It's difficult living in the foothills to see a large portion of a thunderstorm. Yesterday, I went to the town cemetery to photograph storm clouds, and, to my delight, I saw my first ever shelf cloud! I also got some great shots by the lake. Sadly, we again received a small amount from the fringes. Such is the nature of summer storms. |

Severe storm warning @ 9:05pm. Watched the storm on radar as it suddenly doubled in size; eventually it doubled in size again. At 9:30, I woke my 86-year-old neighbor so she could prepare (she lives alone and goes to bed early). Fortunately,the storm petered out before it reached us. Yesterday's high temp was 97° with a heat index of 111°. |

Worked in the flower gardens yesterday early morning. Soil was so dry even in the north-facing garden which usually stays a little damp. The hostas and daylilies came up relatively easy. 74°F/DP64°F. Breezes 4-7 (nice!). Broken stratus. Acorns and hickory nuts are falling in earnest which makes for tricky walking in some places. We have had five potbellied pigs loose in the neighborhood for weeks, and they have been eating/destroying gardens. No doubt they will take a stab at the abundance of nuts. The piggies have avoided all attempts to be trapped; their presence drives the neighborhood dogs out of their minds. |

Mostly cloudy this morning. For the last six weeks or so, we have had sightings of a band of roving Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs. Two adults and three piglets. They have destroyed some gardens; they drive the neighborhood dogs bonkers. My husband got pictures of them this morning. More as the news develops. |

As I write, the five pot-bellied piggies are in our yard eating acorns; they eat loudly. Average rainfall totals to the end of August has provided them a bumper crop. Taking photos with my telephoto lens, I can confirm we have daddy and a mama who is still nursing her three little piggies...or she is pregnant. Her belly is just inches from the ground. Fortunately, the sun is shining, so I some great photos. |

We caught the very edge of a shower around 5:30pm; measured 0.01". Around 9:45pm, a small thunderstorm left us 0.17". Oaks are still dropping acorns in large numbers making walking under them somewhat dangerous. Large acorns (1.5") from the Chestnut oaks have been dropping on the metal roof of a shed. The other day, our 86-year-old neighbor thought someone was shooting at her the noise was so loud. The squirrels should have a good winter. |
