We could see some snow this afternoon.

Readings throughout the year were recorded on an Oregon Scientific Weather Station 5 set for an altitude of 810 feet. The exterior sensor is sheltered from the sun. The reported dew point readings have been calculated using the dew point calculator at www.decatur.de.

I neglected to get a core sample before I cleared the snow board (first time I had to do it this year), but it was heavy, wet snow on the board. The gauge sample of snow was mixed with the rain from yesterday.

However, that humidity reading is close to the humidity reported at the Valparaiso Airport (82%). We did have much rain preceding the sub-zero temperatures.

We have mostly clear skies this morning and we had an overnight low of 10.8°. Yesterday, we had some mist/drizzle early followed by a little snow starting at 10 am. The snow only amounted to 0.5", but the temperature drop in the afternoon made the roads and sidewalks slippery. The difference between the gauge measurement and the snowboard core was due to the rain which fell first.

The core reading from the snowboard (0.68") is probably more accurate than the gauge (0.59") since the opening to the gauge was restricted by a 3" high collar of wet snow. Since this report is being filed around 3 pm, I can also report that moderate snow has continued to fall throughout the day producing multiple inches of new snow. Snow is expected to end sometime overnight.

Add this amount to 7.1" reported from 9 pm Saturday (01/31/15) to 8:05 am Sunday PLUS the lake effect snow that has fallen from 8:30 am to 11:30 am and we have had a total of around 18" from this snow event. The lake effect snow is winding down right now (11:30 am). The lake effect this morning featured large 1" diameter flakes. Now it looks like winter. I have entered a 'significant weather' report for this weekend's event.

Again yesterday, the warm weather melted a good deal of snow with the only snow remaining in shadow areas and as remnants of the snow piles at the end of the driveway. Today is cloudy but should reach close to 60°.

The cold front was passing through our area as I went to bed at 10:30 pm last night causing the temperature to fall from 61° to 57° in less than 5 minutes. It just kept falling overnight.

This marks the ninth day in a row that we have had measurable rain. This string of rain days started on Sunday, June 7 with a 1.96" storm and now culminates with yesterday's 1.80" rain. On the saturated ground, we are seeing substantial ponding in low areas and on farmer's fields. Farmers have lost a substantial amount of their crops due to flooding.

Rivers are at flood stage. Farm fields are ponding. My yard is saturated. I am glad that we have rain when states like California have none, but did we need to get all of their rain, too?!!

As I type this report, a line of heavy rain showers is passing overhead (orange and red on the radar screen) with sheets of rain and puddling already happening in some of the beds around the house. It will be interesting to see how much falls in the next 20, 40, or 60 minutes. Yesterday was warm and pleasant with a mix of sun and clouds.

This morning is partly cloudy and pleasant.

I seem to be the only one in the county so far this morning. It may be just dew and leftover moisture in the gauge from Sunday morning's rain.

Therefore, I reported it as precipitation.

It is slightly over 0.01", which I thought was substantial enough to be more than left over moisture.
