Traveled down to Valparaiso, Indiana for son (Thanksgiving break) in anticipation of bad travel this am. No precipitation NW Indiana at 8pm. Traffic terrible with some moderated snowfall. Returned by 10pm to find significant snowfall, 5" measured off boards and roads(mostly secondary) heavy slush covered, trees/evergreens bowing with weight of snow. Measured 7.3"updated total and 11:1 ratio as snowfall drying out with colder temperatures.
11/22/2015 7:10 AM 0.54 4.7 M 7.5 M 10° at 7:10am with partly cloudy skies. First snow flakes of the season were observed Friday at 6pm... 12" later the first major snow storm had occurred. WOW, never can I remember such a rapid/startling start to a snow season. I barely put away my patio furniture and snow blower still buried back in shed. A heavy wet snow that gradually became more fluffy by mid morning yesterday then near blizzard conditions occurred with heavy snowfall and winds gusting to 30+ mph by afternoon. I measured 12.0" here, clearing (and losing one board under snow depth) snow boards three times to measure new snowfall (non-compressed). Thought I would see more slush the snow cover, only base is slush. Water equivalent for 2 day event was 1.18" for near 10:1 ratio.

A heavy period of rainfall 1-2 pm with thunder added to an already saturated ground and top soils creating low area flooding, some rapid runoff. Very mild temperatures near record highs( near 60°). Quiet early/mid evening then winds roared over 50 mph by 9pm with garbage cans blown, gutter downspout extenders blown off. Heard our roof creaking, thought our roof shingles/siding were coming off. No damage observed at observation. Tough sleeping with all the noise and concerns.

Saved by the fact sleet doesn't stick to wires and branches prevented a major ice storm with power loss. Traveling north early was mostly snow up near county line road. Difficult walking and facing east/north as sleet pinching face. Perfect snow cone making weather. Heavy water totals near 2" here, models suggested this amount and due to deep cold surface layer prevented freezing rain and refreezing of melted snow.

An historic wind event that produced non storm winds since 1967, local O'hare measured gusts to 62 mph. Long duration winds in-access of 34-40 mph.

NW Indiana back to normal, quite a show of snow and drifted swirling snow formations ( south Hobart/Merrillville on rt 65/rt 30) . Some cars still buried in parking lots. Thunder with mid afternoon showers, and heavy to very heavy rainfall by 7:30pm, with vivid lightning (all utilities stayed on, one C-G very close and blinding) brief gusty winds (non severe), no hail here. Heavy rainfall lasted near one hour with 1" rainfall at that time. RADAR showed lesser intensity after 9pm. Very much needed rainfall, large cracks around veggie garden area. Actually could have used more rainfall, very little ponding observed, as ground absorbed all.

Hard to do any out door work under these conditions. Storms by 5pm, nothing severe as rainfall collected 0.44". Main event came by 9:30pm, with heavy rainfall and intense and vivid lightning. Nothing severe, just concerns for lightning strikes as some C-G strokes came close. All utilities stayed on. Another overflow of gauge. Near 3" rainfall since Thursday night.

Most activity missed my area, however, drove through cloud burst in northern Hoffman (wife's Co. picnic). Observed C-G lightning and small pea size hail (near H.E. high school) and minor road flooding. Another storm line tried to form by 8pm with lightning/thunder, no additional rainfall.

Heavy rainfall by 1:30pm (RADAR) as Lake breeze kicked/initiated off towering cumulus near O'Hare, north and west, that settled into my area. Drove through some curb side flooding, heavy rainfall (east EGV). My backyard low fence area was flowing like a stream as rapid runoff, ground was soggy. We needed the rainfall, previous heavier rainfalls only wet the top soils.
