1/4/2016 7:00 AM 0.78 M M M M Much-needed, steady light to occasionally moderate rainfall that started yesterday afternoon ended in the pre-dawn hours this morning. It was more than recorded for the entire month of December and the greatest 1-day rainfall since the 21st of November.
1/5/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A wind gust of 38 mph from the NNE was observed in the pre-dawn hours.
1/6/2016 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M
1/7/2016 7:00 AM T M M M M The strong onshore N/NE flow continues this morning.
1/8/2016 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M The light early morning showers ended around dawn. The sky is still overcast. After a week full of strong/chilly N/NE wind, the wind is now calm.
1/9/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Wind light NNW with moderately thick fog this morning limiting visibility to around 0.5 miles.

1/14/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
1/15/2016 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Overcast with very light rain at 7 am. Wind south 14 mph gusting to 21 mph.
1/16/2016 7:00 AM 0.92 M M M M morning's moderate to heavy rainfall occurred primarily between 9-11 am. A wind gust of 39 mph from the west and several rumbles of thunder was observed.
1/17/2016 7:00 AM 1.44 M M M M A heavy thunderstorm shortly after 3 am followed by another longer duration moderate shower accounted for the 1.45" accumulation. The total rainfall measured is well over the climatological average for the January with 2 weeks remaining.
1/18/2016 7:00 AM T M M M M The trace of precipitation occurred several hours after yesterday morning's 7 am observation when the surge of cold Canadian air behind the frontal boundary scoured out the last vestiges of moisture. This morning's low of 43F with a NW wind of 12 mph is mitigated somewhat by 100% clear sky and bright sunshine.
1/19/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M This morning's low was 38.6F observed shortly after sunrise. The coldest temperature so far this winter felt even colder to exposed flesh given the brisk 10 mph NNW wind.
1/20/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M At 7 AM: 37.4F with calm wind and clear sky.
1/21/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 7 AM temperature was 44F with calm conditions and high a veil of cirrus. Overnight low was 43F.
1/22/2016 7:00 AM T M M M M 65F and overcast at 7 AM with sprinkles in the area, wind SSE 14 mph.
1/23/2016 7:00 AM 1.74 M M M M 1.6" fell in 40 minute deluge starting at 11:25 AM, accompanied by several rumbles of thunder and a wind gust of 35 mph from the west.
1/24/2016 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 32.3F observed at 6 AM with a NW wind of 5 mph. Yesterday's high temp of 56F occurred shortly after midnight. The daytime high was only 48F due to ongoing CAA (cold air advection) and heavy cloud cover until mid-afternoon. Wind sustained 20+ mph from the W/WNW (gusting to 40 mph) made for a bone-chilling 12-hr work day at the Ponce Inlet light station.
1/25/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M At 7 AM observation: Clear sky, calm wind, 39F with heavy dew.
1/26/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
1/27/2016 9:00 AM 2.32 M M M M At 9 AM (rain-delayed) observation: 65F with very light drizzle. The moderate, long duration rainfall occurring in the 6-hour period from 3 to 9 AM accounted for the greatest calendar day rain total since I relocated to Daytona Beach Shores 1.8SSE (from Scottsmoor 2NNW) in April 2015 (and more rain is in the forecast for later today). The previous greatest 1-day rainfall I have observed at this location was 1.95" on August 15, 2015. 6/6/2016 7:00 AM T M M M M After all of the hype about widespread heavy rainfall in excess of 5", only a brief sprinkle was observed yesterday late in the afternoon. It appears that the heaviest rainfall associated with poorly organized TS Colin will be along portions of central Florida's immediate west coast. I believe my location on central Florida's east coast will be lucky to get an inch of precip out of this tropical system before it accelerates away to the NE.
6/7/2016 7:00 AM 1.21 M M M M 1.21" rainfall spread out over past 24 hours was much needed and hopefully is a kick start for the summer monsoon season here along the coast in east central Florida. 7/3/2016 7:00 AM 2.75 M M M M Yesterday afternoon around 3pm a line of broken thunderstorms building as they approached the coast from the WSW hit the weak sea breeze pinned along the immediate coast, greatly enhancing convection and allowing the storms to back build and consolidate overhead. Torrential rainfall followed with the bulk of the 2.75" falling in 45 minutes. Cardinal Blvd in Wilbur by the Sea was temporarily flooded and shut down by 1' of ponding water. This rain event was the greatest since early February and nearly matched the entire amount received in June.
7/4/2016 7:00 AM 0.10 M M M M A brief/isolated late afternoon shower (no lightning) accounted deposited 1/10" of rain just before sunset.
7/6/2016 7:00 AM 0.78 M M M M Spotty, slow-moving thunderstorms formed along the coast in central/south Volusia County in the heat of the afternoon yesterday, then zippered down the weak sea breeze front into north Brevard County by evening, producing vigorous/concentrated lightning strikes and brief torrential downpours.
7/7/2016 7:00 AM 0.51 M M M M An isolated early evening thunderstorm developed inland then drifted east across the coast, dumping a little over 1/2" in 15 minutes. After a relatively dry June, measured over 4" in the first week of July.

7/27/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It has been nearly 3 weeks since measureable rainfall was received (0.02" on 7/8). Many days there have been no clouds to temporarily block the relentless, intense July sunshine. The only saving grace during this dry spell along Volusia County's coast is the daily afternoon sea breeze providing some cooling off the 86F Atlantic Ocean.
7/28/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M More pelican droppings than rain in the gauge the past 3 weeks. Now 20 days without measureable rainfall in the heart of the "wet" season. Very low (10-20%) chance along the Volusia coast the next 4 days.

7/30/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The phenomenal mid-summer "wet" season rainless streak continues with no relief in sight along the east central Florida coast. Many days during this 23 day drought there is little to no cloud cover, especially during mid-day. Consequently, the landscape is parched and long-established plants are stressed out and dying. Even with frequent watering, the hot pepper plants that I grow are withering and the peppers in full sun are blistering.

8/1/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another goose egg to enter for precip, making it 25 days and counting since measureable rainfall was observed the first week in July. The 2.75" that fell in 45 minutes on July 2nd masks just how dry most of July was here at this location on the east central Florida coast.
8/2/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another hot/dry day. PWAT's up overnight, so at least there should be some scattered showers/thunderstorms within 20 miles late in the afternoon.
8/3/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Day #27 without a single drop of rain at this observation station 2 blocks from the Sun Glow pier in Daytona Beach Shores. Thunder was teasingly heard yesterday mid-afternoon, but the widely scattered thunderstorms stayed on the west side of the Halifax River. Today's 50/50 chance of thunderstorms may be a little closer to the coast before the afternoon sea breeze nudges them further inland. Tomorrow looks like better odds that we will finally end the record-setting (for "wet" season) rainless nearly streak.
8/4/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Today's prospects to break the 28-day rainless streak here in Daytona Beach Shores is the most promising (60% chance) in many weeks. Melbourne should see their rainless 31-day streak end today given the morning radar showing northward moving convection near Sebastian Inlet in the south end of Brevard County.
8/5/2016 7:00 AM 0.08 M M M M Purple Rain! Measured 0.08" from 3 different sprinkles during yesterday afternoon, ending the streak of rainless days at 28. The purple color was from rehydrated bird poop that was deposited in the rain gauge during the drought.
8/6/2016 7:00 AM T M M M M Close but no cigar... A broken line of rapidly building cumulus and swirling black frag produced by an outflow boundary from inland thunderstorms to the west moved across the central Volusia County coast yesterday afternoon. The convection erupted in an elongated line of thunderstorms just offshore from Daytona Beach down to Ponce Inlet. Several very dangerous lightning strikes were observed along the beach with only a trace of rain from blow-back as the storms drifted away.

8/8/2016 7:00 AM 0.38 M M M M Finally! A heavy but brief early afternoon shower (no thunder) moved rapidly across the coast from the southwest, producing the most significant rainfall in an over a 1 month span in the heart of the "wet" season (since 0.51" fell on July 6).
8/9/2016 7:00 AM 0.48 M M M M A small, fast-moving thunderstorm cell raced across the coast from the SW yesterday afternoon around 2 pm. The brief torrential downpour was accompanied by wind gust of 45 mph (est), tearing numerous small branches from trees in the yard and moving heavy plastic chairs on the patio several feet.
8/10/2016 7:00 AM 1.22 M M M M Very welcome soaking rainfall event along the coast yesterday. Thunderstorm came up quickly from the southwest late in the afternoon, initially produced torrential rain, gusty wind and close proximity lightning, which was followed by a several hours of moderate/soaking rain with occasional distant rumbles of thunder.

8/15/2016 7:00 AM 0.22 M M M M A narrow band of showers moving up the coast from the SSE in the mid-afternoon produced a brief heavy shower as it passed by, then developed into a thunderstorm just to the north, as evidenced by rumbles of thunder after the shower departed. Media reported lightning struck and disabled a Volusia Beach Safety jeep and a man on an ATV on the beach 5 miles to the north.

9/1/2016 7:00 AM 0.40 M M M M Light to moderate off/on rain showers (w/o lightning) accounted for beneficial precipitation past 24 hours. The ongoing multiple-day rain event produced by ample moisture from the southerly flow associated with the broad circulation of Hermine in the Gulf.
9/2/2016 7:00 AM 0.83 M M M M 2 periods of moderate rainfall (yesterday late afternoon and this morning in the pre-dawn hours) associated with the broad circulation of Hermine accounted for beneficial/soaking precip. Wind has been steady 10-20 mph from the south with peak gusts of around 30 mph in rain bands.

9/4/2016 7:00 AM 0.80 M M M M A moderate to occasionally heavy mid-afternoon shower lasting an hour moved across the coast from the west. Only heard one rumble of distant thunder.
9/5/2016 7:00 AM 0.12 M M M M 7th straight day of measureable precipitation. Prior to this string of wet days, only 6 out of 53 days during the period from July 8 to August 30 had measureable rainfall.

9/12/2016 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Widely scattered showers observed well out to sea over the Atlantic Ocean at sunrise. This is a good sign that the local atmosphere will moisten up today given the deep tropical SE flow.
9/13/2016 7:00 AM 0.49 M M M M Several rounds of brief torrential rainfall (accompanied by sustained wind from the east 20 mph gusting 30+) observed before sunrise this morning. The spinning circulation south of here responsible for the squally weather was visible on radar just inland from Melbourne.
9/14/2016 7:00 AM 0.55 M M M M Tropical system 93L (pre-Julia) produced sustained 35 mph winds (gusts to 55 mph) around noon on 9/13 as it tracked up the east-central Florida coast. Total rainfall from this event at my location in Daytona Beach Shores was barely over one inch. Maybe the horizontal nature of the wind-driven precip had something to do with it. Considerably higher rain totals were noted a few miles to the south. Hopefully trailing moisture will bring more rain today as the deficit for this summer is still around 10".

9/28/2016 7:00 AM 0.31 M M M M Early evening thunderstorm to the west and south crept close, then followed by nearly 2 hours of light "debris" rain.
9/29/2016 7:00 AM 0.40 M M M M Late afternoon/evening thunderstorm with frequent lightning pushed across the coast and out into the Atlantic. The lightning well offshore over the ocean after sunset was quite entertaining.
9/30/2016 7:00 AM 0.64 M M M M Even though my gauge just missed the 1"+ rain to the north and west, yesterday's mid-afternoon thunderstorm was the third straight day with meaningful precipitation. Still hoping for a "break-out" (>2") rain event before the dry season establishes in October.
