Super-hyped Hurricane Joaquin began making his presence felt on Oak Island with light, showery rain starting 9:30a-ish yesterday morning. It continued with varying intensities the rest of the day, becoming steady by 8p. Accumulations were slight, .06" at 6:00p & another .11" at 11:00p. Had a bucketing event with gusty north winds beginning around 1:00a, but sleep intervened so I'm unsure of its duration. 1.02" in the gauge this morning, with steady, soaking rain continuing. 62.6° (same as the overnight low), OVC L7 stratus fractus, mild, north wind at 12-17 mph. Barometer still trending down, to 29.92. |

Don't let the tabloid weather guys (especially TWC) fool you. Our weather-maker is that low pressure system, not Joaquin, who's still busy sinking the Bahamas. On Oak Island yesterday, I emptied the gauge of .15" at 1:30p; .15" at 4p; & .75" at 10:30p. This morning's observation netted another .18" at 9a. Between then & now, we've been having brief downpours punctuated by dry spells (relatively speaking). Recorded .12" at 9:30a after a 10-minute burst; .04" at 9:55a after a five-minute burst, & another .03" just now, at 10:55a. Weird. No significant flooding or puddling here, but Rt.17 is closed between Supply & Shalotte, &there are rumors of Calabash & Carolina Shores being evacuated. At 9a, temp was 75.4° (low 70.3°); OVC mix of stratus, cumulonimbus, & a few breaks of blue sky (!); cloying, humid air; & an easterly wind running 8-15 mph. Barometer at 29.86. |
