We did get a glimpse of the sun just before it set and the snow started again. Just a bit on the grass now, but covering sidewalk, roof, and deck with a thin layer. There is some ice under the snow. Warmer weather on the way.

I do not have a rain gauge up at this time, but I set out a soup pot and that is what it shows on my ruler. The Root River in Preston is up, perhaps a foot, but most of this is sinking into the ground that has not yet frozen. The temperature is much colder this morning and with the wind and rain, it is a bit on the ugly side.

A quick shower with huge drops yesterday afternoon... and then last night around midnight the continuous lightning and constant distant rumble of thunder lasted about an hour. I would assume cloud to cloud lightning because there were no close strikes and the eerie roaring sound seemed to be far above us. Rain was hit and miss throughout Fillmore County during both storms.

Many trees snapped while others were ripped out by the roots. Power was out for a couple hours as trees and branches are strewn everywhere. There were a couple smaller storms in the area during the night and there is lightning and thunder at this time. It is also raining a bit with darker clouds approaching.

About a dozen lightning strikes were within a quarter mile and three or four of them were much, much closer. We have had nearly an inch of rain in the last few days and the forecast for today has the possibility of one or two more inches.

There is a maple tree lying in the street a block from my house, snapped off at the base. A few minutes after the wind, the rain started, torrents of large drops with moderate winds. At this time, the rain continues to fall. This will bring the Root River up a few inches once again.

Lightning started about 2300 and the rain a while later. Very hard rain, lots of lightning and rumbling thunder. Not raining now, but it is on the way..... once more..... several inches are forecast in the next two or three days. Root River is rising again.
9/22/2016 7:00 AM 3.74 M M M M Happy Autumnal Equinox. 4.68 inches in the last two days. Several of Fillmore County's roads are under water in low lying areas. Root River is out of its banks here and there throughout Preston. Yesterday afternoon was sunny and warm after a morning shower or two. The heaviest rain fell during darkness last night with plenty of thunder and sharp lightning. Pea sized hail and a bit larger fell from 2210 to 2220. Driving rain off and on for several hours. It is still raining lightly with more on the way. Our farmers need a week or more of dry weather.
