crystal clear Gordon Creek was higher, dirty brown yesterday afternoon.
still wondering if the "explosion" which seemed to be the third clap of thunder, could have been the sound of lightening hitting my metal roof. Sounded like a cherry bomb in a metal trash can, but much greater magnitude, and the house shook. All lights flashed off then back on, and my portable phone which was happily charging in its cradle, no longer works. |

sorry. Just starting to rain when I sent out, so maybe being late does not throw off the comparisons too badly. Normally the power goes out here every time the weather changes, but only minor power outages yesterday, while much of Portland and Vancouver was without power. I always want to call and compliment PGE when we get that rare storm without a power outage, but they are probably still busy with the thousands not as lucky.
hail 3-3:15 as hiking to the stream, most of the time mixed with rain. When all was over, the sun came out and evapotranspiration came off the hillsides like smokestacks, an amazing sight. |

Mist-- or low clouds?-- rising up from the canyon like smoke from a fire. Many pairs of shoes, pants, and multiple raincoats litter the room, spread out to dry by the heat of the wood stove. The puppy's many disemboweled teddy bears-- and their disembowelments-- also litter the room, very appropriate for Halloween, most eyes and noses gone as well. Too bad the damage is not limited to teddy bears…. |

Yesterday was a day of flying branches and falling trees. Up much of the night with neighbors helping to clear a great doug fir and several smaller trees blocking the way to the road, neighbors armed with chain saw and tractor. thank god for neighbors. My little chain saw would barely make a dent. Tomorrow I will hopefully walk the trails, praying my favorite trees still stand. |

A humming bird was buzzing my head as I put out the feeder this morning; Audubon told me to bring the feeders in at night; in the morning they stay unfrozen long enough for the little hummers to relieve their overnight hibernation and fast. Lots of light though skies are grey, mist in the canyon. Not raining now. Did not rain yesterday until night fell.
ADD: Hail today at 2:15, 4:15,8:15. Wind suddenly came up and then very small hail at 2:15, lasting 15-20 minutes. Rain alternating with sun after, then bigger hail at 4:15. Just now my dog treed a huge barred owl, or he thought he did. The owl kept swooping down over my beloved cat Spenser, who would not let me catch him and lock him inside. And then it began to hail again. The barred owl is as bad as the bobcat, waiting next to the house for a kitty cat to emerge. Would not have known, if my dog Jack who never barks except when he trees something like a bear, was not barking and looking up in the tree. The owl sits huge on a branch, and is massive with wings outstretched swooping down upon us, and not at all afraid of me with my flash light or Jack running below him. |
