 5"), or a dud (under 0.5"). But it will be mostly snow up here...
4/15/2015 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 59/Tmin: 30. The warmth before the storm, hitting 59F yesterday; still huge uncertainty regarding outcome over next few days, but we will get a Four Corners low, and a decent shot at a dump. Will be home for much of this.
4/16/2015 8:20 AM 0.16 1.2 M 1.5 M Tmax: 41/Tmin: 24 before and after midnight. Got home last evening, after thunderstorm deposited soft hail and some rain in my gage (0.03"/T for that (by 9pm MDT)). As best as I can tell light snow started falling around 5am this morning, steady light to moderate by 8am (only to intensity right after that). Down to 24F right now, the rain/snow line will stay below us for this one. If we end up over 20", this would be a once every other April storm, if we get more than 3', a once-per-decade April event. Here is hoping for the latter, although it may trap me up here… Snow depth rounded up to 1.5" due to leftover ' stranded flounders' from the winter (as opposed to the more customary 'beached whales' for this time of year).
4/17/2015 7:00 AM 2.40 19.1 M 17.5 M Tmax: 29/Tmin: 23 yestermorning/25 since midnight. After the morning snow (4.5/0.41" by noon MDT, but really mostly before 10am), the snow became quite light but never really quit (1.7/0.21 by 6pm). This was followed by decent snow thru 1am MDT (8.8/0.91"). Unfortunately, precipitation turned to a nasty mix of snow pellets/sleet, and even freezing drizzle at time after that so that about the same amount of moisture by observing time (0.87") only 'produced' 4.1" of "snow". Storm total now: 2.56/20.3", not quite in the Top 10 for April snows yet, but for moisture. Temperatures hovering in high 20sF overnight, never broke freezing yesterday.
4/18/2015 7:00 AM 0.65 2.7 M 16.0 M Tmax: 36 with some afternoon sunshine/Tmin: 20. Continued sleet/snow pellet showers in the morning, with freezing drizzle in between (and fog), totaling 2.0/0.62" by noon (tail end of this transitioned back to snow). Temperatures hovered just below freezing (30F-) thru this period. Sun came out afterwards to start the long melt out… The remaining snow fell overnight (neighbor's measurement), most likely after midnight. Snow depth estimated.
4/19/2015 7:00 AM 0.40 4.5 M 16.5 M Tmax: 37/Tmin: 20 last evening/24 since midnight. Cutoff low is finally moving out of our state, but not before wrap-around moisture gives more snow: 0.5/0.06" by noon, then a break (even some sunshine) and slightly above freezing again to melt all this. More serious snow came back around 4pm and dropped 2.3/0.20" by about 7pm, followed by partial clearing and the lowest temperatures of the week (around 20F). Clouds and snow rolled back in around 1am MDT, dropping 1.7/0.14" by about 3 or 4am. Snow depth measured again, looks like there must be some melting from below to assist the daily melting period from the sun, thus snow depth is stagnating. Sure looks wintery. Storm totals since Wednesday (today is Sunday!): 27.5/3.61"

4/25/2015 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.0 M Tmax: 47/Tmin; 34. Another big storm coming on a similar track, but further south (drought breaker/nibbler in SE CO?!) as well as warmer, so not a big snow producer at this elevation.
4/26/2015 7:00 AM 0.49 1.8 M 6.0 M Tmax: 46; Tmin; 31/29 before/after midnight. Rain changed to snow overnight, but very sloppy, with temperatures around freezing. Measured snowfall by neighbor, used to partition liquid totals measured by mid-afternoon (0.79" by 4:30pm MDT).
4/27/2015 8:00 AM 0.41 1.6 M 6.0 M Tmax: 34; Tmin: 27 right around midnight. Disappointing totals compared to further east (drove thru moderate+ rain from Centennial to Boulder to here in mid-afternoon), light snow alternating with (freezing) drizzle, picking up again this morning.
4/28/2015 7:00 AM 0.06 0.3 M 5.0 M Tmax: 34 (again)/Tmin: 26 right around midnight. These are the totals by mid-afternoon, heavy fog most of PM after morning snow showers, then drizzle. Snow depth estimated.

5/1/2015 7:00 AM 0.07 0.0 M T M Tmax: 65 (high for the month)/Tmin: 39/32 before/after midnight. All of April had no daily temperature records (can't remember the last time that happened), while the 16th had enough moisture/snow (1.66/16.2") to set new daily records just on that date. Overnight rain (0.01" after midnight MST) - looks like a wet first ten days of May coming up. Snow coverage down to 20%. April ended up with 5.45/41.2", ranked 7th/12th highest since 1991, respectively.
5/2/2015 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M T M Tmax: 53; Tmin: 36 (record-high). Showers and thunderstorms all around us in the afternoon, drove up to the gate on Brainard Lake road (~10K) - still plenty of snow up there, probably 3' in the trees.
5/3/2015 7:00 AM 0.02 0.0 M T M Tmax: 56; Tmin: 37 (got colder later today). Afternoon showers, a little breezy and partly cloudy this morning. Leftover snow patches dwindling fast.
5/4/2015 7:00 AM 0.51 T M T M Tmax: 61; Tmin: 32. Looks like we were on the southern end of the afternoon storms (with small hail/graupel, from about 1:45-3:15pm: 0.24/T), this was followed by overnight rain (mainly from 4-5am MDT). Looks like being a few miles north would have doubled the totals. Given the CDOT footage from Ward, there is a chance that some snow mixed in overnight (during mid-30s).
5/5/2015 7:00 AM 0.24 0.0 M T M Tmax: 43; Tmin: 33. Underwhelming total, sure is foggy up here. Again, near misses on these showers, this time to the east (J-town). Main rain in the late evening, nothing after 1am MDT. Last patches of snow melting out.
5/6/2015 7:00 AM 0.16 0.0 M T M Tmax: 42; Tmin: 35 (right around midnight). There may have been a trace of snow earlier this morning, based on CDOT footage near Ward, but none of my trusty neighborhood observers reported any. This is the last day I am carrying a trace of snow on the ground for now.
5/7/2015 7:00 AM 0.04 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 53; Tmin: 34 (got colder later today). Afternoon showers during a relatively mild day before our next real storm starts to move in.
5/8/2015 7:00 AM 0.76 0.3 M T M Tmax: 46; Tmin: 29. This is from memory, may correct precip totals by tomorrow. Sloppy snow overnight, measured once at 1am MDT (0.2"), and once this morning, might have been more if I had gotten out earlier...
5/9/2015 7:00 AM 0.89 0.4 M T M Tmax: 37 (record-cold); Tmin: 29. Snow was measured just before midnight, only 0.01/T fell after midnight.
5/10/2015 7:00 AM 0.78 7.0 M 4.0 M Tmax: 37; Tmin: 19 (finally cleared up a bit). 0.35/2.9" fell yestermorning before 11am (large flakes), most intensely around 9-10am MDT, then some rare sunshine to melt a good portion of it, followed by more light snow in the evening that never got as heavy as promised by models (about 0.5"/h for a stretch). Temperatures dropped to around 20F around midnight and stayed there all night. Hazy sunshine this morning. Power was out from about 9:30-12:30am MDT.
5/11/2015 7:00 AM 0.07 0.6 M 2.0 M Tmax: 33 (record-low); Tmin: 20. Precip was found in gage by evening on the 11th, neighbor's measurements of snow differed from each other, here I am showing the average of the two. Snow depth estimated.
5/12/2015 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 43; Tmin: 26. Yesterday was the first dry calendar day since April 29th, not too shabby. Monthly totals so far: 3.48" (above average for the month) / 8.3" (about 2/3 of normal for May). Looks like the weather will return to a wetter pattern soon, perhaps not cold enough for snow though.
