Snow began falling shortly after 8 AM and continued until about 1:00 PM. At 12:40 PM I measured 0.8" of snow. A lot of the snow melted on contact or quickly settled so more than that amount actually fell. The snow turned to steady rain in the afternoon and evening and continued well into the early hours of this morning. Most of the snow that had fallen earlier in the day melted in the rain. The snow line this morning is less than a quarter of a mile from our house (possibly 200 feet in elevation higher). It's not common for us to get an inch of precipitation from one storm here in this area. |

I measured new snowfall at 5:30 AM before it got windy. Measurements varied from 4.9" to 5.6" for new snow. Average of various measurements was 5.3". My 7:00 AM measurments confirmed an average of 5.3" new snowfall. Total snow on the ground measurements varied from 4.5" to 6.0". I took several measurements that averaged 5.3" on the ground as well as on the board. It is still snowing lightly with occasional periods of wind and blowing snow. So far visibility is fairly good since the snow is wet and heavy and not moving too much in the wind. |

I suspect that the rain gauge missed some snow due to wind and I also think that total snowfall on the ground could have been too high because of drifting. I compromised and made my best estimate of new snow to be around 1.3". Snowpack is very soft and it's easy to dig to the ground in most places however, in a few places there is a very hard crust about 8.0" below the surface. In general if you step off the packed path in snowshoes the snowpack will not hold you up.Today's snow core was taken where the snow was soft. |

Precipitation began as rain and changed to snow. High wind likely caused the gauge to miss some of the precipitation and new snowfall measurement is an estimate. Surface of the snowpack is icy. I had to break through the ice with a trowel before I could get my snow stick through the surface to measure. This hard crust on the snowpack may really impact the wildlife in this area. They've already had a hard winter digging through the snow for food. The up side is that the warm temps and wind have eroded the snow on the ridgetops but that is not where the best food source for wildlife is found. Warm daytime temps may help soften the snowpack surface. We'll see. |

We've lost 5.0" of snowpack since last Monday due to warm temperatures, wind and less than a half inch of new snow. The snowpack now has about an inch of hard packed snow on the surface but remains loose packed under that. Another change in the past week is that we now have bare ground on the tops of ridges. My total depth of snow measurement was taken down in the valley where there's very little bare ground showing. I'd estimate snow cover to still be about 95% of the general area. |

We've had the least amount of snowfall this month of any February since I began with CoCoRaHs (2010 was my first February). The snow just kind of stopped after the middle of the month. Snowpack is stable here at this station in spite of recent warm temperatures but SW hillsides and ridges above us are showing large bare spots. Most of the new snowfall came in at a nearly horizontal angle at times due to wind. Several times during the snowfall we had whiteout conditions. Actual rain gauge measurement this morning was 0.01". There was an inch of snow stuck on the west side of the gauge so I know there was more snow than what was in the gauge. Vertical surfaces where the snow stuck were about 1.5" deep. I took a core of 1.5" and it measured 0.18" of water.
