Once again the western central Piedmont of NC is missing most of the precip. The last 6 storms have given the Mt's, foothills and coastal plain good rain but we in Rowan are close to 2 inches below normal for April. A trace yesterday afternoon about 1pm and 0.05 between 4am and 7 are all we have received so far. The cold front passing later today looks to give us some, hopefully with a thunderstorm. We have received over one inch of rain from this storm the last 2 days. This nice steady rain has saved our Counties strawberry crop to this point. A steady, light to heavy rain, the entire 22 Hr. period. This is the first time I've had to measure both cylinders by the designated procedure. A flood warning was issued for our county (Rowan) and most of NC for most of Sunday and early Monday. Many valley areas were flooded and some roads temporarily closed due to localized flooding in NC. Some streets and fields all over Rowan County were flooded. Standing water still on some lower roads with blocked or little drainage. This is the most rain this year in 24 hrs in Rowan County. There were very few times when it thundered in the distance - none of this total came from thunderstorm downpours. |

I sent in a significant weather report yesterday. The most rain in an hour in years here was yesterday with 0.80 in the first half hour and 0.31 in the next 20 minutes for 1.11 " in 50 minutes during a windy, heavy rain thunderstorm. About 3:10 to 4pm Sunday. This gets us to 2.37 for July just a bit behind normal but we have more than 3 inches to make up for May and June. We are very happy with this rain. |

I am as excited as a meteorologist can get. We not only had the second largest 24 hour rainfall/ moisture (i.e. snow and ice melted), for 2015 since 4/20/15 but if we get only 0.02" today, and we should, it will be the second most 2 day total for the year. We started our moderate drought in late April with MAY JUNE AND JULY WAY below normal. We are over 7 inches below normal now for 2015. Yesterday it was 8 inches down before the big thunderstorm @ about 9pm Tues. and several smaller storms during the night. I will report the totals for 7am today to 7am 8/20 in the next report. |

Record low temperature for Rowan County this am 45 degrees and still dropping; 44 at Rowan Airport Very dry.Our local paper puts parts of Rowan at 12 to 14 inches below according to the NWS. I have my location @ 7.07" below for the year but that is because of an above avg. wet winter. . I have been reporting for CoCoRaHS during that time. We average 3.74" of rain( and/or melted frozen precip.) per month or 44.88" a year in Rowan County |

Dry we should be classified IN THE MODERATE DROUGHT category. We have been before with even more rainfall in some years- the past 40 years in Rowan. We are 12 to 16 inches below in Western Rowan. 8-10 below in Salisbury area and 10 to 12 below in Eastern Rowan. There are pockets that are worse in all areas. Check NWS. |

RAIN began @ about 7pm Thurs and I dumped the rain gauge @ 7am exactly so this is the greatest 12hr. rain since 8/19/15 One month and 5 days ago and it is still raining. Praise the Good Lord. That makes 1.49 for the month over 2 inches behind but a big improvement and still raining form the big Low centered in SC, a Nor'easter that started off the SC coast 2 days ago. This one storm could move us out of a moderate drought. |
