Monthly total is now just above 3" of H2O, or the 3rd highest on record; need another 0.49" to break the record of 3.54" in 2006 (the top six Octobers were during El Niño situations: 1997, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009, and now 2015, all above 2.75"). Won't comment on the snow totals for now, there is still another week to go... |

Unfortunately, Boulder County was in the donut hole of this storm, I would not even call it a dry slot since the circulation was so weak. Today may be the coldest day of the bunch, still hovering below freezing after 11am MDT and mostly foggy (<200m visibility). Enough residual radiation to make the snow melt off the roof/trees to add a steady drip to the soundscape up here. Measured 1.1" by my arrival around 6:30pm MDT (and 0.18" from the snow that melted from the funnel at this point, about 0.12" had melted before into funnel before), a few minutes of decent snowfall around 7pm (even some dendrites), then the wimpy snowfall torture continued all night for another 1.1"/0.09" by observing time this morning. This ended up being the last measurable snowfall of the season (last one in June was in 2008). While overall median date for last measurable snow is the 28th of May (since 1990), the last nine years have seen a median date of the 17th of May, i.e., this year's event matches the new normal (0.5" fell after midnight). |

Jackpot, major storm came thru around 2:30pm MDT (based on radar returns up to 50db), video footage by neighbor indicated small hail that covered the ground, and then melted for another half hour or so after the first 1/4" of moisture fell in just over 10'. Surprisingly few puddles when I got home late in evening, ground must have really wanted to swallow this moisture up! Speaking of a dry summer, my first aspen are turning (some leaves), a tell-tale sign! The fact that we have already had 4 nights in the 30s probably helps, too... |
