Nearly all of today's precipitation was rain. We had a short rain/snow mix just after noon yesterday that melted on contact with the ground and a little more grainy snow during the night. We had just a few flakes of snow on the car and on some wood this morning but none on the ground proper--it was too wet and too warm to stick. There is snow on the ground visible from here at a slightly higher elevation than this station (for example on Parshall Divide to the SE of us). |

Large, very wet snowflakes began falling last evening after dark with most of the snow coming between 7:30 PM and 8:00 PM. Then the wind started blowing and continued all night with only a little drifting occurring because the snow was too wet to move much. From my vantage point I estimate snow covers about 60% of the ground. I measured an average depth of 6.0" of snow today however, when I took today's snow core I discovered an inch of ice at the bottom of the core so my core is actually closer to 7.0". I have consistently found this layer of ice on the ground beneath the snow for the past three weeks in my cores. If that layer of ice holds true everywhere then the average depth of snow and ice is 7.0" rather than 6.0" but I reported the 6.0" that I measured. |

Trace was a few drops of rain at about 1:14 PM. As with the previous report it was not enough to even make things slightly damp. We had two drops on our west window. We have not had a wetting rain at this station now since May 30th so things are really drying out. My wife mentioned yesterday that it's starting to look like the "d-word" (drought) in our area. |

Most of this precipitation fell during the night in a gentle, steady rain. It was a slow enough rain that the ground was really able to absorb the water rather than running off as it does in heavy rains. It was a real help for growing crops (but not so good for those who may already be trying to put up hay and have hay down on the ground). |

We had several close strikes that came from a rather benign looking sky. When and where the next strike would hit seemed to be more unpredictable than usual. |

There was a very light shower at 6:35 this morning. It left smallish drops on the sidewalk about an inch apart. If I hadn't been outside when the shower was happening I probably wouldn't have realized it was raining. The raindrops were so small that they barely made a ripple in our animal's water bucket when they hit. |
