Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/8/2015 9:30 AM 0.14 M M M M a fairly homogenous grey-white sky, with a band of puffy white clouds in the west
10/9/2015 9:30 AM 0.01 M M M M wet grass, subdued light, white sky with some blue showing through, haze to the west
10/10/2015 9:00 AM 0.31 M M M M a grey and white sky, with pale blue showing through, light shining down on the City of Portland in the west
10/11/2015 6:30 AM 0.64 M M M M dark when I read the gauge, now pale blue sky with soft haze to the west. Power out overnight as usual with any amount of rain. A gunshot nearby when I was down at the stream turned out to be the crack of a big tree breaking and falling.
10/12/2015 9:50 AM 0.01 M M M M still a wet world, light and bright with pale blue sky overhead, a broad and hazy rather dirty looking cloud bank in the west over Portland
10/13/2015 9:00 AM 0.01 M M M M
10/14/2015 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M wet grass, please blue sky dusted with streaky haze, mist blocks the view past the end of the yard
10/15/2015 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M barely damp grass, a bright blue sky mostly covered in white, sun hitting the treetops, haze to the west, DBOP. The drought really has not ended, one day of good rain then all these dry days. Many of the western red cedar have a lot of brown in their branches. Stream is still very low except where the beaver has worked hard to keep the pond fairly deep; a good thing as usually a place where juvenile salmon hang out.
10/16/2015 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M barely damp grass, blue sky with lovely fat white clouds catching the sunlight brightly on their upper bumps and curves, haze in the west over Portland
10/17/2015 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M raining
10/18/2015 9:20 AM 0.09 M M M M grey white sky, no visibility much past the end of the yard
10/19/2015 9:00 AM 0.03 M M M M somber and overcast
10/20/2015 9:30 AM 0.16 M M M M somber and cvercast. The small perennial streams which dried up in this drought are not running again yet
10/21/2015 9:00 AM 0.01 M M M M a bright and cheery day, sky white to the west, becoming creamy ripples closer to me, then blue and white cobblestones, and blue overhead. I will make the trek to pull the most upstream of the temperature monitors, and hope I am brightly adorned enough to avoid being shot by a hunter. I hear their gunshots in the woods everyday.
10/22/2015 9:30 AM 0.01 M M M M
10/23/2015 9:30 AM T M M M M wet grass, a soft blue and white sky, becoming white to the west
10/24/2015 9:30 AM T M M M M damp grass, overcast and somber, a hopeful hint of blue behind the grey
10/25/2015 9:30 AM T M M M M damp grass, overcast and somber, trace was just two drops that rolled down when I put the center gauge back in.
10/26/2015 9:00 AM 0.78 M M M M Stopped raining in the afternoon yesterday; overcast now. Fairly windy yesterday as well as wet, but the power only went out for a few seconds twice. Unusual not to have a more prolonged power outage in this weather.
10/27/2015 9:00 AM 0.01 M M M M White clouds with a hint of blue
10/28/2015 9:00 AM 0.13 M M M M mist and rain
10/29/2015 9:50 AM 0.48 M M M M a light misty rain, visibility limited past the end of the yard
10/30/2015 8:00 AM 0.40 M M M M raining
10/31/2015 9:30 AM 1.39 M M M M Not raining now, Big, poorly defined grey clouds are moving briskly across the sky, treetops swaying. The power did not go out, in spite of the rain and moderate wind. This is so unusual, I feel I ought to call PGE and compliment them, except I don't have enough time to stay on hold, as compliments unlike power outages do not have numbers to press.
11/1/2015 9:50 AM 2.00 M M M M still raining. The above is an estimate. After I poured out the first inch, and poured out about half of the water in the big cylinder, I fumbled and spilled the big cylinder. It might really be just a bit less or sig more than 2.0. So sorry. Power still on. Will replace my jars of water for drinking when there is no well pump.

12/8/2015 9:30 AM 2.13 M M M M moderately raining. 1.86 fell by 2 am, most of that must have been during the day, as it mainly stopped raining in late evening. Power off much of the time. The stream was ferocious, full flood, brown and raging, a crash of a tree going down while I was there. Wish I could send you photos.

12/15/2015 9:30 AM 0.10 M M M M grey, not raining. the sky overhead is like a thick grey lid. There is a grey cloud bank in the west. There is a band of bright light, where the lid does not quite meet the cloud bank. It is gone now. Often at night there is that illusion of the sky as a dark lid overhead, tipped up just a bit at the western edge, letting the city lights of Portland show through.

1/1/2016 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M bright and sunny, less frost, must be less moisture in the air. I wonder whether the ice flowers will have lost their delicate and intricate definition. Let me know, CocoRahs watchers, if you would like me to email you photos of ice flowers.
1/2/2016 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M sunny, haze over Portland. Maybe DBOP, not sure. Little frost left, but humming bird feeders were frozen by evening yesterday. Anna's appear to be wintering over again, so I worry about keeping out unfrozen food for them.
1/3/2016 9:15 AM 0.05 T M T M grey, Portland not visible, snowing lightly. all the precipitation is the gauge is snow, melted
1/4/2016 9:00 AM 0.19 M M T M snow and freezing rain yesterday. car and patio with the typical bumpy shell of ice, trying not to break any bones crossing the patio to get to the gauge. Had to melt the disc of ice at the bottom. The sky is grey but bright in light, the temperature above freezing. I will mourn the loss of the beautiful ice falls of the little stream, and the ice decorations along Gordon Creek.
1/5/2016 8:00 AM 0.13 M M T M Yesterday was a day of dripping, dripping. The ice flowers had long since subsided into soft lumps of white. The little sea urchin spines on the piggyback, the ice etched veins of the maple and alder leaves on my trails, all the ice patterns decorating trees and rocks and ferns, all were fast disappearing. The ice castles and ice ramparts around the little stream weakened and collapsed, looking like the ruins of cities of small alien beings. It was like Cinderella's midnight tolling, all the magic and beauty suddenly vanishing, the world ordinary again. Temperatures need to stay in the 20s at least for ice days here. Last year there were none. Some years with cold spells in the teens, an occasional dip into single digits, have glorious ice displays, even on rushing and roaring Gordon Creek. Is it worth the power outages, not able to get to town, no water, cooking over the fire? Yes. I hope climate change will leave us a few ice days each year.
1/6/2016 8:30 AM 0.01 M M M M Blue sky overhead with wispy white clouds, beginning to consolidate, settled into a broad grey cloud bank to the west, the lightest dusting of frost on leaves and grass.
1/7/2016 9:30 AM 0.01 M M M M Grey sky with the faintest tint of blue, hazy over the western hills. A very wet world here for so little in the gauge.
1/8/2016 9:00 AM T M M M M a bright morning, blue sky overhead, with clouds to the west lazily drifting south to north, and a broad cloud band over the western hills. Sunshine lights up the treetops; cottonwoods, even in their winter bareness, seem to concentrate the light, and even pull it down their length, lit up much closer to the ground than their fir neighbors.
1/9/2016 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M lightly raining. I was off to Teacup Lake to help with the high school nordic race. It snowed off and on at Teacup while I was there.
1/10/2016 9:00 AM 0.02 M M M M sunny and bright, frost on the ground, pale blue sky overhead, cottonwoods preening as they skinny dip in the sunbeams again. I can actually see some snow on the western hills (yes, confirmed with binoculars) and it is clear enough to see the pale hoop of the Fremont bridge.
1/11/2016 8:30 AM 0.03 M M M M grey skies, a wet world. So many days this winter I marvel at so little in the gauge belying the wetness of all around me.
1/12/2016 8:30 AM 0.36 M M M M a grey, fuzzy day, mist in the canyon, not raining now.
1/13/2016 9:30 AM 1.34 M M M M raining, not lightly, not hard. As I type, it's beginning to rain harder. Mist to the ground earlier, had retreated past the edge of the open yard when I was reading the gauge, now back all around me. What is the difference between mist, and a cloud just deciding to have a sit down? This feels more like a cloud, sitting down on us, air full of moisture, some becoming rain. Power is still on, but it's time to get ready, to refill my old bottles of water for drinking, as this is power out weather.
1/14/2016 7:30 AM 0.60 M M M M raining, not hard, stops soon
1/15/2016 9:00 AM 0.35 M M M M blue sky showing in patches between wiry white clouds, clouds the texture of the stuffing that the young dogs keep pulling out of the comforter on the futon they have destroyed, the sky becoming all white to the west. As I type and look out, the clouds have coalesced overhead into a fuzzy white sky as well.
1/16/2016 9:00 AM 0.42 M M M M steady rain, moderate. However, now, as I write this, it has stopped raining, and the fuzzy grey sky has begun to separate between east and west, with a lovely patch of blue showing through.
1/17/2016 9:10 AM 0.61 M M M M raining, moderately hard. mist or a low cloud sitting past the end of the yard, and in the canyon. I have extra raincoats for houseguests arriving tomorrow, hoping they won't let rain stop them from hiking down to the stream
1/18/2016 8:30 AM 0.93 M M M M Some of the clouds are fat and puffy, with blue showing between, and the cloud bank over Portland in the west is missing, just light wisps of white. As I type this there are more clouds and less blue, but still blue patches and puffy clouds to the east. Yesterday evening, the clouds seemed to be homogeneous grey filling the sky, but suddenly as I came along the trail looking west, all the tallest tree tops turned bright gold. It was magical, lasted only briefly, and I did not figure out from whence this golden light was sent to light up my trees, how and where a broad beam of light escaped through the clouds.
1/19/2016 8:30 AM 0.32 M M M M raining lightly to moderately
1/21/2016 8:30 AM 0.35 M M M M homogeneous grey overhead, streaky clouds and light breaks to the west, not raining now.
1/22/2016 8:20 AM 0.32 M M M M a fuzzy grey sky with hints of blue; sunbreaks in the west lighting up the city of Portland. Not raining now.
1/23/2016 9:00 AM 0.23 M M M M a grey-white fuzzy sky, not raining now, a good hard rain during the night, rattling the rain chains, expected more in the gauge. Midday yesterday was bright and sunny, hiked a trail of waterfalls in the Columbia Gorge with old medical school friends. The waterfalls are full, powerful and dramatic. But it is snow we need, not rain. Only a couple small patches along the trail.
1/24/2016 10:00 AM 0.38 M M M M pale blue sky overhead, lightly dusted with white, fuzzy clouds around the edges, at least one trying to be fat and puffy, a few sunbeams lighting up the City of Roses in the west. Now, as I write this, the soft white has descended over the city, the blue sky above me here now gone, all white and fuzzy. .
1/25/2016 9:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Blue sky with gauzy white clouds in a scalloped pattern to the east, lovely as a piece of old Japanese fabric. As I write this, the clouds are becoming greyer and denser to the west, but a few sunbeams are still getting through to light up the City of Roses.
1/26/2016 9:55 AM 0.14 M M M M raining. yesterday was bright and sunny most of the day. those trapped inside, with only a couple chances to look out the window, won't believe me. Everyone with SAD syndrome should retrain for outdoor jobs.
1/27/2016 6:00 AM 0.16 M M M M dark, mist. Yesterday when I went down to the stream, a soft white cloud was sitting on it, a large cloud, filling up the bottom half of a section of the canyon. When is mist a cloud sitting all the way down? When just mist? I hope all you weather people have read Nimby, a children's book by Jasper Tomkins. This morning also seemed more like a sitting cloud than mist.
1/28/2016 9:30 AM 0.78 M M M M light rain, the soft roar of wind in swaying tree tops, time to replace my drinking water bottles and cook a hot meal before the power goes out. ADD: a few minutes of downpour just after 11, no thunder, about 0.1 inch of rain.
1/29/2016 8:00 AM 0.56 M M M M raining. We did have a period of sunny brightness yesterday afternoon. We also had some sudden downpours before noon, but I heard no thunder, saw no lightening.

1/31/2016 9:55 AM 0.04 M M M M a grey sky with hints of blue, not raining now.
2/1/2016 9:00 AM 0.15 M M M M grey skies, not raining. It snowed last night. I happened to look out and see all lightly covered in white. It was soon washed away by rain. I hope there will be at least one more time of beautiful ice and snow on the stream this winter. Everything is budding, pushing up already.
2/2/2016 8:15 AM 0.05 M M M M sunny, light frost on the ground, clear, pale blue sky, sunshine lighting up the tops of the cottonwoods
2/3/2016 9:00 AM 0.03 M M M M homogeneous grey white sky. Yesterday xc skiing on Mt Hood at Teacup Lake, periods of glorious sun mixed in with subdued skies with patches of bright blue.
2/4/2016 8:30 AM 1.06 M M M M Steady rain. Clothes and boots in front of the wood stove, still drying from yesterday.
2/5/2016 8:20 AM 0.29 M M M M a gauzy white sky, blue showing through, not raining now, a few sunbeams lighting up the clearcut across the canyon
2/6/2016 9:00 AM 0.21 M M M M a lovely cobblestone sky, though the clouds have rapidly come together since, now a wavy white sky overhead, becoming homogenous white to the west. Snowdrops are up, grass is green instead of brown.
2/7/2016 9:00 AM 0.02 M M M M a wet world, for so little in the gauge, sunny and bright, pale blue sky, a broad very dark band of grey laying over the western horizon. I hope it is a dark grey cloud bank, and not the return of the DBOP with a vengeance, after a day without cleansing rain
2/8/2016 9:00 AM T M M M M sunny and bright, blue sky overhead, hazy to the west, only a little discolored over the City of Roses
2/9/2016 9:00 AM T M M M M Another day of blue sky overhead, occasional wisp of white, sunny and bright, a light haze to the west over Portland
2/10/2016 9:00 AM T M M M M a grey white lid over the sky, mostly homogeneous, with some wavey artistic attempts to the east, the edge of the lid ending in the west, with a cloud bank over Portland and an occasional sunbreak to light up the City.
2/11/2016 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M damp grass, raindrop patterns on the flagstones still there from last evening, not enough to become confluent, grey sky, Portland shrouded in soft white
2/12/2016 9:00 AM 0.17 M M M M grey sky. yesterday I drove a very few miles to the Grange. My home woodlands were fairly warm, not windy, not raining. When I got out of my car at the Grange, I wished for my jacket, whipping icy wind, raining.
2/13/2016 6:15 AM 0.62 M M M M dark
2/14/2016 9:50 AM 1.60 M M M M raining. still. only planted 38 trees yesterday.
2/15/2016 9:00 AM 0.62 M M M M not raining now. A grey white sky, lots of diffused light even if no sunbeams, a good view of Portland. Yesterday was a perfect day for the Field Photo weekend, However, lugging trees to plant, and a shovel, I had only my phone. All are out of focus in the dim afternoon light.
2/16/2016 9:50 AM 0.62 M M M M It was not raining much yesterday, as I planted the last few trees, so most of the rain was during the night. Not raining now, air is moist, mist filling the canyon. this morning I paid too much attention to loving the dogs back, keeping them from knocking me over, and concentrating on whether water in the gauge was at two or up to the three mark, and came inside realizing I had not registered whether it was .62 or .72. So I looked at the surrounding areas' reports, and put in ,62. But often I have more rain than the nearest gauges, especially with a late reading, so my apologies. I redid all the field photo pics yesterday, but the light lacked its usual illumination of beauty, and the dogs managed to get in most of them.
2/17/2016 8:20 AM 0.01 M M M M wet grass, grey sky, becoming a band of white in the west, lit up with light

2/21/2016 8:30 AM 0.01 M M M M grey sky parting to show patches of blue. Now, as I write, rain has begun to fall.
2/22/2016 8:30 AM 0.16 M M M M mist to the ground, periodically rising, then settling down again like a resting cloud, taking a break from sky duty
2/23/2016 8:30 AM 0.02 M M M M sunny, pale blue sky with the lightest covering of gauzy white, haze and maybe even a faint DBOP over Portland
2/24/2016 9:00 AM 0.01 M M M M a drop in the inner gauge, a small fly on his back legs in the air like a cartoon characterization of fly death in the outer gauge. Sky is creamy white, bunched up here in there to show patches of blue in between.
2/25/2016 8:30 AM T M M M M bright and sunny, blue sky overhead, soft white around the edges especially west and south. the little fly's legs no longer stick straight up--- do flies have rigor mortis that wears off?
2/26/2016 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M wet grass, sunny blue sky with a variety of clouds, gauzy, daps of linear puffy clouds, hazy to the west, sunlight in the cottonwoods. Portland Water Bureau planting trees today.
2/27/2016 9:30 AM 0.81 M M M M grey and wet. The rain did not start until yesterday afternoon, and I am surprised by the amount. The best thing possible for the four thousand seedling trees the Water Bureau planted. treetops are swaying in the wind off and on. I will prepare water in case of a power outage. I saw my first stream violet blooming two days ago. I pruned the ribes sanguinium a couple weeks ago, and a few days later stuck some of the branches in the ground. They are all budding out too, the drooping pink flowers emerging, though I have never succeeded in starting one from a cutting. That inspired me to take the cuttings from pruning back one of the blue elderberry, and stick those in the ground in the places I am trying to intimidate the blackberries from returning after their major purging. All seems to want to bud and bloom and grow. I suspect the wide thistles I am pulling up will turn themselves over root down again when I am not looking,
2/28/2016 9:00 AM 0.05 M M M M the sky is mostly homogenous soft grey-white, with mist in the canyon. to the west there are grey puffy clouds mixed in, moving briskly from south to north. Wind is whipping the treetops, and branches are waving all the way to the ground. The wind at my house has usually stayed high, in the treetops. The more the timber companies clear cut the watershed, the more wind I get. I could ride my bike down my road and on to Gordon Creek Rd on what seemed a pretty calm and windless day, then come out onto the lower part of Gordon Creek Rd and literally be blown off the road, not heavy enough to stay put on the payment. I had to dismount and walk my bike until I could get back on and ride back home. Corbett is famous for its wind, but my little road is part of the Corbett "banana belt". That may be changing.

3/5/2016 9:00 AM 0.26 M M M M grey sky. then, as I was about to log in, the grey clouds coalesced in some places into puffy whites, blue sky in between. Sunbeams lit up the white buildings in Portland, and a fat rainbow arched up from the middle of the distant cityscape. And in a few moments, the rainbow is gone, the sky is a more homogeneous grey, the magic wand must have moved on.
3/6/2016 8:00 AM 0.47 M M M M a fine misty rain in the air, hard rain last night. an occasional drop of rain during the day yesterday.
3/7/2016 8:30 AM 0.33 M M M M grey sky, not raining. Brief hail at 2:11 pm
3/8/2016 7:30 AM 0.26 M M M M I am guessing, late entry, not sure why I did not write it down at usual.Or, I do know, I was rushing off to cross country ski as a volunteer with the students of the Washington State School for the Blind. I think it was raining lightly; snowed hard in the mountains. It could have been .06. Sorry.
3/9/2016 6:30 AM 0.31 M M M M grey sky, not raining when I rushed off to ski again with the WSSB kids, but snowing hard on Mt Hood and raining when I got home. What a wonderful experience skiing with those kids from WSSB. My skier was a 13 year old girl, born a preemie at 24 weeks, deserted by both parents, but blessed with a grandmother who stayed with her every day in the NICU and then legally adopted her, gave up her own life to become a full time caregiver and parent. The grandmother came to the ski days as well. This young woman amazingly turned out intelligent, thoughtful and sensitive to the needs of her friends at WSSB, and caught on to the skiing remarkably well. Keeping her oriented to space and place by voice and touch, I learned at least as much as she did.
3/10/2016 9:00 AM 0.90 M M M M a lovely day with lots of light, lighting up the white buildings in Portland to the west. Grey clouds thicker east and south, drifting north, blue sky and wispy clouds overhead, but the cloudy edges may be closing in.

3/15/2016 9:00 AM 0.42 M M M M grey sky, mist in the canyon, not raining. Mostly rainy or grey yesterday, but some lovely sun breaks. Auto correct keeps changing sunbreak to snubber, so if there is ever snubber in my note it is a sunbreak.

3/18/2016 8:45 AM T M M M M grey sky, barely damp grass. Sadly, I was in town for most of the glorious spring sunshine yesterday. The tall cottonwoods are swaying in the wind, so golden topped with their new budding leaves that it seems as if they do have a sunbeam

3/20/2016 9:00 AM 0.02 M M M M raining. must not have been raining long, given how little in the gauge. The days with golden sunshine are gone again, and unfortunately I spent most of the time in town. This year's annual Tree School yesterday was as usual well worthwhile. My four classes were Truffle Dog Training, Sustainable Forestry in the New Economy, Living with Your Domestic Well, Hand Tool Care and Sharpening. Also as usual, it was very hard to choose four from among the dozens of good classes.
3/21/2016 9:00 AM 0.41 M M M M desultory raindrops, lots of light in spite of the ceiling of grey and white mottled clouds, a lovely soft whiteness over Portland and the western hills.
3/22/2016 8:30 AM 0.23 M M M M grey sky, streaks of light where sunshine struggling to shine through, not raining now. Yesterday had several episodes of intense downpour, never lasting long.
3/23/2016 9:00 AM 0.25 M M M M linear grey white sky to the west, thick fuzzy grey overhead, with some downward swooshing brush strokes of grey--- what is that I wonder?
3/24/2016 9:00 AM 0.29 M M M M grey sky, mist in the canyon
3/25/2016 9:30 AM 0.15 M M M M Mist, a fine and delicate moistness on my face.
3/26/2016 9:00 AM 0.04 M M M M sunshine! pale blue sky with gauzy white clouds.
3/27/2016 9:30 AM 0.30 M M M M Just beginning to rain fat cold drops as I write. The sky is showing blue in patches between soft and fuzzy white clouds; mist in the canyon. thunder, a downpour, at 3:08 changed to a hailstorm, only lasting 2-3 minutes, then back to heavy rain. Now at 3:45 just raining lightly. Such a lovely spring day, constantly changing. I hear thunder in the distance again. Earlier, on the trails, some sunbreaks lit up the trillium.
3/28/2016 9:30 AM 0.59 M M M M mist
3/29/2016 9:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Sunshine! Not a cloud is in the sky, cottonwoods lit up bright gold in their new foliage. A soft haze and maybe a soft low cloud sitting on the City of Roses, and oh dear, is that the DBOP back already? So far rain has washed away all the airborne allergens of early spring, what will this bright clear day bring?
3/30/2016 9:00 AM 0.01 M M M M wet grass, clear blue sky, sunshine in the treetops, and yes that haziness over Portland IS a DBOP, only more yellowish than dark today. When the rain stops rinsing the air, pollen and pollution increase.
3/31/2016 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M damp grass, blue sky with brush stroke white clouds, sunny and bright. DBOP is broad and yellowish and I am starting to sneeze.
4/1/2016 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M wet grass, cloudless bright blue sky, a broad dark grey DBOP. The tradeoffs of sunshine, auwe.
4/2/2016 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M wet grass, sunshine. The blue blue sky of yesterday is gone; blue sky today has a light cover of gauzy white, becoming denser in the west, DBOP. Since it was gone for awhile, I will redefine DBOP= Dark Band Over Portland. Assumed to be what was once called smog, or a relative thereof, rinsed away when raining, getting darker and broader during sunny days with little wind. I have the perfect property for visually monitoring the Portland air..........
4/3/2016 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M wet grass, blue sky overhead, clouds to the south, a whiteness through the trees, hzy to the west, DBOP
4/4/2016 9:30 AM 0.45 M M M M raining. It did not start until night. sky is fuzzy grey, with a sunbreak over Portland lighting up one white building. A dead deer on my daily walking trail yesterday, looked like a cougar kill. Dogs acted like there was something up the hill. Luckily they were on leashes, though they nearly pulled my arms off. Neighbors a mile off say three cougars were in their yard and killed a baby goat and their barn cats a few days ago. They shot one of them couple days ago. Sadly, ODFW said they did not have funding to trap and relocate. Since Weyerhaeuser took over Longview timber, the extensive clear cutting all around us leaves little forest except mine and my next door neighbors and a little BLM. I don't mind the cats killing a deer on my property. However there may not be enough deer, and I worry about going on the trails with my tasty dogs and hiking cat. I have also found several feather piles, looked like ruffed grouse. Auwe. Hungry big cats and me and dogs and kitty cats. 11:14 am: either very big thunder or something has been blown up
4/5/2016 9:00 AM 0.25 M M M M Sunning, blue sky with white clouds, almost meriting the designation of puffy white clouds, except for some soft disintegration at the downwind ends. Sunning was the word which came into my mind, as I opened my eyes and turned to the window, wondering why it can change from raining to sun shining, but not to sunning. The earth is sunning herself. A more circular expression. And the sun has brought out full allergens, in spite of yesterday's rain. So many sneezes the earth must have shook, and the neighbors a mile away must have wondered whether now there is fracking on the industrial timberland clearcuts.
4/6/2016 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M wet grass, pale blue sky with a glimpse of white clouds through the trees to the south, sky gets whiter to the west, DBOP.
4/7/2016 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M barely damp grass, almost dry, cloudless pale blue sky getting whiter to the west, haze over Portland, only faintly discolored
4/8/2016 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M barely damp grass, pale blue sky with some gauzy streaks of white, whiter in the west, DBOP
4/9/2016 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M wet grass, soft grey sky. Yesterday, in the sunshine, the cougar guy sent by ODFW came to check the dead deer on my stream trail. The cougar had eaten it, left two little burial mounds with inedible parts. He found a second kill farther down the trail, not there when I found the deer Sunday. A large male by tracks, he said. He showed me how the cougar marks the trail in his territory. Indeed I have seen those kicked up marks on all my trails. I won't feel as carefree on my daily walks to the stream, but this is part of living in the woods, having to share the habitat with the wild ones. Just hope there are enough deer, and he does not turn to domestic prey as the two cougar killing neighbor's cats and a pet goat a mile away were doing. Weyerhaeuser has clearcut so much of the forest in our area, that the cougar and deer are ending up on residential woods and even the neighbor's back deck.
4/10/2016 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M a fine mist in the air, all is wet, dense mist in the canyon, gauge still bone dry
4/11/2016 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M wet grass, grey sky. dry gauge, Portland not visible behind the grey
4/12/2016 9:00 AM 0.01 M M M M a soft grey morning. too fuzzy to tell whether there is a DBOP. Cold enough last night that I fired up the wood stove for the first time in several days. I thought I was done until the fall.
4/13/2016 9:00 AM 0.45 M M M M grey sky overhead, whiter clouds to the west, a couple bright white clouds looking as if they are sitting right on the ground in Portland. As I write this, the clouds overhead are already becoming whiter as well, showing sun breaks and patches of blue.
4/14/2016 8:20 AM 0.22 M M M M raining lightly. Trillium are almost done for the year; bleeding heart are carpeting the trails, bright green and lacy, and now almost all with their pink hearts, seed pods begging to emerge like little white tips to the flowers
4/15/2016 8:40 AM 1.00 M M M M Not much rain overnight; the gauge was at 0.9 by midnight. A fuzzy grey sky, separating here and there to show patches of blue
4/16/2016 7:50 AM 0.01 M M M M Pale blue sky, a soft dusting of white, whiter to the west, sunny and bright
4/17/2016 9:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M wet grass, blue sky overhead, whiter to the west, haze over Portland, nothing but pollen in the gauge
4/18/2016 9:50 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M sunny and bright, damp grass, blue sky with a gauzy dusting go white, denser and becoming a dirty color to the west, yes, DBOP. Finally braved the cougar kill trail again yesterday; kill leftovers still present in the lower down kill site, and the dogs acted like we were followed again. Will avoid for a few more days. We interrupted a large bird, vulture no doubt, but the bird we saw circling a bit later looked more like a hawk.
4/19/2016 9:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M damp grass, sunny and bright, pale blue sky lightly dusted with white, whiter to the west, a very dark and broad and nasty DBOP
4/20/2016 10:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M clear and bright, damp grass, sky blue overhead, getting hazy to the west and a very broad and ugly DBOP
4/21/2016 9:30 AM 0.31 M M M M sunny and bright, blue sky covered with streaky white clouds, becoming white in the west, DBOP
4/22/2016 7:30 AM 0.20 M M M M raining. windy.
4/23/2016 8:15 AM 0.17 M M M M grey, not raining, an occasional little patch of blue showing through
4/24/2016 9:55 AM 0.40 M M M M grey but bright, now that I am writing this has begun to rain 4:25 thunder, three separate times I think, a real cracking open thunder, and then about 4:28 the sky did crack open, pouring down water, then hail, now I think it is both, hard to tell, looks like hail is still bouncing off the car, but not so obvous as it hits the ground now. Just now as I write, beginning to let up. and just as I logged off, down it came again, mainly hail, this time I checked, 1/4-1/2 cm diameter, rounded. Letting up again now. Car and patio are white.
4/25/2016 8:40 AM 0.65 M M M M grey, not raining.
4/26/2016 8:50 AM 0.01 M M M M Wet grass, sunny and bright, blue sky with fat soft white clouds, sky becoming white in the west, DBOP. A very wet world for just 0.01 and a small fly in the gauge
4/27/2016 8:30 AM 0.06 M M M M a bright day, sky white rather than grey, bunching up into cloud shapes in the west
4/28/2016 9:30 AM 0.01 M M M M A grey-white sky. NOAA, where was that rain yesterday?
4/29/2016 9:55 AM 0.01 M M M M grey and wet, and after I went inside, a nice rain shower, still raining more lightly.
4/30/2016 9:00 AM 0.08 M M M M blue and white sky
5/1/2016 9:15 AM 0.01 M M M M wet grass, sunny and bright, pale blue sky, whiter to the west, DBOP
5/2/2016 9:55 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M dry grass, dry gauge, blue sky with sweet white clouds, clusters of white dabs, floating slowly, hazy to the west, DBOP. Wind whipped through the trees yesterday, power out for the afternoon, road blocked by downed trees when I tried to go to town.
5/3/2016 8:40 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M dry gauge dry grass grey sky. Gloriously sunny yesterday. Is there an ingrained bees nest at the base of my gauge, or are the bees just there because of the flowers on the tiles?
5/4/2016 9:00 AM T M M M M mist to the ground
5/5/2016 9:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M actually there was one small drop, but I wondered whether it was from yesterday. wet grass, grey sky. If it just keeps looking like rain but never rains I may have to water the blueberries. I was told to never note on this public place that I am leaving town. But I have two dogs and two cats, so always have a housesitter, this time the recently retired Honolulu assistant chief of police. And my neighbors, who believe that shotguns are part of rural life, come check if any person or vehicle comes up the drive, whether I am home or not.
5/14/2016 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M grey sky, mist in the canyon, moisture on my face but not in the gauge
5/15/2016 9:50 AM 1.51 M M M M Raining. What was it NOAA said-- 50%chance showers? I have to look up when showers are showers and when they are rain. I am glad I did not do the long process of watering all the blueberries, all so dry when I returned. Everything on the trails has grown two or more feet, as well as the grass in the yard. I hike to the stream with pruners in hand, to re-reveal my trails. The hummingbirds have not slowed down, filling all six feeding places on the feeder, dive bombing and arguing. The asian plum tree appears to have set no fruit, through it blossomed well. Must have had rain when it wanted to be pollinated. Asian pear, red bartlet are covered with baby fruit. The seckel pear graft on the barlet branch has nothing this year. Last year the deer and dogs got all of them. Blueberries and apples are in between. Salmon berries are ripening in the woods, but did not look like a boom year.
5/16/2016 9:00 AM 0.48 M M M M steady rain yesterday, grey sky,not raining now. Gauge close to what it was at midnight, so not much overnight.
5/17/2016 9:00 AM 0.01 M M M M wet grass, sunny blue sky, fat puffy white clouds esp to the west, hummingbirds voraciously emptying the sugar water faster than I can fill it, DBOP. The buzz of hummingbird wings is such a cheering buzz, in contrast to the annoying buzzes of mesquites and big horseflies stuck in the house at night. Bees and hummingbirds, reminding me that buzzing can be a beautiful sound as well.
5/18/2016 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M very wet grass, pale blue sky with big and small dabs of soft white, haze to the west, DBOP
5/19/2016 7:50 AM 0.14 M M M M raining. In town all day; a few real downpours there, and looks like same up here. about .35 in gauge by 5 pm
5/20/2016 9:00 AM 0.46 M M M M wet, grey, not raining. Later on a bright and sunny day
5/21/2016 10:00 AM 0.01 M M M M just beginning to sprinkle. A lovely day yesterday. I bet all the Oregon weather moaners have forgotten that yesterday was sunny.
5/22/2016 8:45 AM 0.43 M M M M grey but not raining when I read the gauge, has started raining about 15 minutes ago.
5/23/2016 9:00 AM 0.21 M M M M A blue and white sky, now becoming more somber and grey, but still with puffy whites to add cheer. Drenching rain yesterday was sporadic, and there is not much in the gauge relative to how hard it rained. The morning amount did not change compared to last night. The dogs were locked up while I was on a chocolate shop crawl in town yesterday afternoon. When I let them out for a leg stretching run, they kept going. After 3 hrs of searching, they turned up in my neighbor's garden.
5/24/2016 9:20 AM 0.05 M M M M grey sky, then clouds becoming white and fatter and more defined, with patches of blue. Yesterday was a lovely afternoon.
5/25/2016 9:00 AM T M M M M wet grass, grey sky. It turned out to be a lovely day. I was escorted up to the North fork Gordon Creek Corbett Water Board intake, for the water supply to Corbett, a much farther distance than I had imagined. A place of forest beauty, though the drive up was through clearcut after clearcut, probably one reason why the stream is warming. I placed a temperature logger right at the intake, and one at the logging bridge. The two in the stream as it crosses my property are already in place. The stream is low for this time of year, raising concern about summer.
5/26/2016 8:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M wet grass, dry gauge, grey sky, air still full of hummingbirds buzzing
5/27/2016 8:45 AM 0.11 M M M M white sky, coalescing into white clouds with patches of blue showing. Now, as I enter this, it has begun to rain, patches of blue undaunted.
5/28/2016 9:00 AM 0.18 M M M M bright and sunny, blue sky with wispy daubs of white, now more white clouds beginning to coalesce, banking up grey in the west, DBOP
5/29/2016 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M wet grass, grey sky, too hazy to see Portland in the west. I was trying to sleep in, when I heard what seemed like a light tapping on my bedroom's sliding doors. I thought is was one of the cats knocking something about. It repeated, each time louder and more insistent. The hummingbirds rap on my window if the feeder by my window runs out, but I could see it was not empty. One cat came into view, perfectly innocent, as the tapping continued. I decided one of my neighbors might be having an emergency, and leapt up and threw open the door. Two redheaded birds flew off. They were clearly woodpeckers, but left too quickly for me to see whether they were red breasted sapsuckers or acorn woodpeckers. Probably the former, as acorns are rare. Not big enough for pileated, who do hang out here sometimes. Too much red for hairy or downy. The rapping on the house started up again a bit later, when I had the dogs out front. They barked in surprise, and the birds flew off again; have not returned since. I don't know what part of the house near my bedroom they were attacking. If they have become house attackers instead of tree feeders, I hope they will stay around my house. Some of my neighbors could take such behavior as a justification for killing them.

6/14/2016 9:00 AM 0.58 M M M M sky is white and bright. Yesterday a lovely, drenching rain squall, the kind followed by sunbeams lighting up each drop of water on each leaf, leaving 0.1 in the gauge. Most of the rest was during the night. I had stopped stocking wood inside during the heat wave; now I bring in one night's worth each time it is both cold enough and I have wet clothes and shoes to dry. 9:06 PM sheet lightening followed by a loud crack of thunder. rain.
6/15/2016 9:00 AM 0.39 M M M M a bright morning, fuzzy grey over head, puffy white clouds and blue sky to the west, now getting more cloudy as I write this
6/16/2016 9:00 AM 0.25 M M M M bright blue and white sky, fat puffy still a bit gauzy clouds. My favorite kind of Oregon weather lately: rain rinsing everything clean, sunbeams following, lighting up all the bright, wet green

6/20/2016 9:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M sunshine blue sky overhead with cheery white clouds, some almost achieving puffy white status, others cobblestoning. Hazy low in the west, with a very dark and broad DBOP. It is sad that whenever the rain stops, the beautiful sunshine is marred by the pollution sitting in the air, no rain to rinse it away.

9/24/2016 8:00 AM 0.06 M M M M Pale blue sky to the east, thick brush strokes of white over the rest of the sky, soft cloud banks to the west, sunshine on the treetops and the hills across the ravine. Something big stripped off all my asian pears, but did not break the tree in half as bear or elk usually do. The pear containing poop under the tree was huge, bear size, but with some formed components raising the question of elk. A similar poop was on the trail as we headed out to the stream in the dusk. And a little after midnight, we surprised someone large working on the apple tree, but did not see him in the mist and dark.

9/29/2016 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M wet grasss, pale blue sky dusted thickly with white, subdued light. I confess, I am not a good composter. My bin is like my freezer, everything goes in and nothing comes out. A final destination. But someone came by last night, and removed all but the most ancient remains, and seems to have run off with the top half and lid of the bin itself. Judging by the applesauce poop, it's the same someone who cleaned off all three asian pears, not gently, and all the lower apples.

11/25/2015 12/02/2015 8:30 AM 8 0.81 M M A lovely soft and misty morning, after the pouring rain, hail, wild wind of last night. I transitioned from a warm morning swim in calm ocean at Mokuleia, to a cold and wet 33 degree Corbett. The house sitters tell me it was bright and sunny and dry up until this last day.

9/30/2016 10/04/2016 8:25 AM 5 0.30 M M raining lightly. Has the time passed for the unripe tomatoes and the never having ripened since I planted them figs? I had hoped to have a silver lining to this long and dry and unseasonably hot period. I should not complain though, having eaten enough tomatoes for a lifetime this year. It is good to be home.
