Did anyone see the sunset last night? From 6:30-6:45, if you were looking directly west it looked like there was a HUGE fire just past the tree line, with the scud clouds the smoke and the sun reflecting up bright yellow-gold initially as the fire. As fire became "bigger," it turned from the gentle gold to a powerful angry red. The whole western sky was on fire, burning hotter and deeper red closer to the horizon, lower temps and lighter hues higher in thru sky. The firemen arrived (twilight approached) causing the angry red at the horizon to cool as if water had been applied to the flames, pinks from horizon to te top of the sky but cool and cold blues and violets quickly worked their ways into this painting, the final wash of colors being light, almost white pinks, cold blues and violets taking over from the east across thru top of the sky and down onto the western side - the fire was finally - sadly - extinguished.
I had been in a glass-fronted, western facing DIY warehouse with main aisle east-to-west and looking through the front window the entire "fire," each step slower..slower. . .slower. . . .and slower still. I finally just stopped all pretense of shopping and just watched.

Some day there will be just enough rain everywhere, but not too much rain anywhere...wouldn't that just be nice?
(Grin) of course, you can't really do the same with snow, can you? Because for some people, any snow is too much snow! But they don't know the joys of snow and the GLORY of winter!! Two best things of winter? It KILLS THE BUGS!! And there's NO MORE POLLEN!!! (people who don't like winter just must like bugs A LOT and pollen even more) |

Total snowfall (before compression by ice) 3.6', then .15' ice, then additional .15" snow - for 3.75' snow and .15" ice. At today's measurement, 2.0" consistently measured on the ground. Water content of all precipitate .54" water
was oddly difficult to get the snow measurement today. In 12 years doing this, never had to so gently and carefully ease the stick into the snow/ice so as to not cause the ice to break and cause a huge crater in the snow. Oh well, surprises everyday |

Slick as pig snot on walks, stairs, driveways & streets!! Just a pinch of snow atop the ice; makes it almost look like that stuff in the bathtub to get traction. But there's no traction here - worse than with pig snot then, I guess - and that's saying a LOT!! |

Tough on depth measurement, but likely a moot point within 16 hours when reduced to T or zero. Some areas - estimated 10% - clear; some areas - estimated 20% - still had snow at trace, less than half-inch between grass; all piles where snow thrown from shoveling not altered; remaining pack 1 to full 2 inches, with 1/3 snow board still retaining 2" mark. Had to reduce so 1" appeared best with all areas of shoveled pack ignored.
Have a good one! |

Hoping all my friends in Boston are good today. They took me on a walk with their wifi and gopro camera on a stick. In one part of Revere, a suburb, the first floor windows of houses weren't visible - if they were sitting in their living rooms or parlors? White. Nothing but white.
And it is BLINDINGLY BRIGHT - and this was with sunglasses, just for any light. But it was so bright with all of the reflected light - and it wasn't sunny! They're going to send more pictures. |

snow all gone - just the remains of shovel piles (driveway snow just gets pushed over edge of the retaining wall - that's a pile of snow! lol), and the "never melt" snow that is in the shade of a fence, in the shade of the structures so it never melts |

The life of a weather observer is a life of nonsequitors: we see precipitation but need add our own context; we hear reports, so we contribute our facts to plug holes.
And then in the early morning, one hears unusual things on NPR: "...and called them Thunder Lizards!" just after a thunderstorm, so it made this one weather observer wonder - nonsequitor, or not?

We're all thinking about you & praying for you. Ft Collins and Colorado! Show the nation - and the world! - that fighting, ingenious Colorado spirit and strength!! No spring storm/tornado cluster/flood/lightning fires/police-eating sinkholes or 4 feet of hail are going to stop or slow YOU down!
Eyes to your skies and hands to your neighbors -- we've got the prayers and "Over-sight" managed for you. |

In 2.15" in 90 minutes (and boy am I ever glad I built my basement the way I did! Studs connected to joists NOT to floor so as water is forced up through the seem, it has room under the wall, behind the baseboard (gapped by 1/8"), and follows tile grout lines right to the other "floating" wall, and straight to the drain! Last night it was moving at a rate sufficient to show movement in every second - rate was .5"/second! |

What causes an air mass to become so moisture-laden at the surface, so as to cause dew points in the 70+ range (extreme for the lattitude)? How is that humidity maintained day after day with no surface moisture (no rain to evaporate to cause the climb; no or little evaporation is possible at that RH/dew point as the air is already saturated)? |

Last dribs and drabs of this August Fall/Winter 3-days storm. Got lucky: final merged models showed greater than 70% of the area receiving 4" for duration of storm, for a stall was predicted by US model. But storm total just under half that volume. |

Huge billows of smoke from the western fires blocked our sun Friday and gave eerie sunsets - no definition, all blue hues covered by the smoke so was just a pink ball in the sky but no pink sky - just a ball. Full stop. (I prefer volcanic ash for sunsets)
The smoke will start to deteriorate air quality by start of the week; today will be interesting to try to storm spot with this thick haze. May just cancel because can't really see clouds. |

Smoke from Western fires has arrived again, with a sickly slimy oily burnt smell - not the pleasant smell of burnt wood from fire. This is unusual, as previous plumes have carried the traditional sweet smoke smell. I guess this one smells of the evil it foretells.
With the smoke comes the equally undesirable high temps and humidity of the west/northwest for at least this entire next week of what should be great weather for our "Great Minnesota Get-together," the Minnesota State Fair. Too bad it wasn't last week when we had those 2 most perfect days of the entire year, true "Goldilocks Days:" not too cold, not too hot; not too wet, not too dry; and just right for wind and pollen (moderate and low, respectively). Perfect! I guess we have to pay foe those now...thought we'd already paid with the smoke from 2200 miles away! HAGO (have a good one), everyone! |

This could have been a particularly heavy dew fall, but I'm going to label it precip due to 3 reasons: (1) it was dripping off roof's edge sufficient to leave puddles/sidewalk puddle markings over 3 hrs later; (2) the high dew point supports the concept of instability showers as temps change (though more common during day, radar tracks shows evidence of these within 50 miles in past 3 hrs); and (3) there was a gross amount of water collected atop the garbage and recycling cans that is entirely inconsistent with dew drop because of their respective placements.
So the garbage cans seal the deal!! Lol |

Just a freak lil storm, 4 flashes of lightning and 2 rolls of thunder and that's all she wrote. Oddest thing. Instability storm at 00:29 with nary a radar echo either. ROFLMAO gonna be A LOT of confused COCORAHS readers when they see rain in their gauge and nothing in the weather report or any hint like that lol |

A drippy, drippy day converts to a rainy morning and all we've accumulated is .17"?!? Guess we can blame the fact of rising pressure during the storm - it never wrapped up and got going. |

Gorgeous night for the eclipse; clouded up within 75 minutes of completion, so got lucky with that. No rain and nothing on radar. Radar shows and quickly loses area of fog (shows on only some scans but nothing at all on HD/TDWR scan) |

Not a drop. Bunnies are not yet showing any winter coats where last year by 15 October they appeared twice are large (circumferentially) from the very heavy fur coats they had started! |
