All of the rain (1.76) fell inside an hour (530-630 PM) with nearly all of it between 540 and 625 PM. There were two very heavy cells, one around 545 PM with peak intensity of 8.23 inches per hour. The other was about 615 PM with peak intensity of a remarkable 15.16 inches per hour. Maximum wind gusts were around 30 mph.
A thunderstorm complex affected northeastern Prince George County for over two hours. A thunderstorm moved east into the area. A surge of humid air from the south intensified the storm but also kept it north of my location. Heavy rainfall first concentrated along and north of route 10 (within about 3 miles of the James River) with over an inch of rain from about 430 and 500 PM. Some close cloud to ground lightning occurred at my location beginning around 500 PM which slowly increased prior to the rainfall.
Finally outflow from earlier storms made it down to my location and rain began about 535 PM. A thunderstorm cell brought the first bout of very heavy rain. As that moved off to the east another one formed and arrived half hour later. As the whole complex moved off to the east, an impressive rainbow formed which remained for a good while after the rain stopped. Watching the radar, this whole storm completely dissipated less than an hour after it departed here.
