I left the complete gauge out for the day to try to catch all phases of the event. Rain started in the morning very light at first and then gradually increased. At midnight it was still rain which changed freezing rain, then snow. There was a total of 12.9mm water and 0.5mm ice in the small collector and the snow collected in the top (melted to 8.8mm water) - total of 22.2mm water. Snow depth is 1.5cm with just a fine layer of ice pebble underneath it on the wood collector and 3cm on the car. The temps have been warm the last couple of days so surfaces had to cool before the snow actually accumulated so the snow depth versus water content is very different. The snow is very wet (and still falling). I'm estimating a 5:1 ratio for water content so probably about 4cm of snow total. |

Merry Green Christmas. It was +11C when I got up yesterday morning. High southerly winds had melted and evaporated all signs of winter. High winds continued all day, power outages abound throughout the north. The occasional few drips of fine rain or drizzle may have been small shreds of clouds ripped off by the winds. The moon lit the sky last night and lanterns lit many houses. All in all it was a cosy Christmas Eve. |

We sure dodged a bullet. This was supposed to be nasty. A lovely day - warm and windy - perfect thawing weather. The snow pack dropped 16cm to 52cm. Frost overnight. And my car slid in the driveway yesterday afternoon into a steep area and got stuck! I left it with a couple of old rugs shoved up against the front wheels to freeze them in over night. This morning I was able to drive it forward the length of the rugs. Now I should be able to angle it out away from the hedge and back it out once the surface melts again. Then I'll move it into the bare area. That's life in a hilly town. |

The swans are back! A small flock of trumpeters were blown of their migratory path by the continent deep weather pattern upset of Hurricane Katrina. They landed in the old flooded stope across from us and stayed until near freeze up. The first we had ever had and they attracted lots of attention. Must have liked the pond because next spring they returned and nested. They now have spread out to a few of the small quiet lakes every year. This year, a pair are building a nest in the pond so we'll hopefully be able to watch the babies from our front deck. What a treat! |

Scary evening last night. On the 39th anniversary of the Cobalt Fire, a wildfire sprang up very close to town Coleman Fire Dept volunteers zipped around the perimeter of the forest trying to find a way into it. The MNR came to the rescue and helicoptered men into the area and put it out in a couple of hours. Thanks guys. That was too close. Thank goodness the winds were light or it would have spread very fast. |

A line of thunderstorms passed through in mid-afternoon. Very strong winds in Haileybury 5 miles to the north as the front approached close to 3pm. Cobalt was on the edge of the T-cell and received 4.3mm of rain in 25 minutes. Then the sun came out again. |

Thunderstorm starting at 4:38pm and ending at 5:15pm dropped 28.1mm of rain and uprooted trees and broke branches. Lots of circular motion - the rain was coming in all windows at the same time - but no sign of a funnel. The soil is shallow in most places so small trees without an extensive root system tend to uproot. Very heavy rain sounded like hail hitting the windows, but no actual hail. Temps dropped about 10C but gradually recovered a bit throughout the evening. Cloudy this morning. |

Another perfect day - lots of sun. The leaves in the bush are turning gradually and some of the bright reds are coming on. For naturalists - we have FIVE little brown bats in our Colonial tour mine! They didn't all die off with white nose. What a relief. They are such cute little fellows. Hopefully the epidemic is over and they will repopulate. |
