The rain yesterday afternoon and some last night continued to be gently delivered. Runoff from the terribly dry soil was minimal. Although not 'drought-busting' the rain was surely of the most benefit to our native plants that use moisture through their leaves to sustain themselves. The fogs, in the last several years, have not been as prevalent as they have been historically so the native plants really benefit from even the lightest rains. Our Santa Ana conditions finally sprang into full bloom yesterday afternoon in my area with the arrival of strong northeasterly winds and a drop in humidity. Today, the temperature is warming somewhat quickly but the winds have not materialized where I live.

What I hope is the first many days of Fall weather seems to be with us. With a 7 a m temperature of 55° and humidity at 93%, the morning feels nicely crisp. The cottonwoods in the creek behind my house have begun to turn yellow although the drought has made many of the leaves a crunchy brown instead of the brilliant yellow that I so eagerly anticipate in the Fall. Today has been peculiar. As I took my morning walk, the skies were overcast and the temperatures were cool. When I returned to my car, the temperature had increased as had the bugs. The 7 a m temperature at my station was 54 ° and the humidity was 76%. l
Later afternoon at my home, once again the bugs began to hover and annoy. I'm not sure if this appearance of insects that are really annoying and persistent is a product of my imagination or a real increase in the insect population ------- but it is annoying and sometimes painful. |

Although the last few days have been dry with very cold mornings and cool days, the plants out in the open spaces have begun to respond to the recent moisture and show signs of greater fulness and some have even responded with sprouts of green leaves. Yesterday afternoon and last night were among the most exciting hours of weather that have struck this area in my recent memory. Wind, lashing trees, pounding rain, and more wind. Banging screens and a creaking house. And then in the wee hours of the morning came what I thought was hard rain hitting my bedroom windows. This morning I discovered it was hail. Although there was no hail in my yard, lingering clumps of it lined a nearby trail system on the north-facing trail cuts. All very exciting. |

Surely the record-breaking high temperatures here is good ol' Southern California will put a damper on any enthusiasm for a record-breaking El Nino that was to have helped solved our 4 years of drought. It was very hot today, actually the kind of heat that drives one to take shelter in the long, skinny shadow cast by a light pole. I guess there is always hope for the months to come, but I'm getting discouraged about any rain. So sad. |

The native wildflowers are in bloom in places, the ceanothus covers some hillsides with its soft purple-blue blooms, the grasses in the open spaces are a vibrant green. However, these signs of a vigorous spring might be cut a bit short if more rain does not arrive to support the growth. |

Since spring has sprung for our chaparral plant community locally, here are several native plant species that are in vigorous bloom around a nearby water storage lake that has an intact and thriving chaparral plant community: buckwheat, blue dicks, deer weed, wild onion, bush rue, salvias, popcorn flowers, blue-eyed grass, encelia californica, lemonade berry , amole. There will undoubtedly be more native plants in bloom as the weeks pass. |

A dense early-morning fog rolled and and rolled out quickly, as has been the case for the last few mornings. In the distant skies, stars still sparkled. So I think a small but lively rain cell passed over my station dropping a whopping 0.02 inches of rain, the first measurable precipitation in my gauge since May 30. The rain had fallen gently and consistently overnight so it is soaking in without undue runoff.
