Light rain showers began yesterday at about 4:00 p.m. with a break after about 8:00 p.m. (produced about 0.10" accumulation). At about 9:50 p.m. a thunderstorm dumped moderate-to-heavy rain until about 10:15 p.m. It rained lightly most of the time until well after midnight. (That added 0.66" to the gauge.) Sometime before dawn the rain changed to really-wet snow. It was not precipitating at observation time. Snow accumulation was wet and very dense and only on grassy areas. |

Show began very early this morning about 12:50 a.m. Decided to wait until storm's end before venturing outside and making measurements. New snow depth came from what was in my gauge and on my porch's picnic table. My yard had a lot of drifting, and snow depth varied from near zero to at least 23 inches. Getting a representative core sample was a challenge (and I surely failed) -- the gauge was shorter than snow depth (about 12.5") where I chose to retrieve my sample. I still decided to report it. |

I tried to find a representative area of my yard and make a core measurement, but again, snow depths varied from less than an inch (where the wind had scoured it) to drifts about 30" high. I made 20+ depth measurements, settling on 12.0 inches, but my margin of error could be more than +8/-3 inches. (The gauge on my Davis Vantage Pro2 performed even worse than my CoCoRaHS gauge, melting only 0.46".) During the height of the storm, winds were averaging about 14mph from ENE. Peak gusts were averaging about 25mph. |
