After two days of amazingly high winds and almost constant roaring sounds coming from the wind blasting through the woods, it's finally calm outside. During a trail walk at dusk last night, breezy conditions finally gave way to a calm, serene sunset. There were a lot of small- to medium-sized sticks on the Badger Trail from the winds, but no downed trees or big branches were observed. |

It was raining at 7am yesterday with 0.18" in the gauge to kick off this large storm system, and it's still raining this morning at 7am. Made two "significant weather" reports yesterday for rain totals. No thunder/lightning, sleet, or hail observed. Large puddles in low areas of corn-harvested field this morning at 7am. Wind was loudly roaring through the trees for a while around 11pm. Periodic rain amounts: 7am-12pm 0.26"; 12pm-3pm 0.40"; 3pm-9pm 0.75"; 9pm-7am 0.40". 24-hour total is 1.81". Storm total is 1.99". Addendum 11/19: An afternoon look at the area waterways showed full creeks with standing water in the adjacent marshy areas. Flood-prone areas in fields are under water. River Road (a flood-prone township road) had water over it in two spots. This sort of flooding seems to happen maybe 2-3 times per year around here. |

The relatively warm, moist air has transitioned to cold and dry; plus, the very blustery wind has switched to the W/NW and it feels more wintery! It had been raining yesterday at 7am, and daytime accumulation of rain was 0.03". Overnight we received another 0.02" of rain. Storm total (11/17- 7am 11/19) is 2.04" of rain. Local streams are full to overflowing with standing water in the adjacent marshy areas. River Road has (as of 2pm yesterday) water over it in two spots. This kind of flooding seems to happen approx. 2 or 3 times per year around here. |

**Melted snow measurement is from a core sample, because the 4" gauge tube was completely full of snow.** The first accumulating snow, as well as the first winter storm, started yesterday at 3:45pm, and it's still snowing. Winds have been light to moderate since the snowfall began. The snow is very sticky--perfect for a snowman!--but not wet or slushy. A bunch of snowfall measurements were mostly 11.9-12.2", and ranged mostly 11.4-12.6". |

This morning at 7am it is snowing and the 4" gauge tube has snow in it with no liquid accumulation. Yesterday we had a variety pack: light rain, sleet, snow. The snow began in the late afternoon/evening. As the ground was bare and not frozen prior to this snowfall, snow depth measurements are less than accurate due to melting. There is a thin layer of snow and ice on hard surfaces this morning, and a thin sprinkling of snow on the lawn. Standing water remains (since the Thanksgiving rainfall) in low areas of fields and over areas of flood-prone River Road, and creeks are full with adjacent marshy areas also with standing water. |

Happy Christmas Eve! Looks like a brown/green Christmas this year. The NWS MKX office has a fun write-up on the probabilities for a white Christmas ("Christmas Day Weather Statistics 2015"). We had a few rounds of rain yesterday, the first round starting about 7am and the last round ending around 7 or 8pm. Moderate-sized puddles of standing water were noted in the fields in the early afternoon. There were bright flashes of lightning with loud claps of thunder 6-6:30pm. Yesterday's highs were in the low 50s! :) The wind really picked up later in the day and was roaring through the trees in the evening. The Monroe airport recorded a 54mph gust at 9:35pm. Will look later to see if there's any wind damage around here. At 11pm the rain total was 0.61"; no snow observed. No further measurable precipitation overnight. Addendum 12/25: No wind damage observed. |

We had a winter storm consisting mainly of sleet and strong winds from the east. Snow started about 7:30am yesterday, then we had periods of sleet and snow, transitioning to all sleet for the bulk of the storm; precipitation ended approx. 11pm. Four inches of sleet provides for a unique shoveling experience. ;) Precipitation total of is from snow core. A dusting of powdery snow fell yesterday morning, amounting to less than 0.1" on the snow board and 0.015" of SWE from the large gauge tube. A stabbing motion is the only way to insert the aluminum snow ruler into the now hard-frozen 4" of sleet that fell on Monday. Such a hard snow cover must be making things quite difficult for wildlife to get to food... so we're putting out a large birdseed buffet! :) |

It's been raining on top of the formerly-hard snow cover; now the snow is mushy. (Previously, a significant force was required to get the aluminum snow ruler into the snow.) There was a little drizzle/rain during the day yesterday, but the bulk of the 0.09" of rain fell overnight. The 7am temp is 35° with cloudy skies, no precipitation falling, and fog (not dense). The sidewalk and driveway are wet; no icing. |

Rain and fog yesterday, snow overnight. Light fog observed at 7am yesterday gradually thickened and became dense around 2pm ('significant weather report' made). With temps remaining at or above freezing and overcast skies, the snow cover remains mushy but isn't melting significantly. The 7am obs. time temp is 33°, with overcast skies, no precipitation falling. We're bracing for the blast of much colder air forecasted to arrive tonight. Oi! |

Brrrr -- the 7am obs. time temp is 8° with a breath-stealing wind. Yesterday morning the snow cover was mushy; this morning it's almost like a sheet of ice -- I couldn't get the snow ruler through it (kicked away the hard snow with a booted heel to get a place to measure). Yesterday there were a few very light snow flurries, but around 8pm there was no accumulation on the snow board and just a couple drops of frozen water (melted and refrozen snow) were in the 4-inch gauge tube. No measurable overnight precipitation. |

No precipitation observed during daylight hours yesterday; snow flurries started overnight. Obs. time conditions: 23°, snowing, strong N/NW wind. SWE for total snow depth coming later this morning. **Addendum 11:40am: After using a small drywall saw to cut around the gauge tube for a total snow depth core sample, it became apparent that the bottom of the snow pack is so thoroughly frozen to the ground as to prevent obtaining the core sample. (Last Monday it was already pretty melded to the ground, but not impossibly so.) This hard-as-ice bottom layer is from the 4" of sleet that fell on the bare ground Dec. 29, 2015. Gradually this 4" of sleet morphed into a hard-as-ice layer on the ground, and now it has melded to the sod below. Rats! |

A winter storm started with rain yesterday at 8:40am. The rain mixed with sleet at times in the late morning, but was mostly just drizzle in the afternoon and evening. At 7pm the precipitation total was 0.15" with no sleet accumulation or icing. The storm continued through the night bringing rain, freezing rain, sleet, frequent thunder (since about 5:15am), and continued gusty E/SE winds. 7pm-7am total liquid precipitation is 0.40". At 7am: Lumpy ice accretion on horizontal surfaces - consists of rain and sleet frozen together and measures 0.1" or less, with 1/4-1/2" icicles hanging from branches. We woke up to a blanket of white! The snow started after nightfall sometime and it's still snowing at 7am this morning (temp 31°) with 0.5" of fluffy flakes on the snow board.
Yesterday a gust front and sprinkles of rain rolled in at 2:05pm followed by a sleet/rain mix at 2:08pm. The sleet fell <10 minutes (with no measurable accumulation), then transitioned to all (light) rain, then quit at about 3pm. |

Precipitation amount is likely inaccurate due to snow flurries in very strong winds yesterday. Intermittent heavy snow flurries and strong sustained winds with peak gusts estimated at 50+ mph (Significant Weather report made) occurred yesterday morning and afternoon, at times causing white-out conditions. The snow quickly melted. |

Light winds and drizzle at 7am yesterday became light rain about 7:30am, then at 8:15am or so gave way to blustery north winds and intermittent light snow, which continued throughout the day and past nightfall. The snow briefly mixed with sleet around 2pm. Wind gusts were strong enough for us to watch for downed trees and large branches, but no wind damage observed. No measurable accumulations during daylight hours yesterday, but there is a dusting of snow on the grass this morning at 7am, with a temp of 24°. |

Rumbles of thunder began ~10:30pm, followed (at 11:10pm) by heavy rain and a moderate amount of clou-to-ground lightning. Overnight thunderstorms... including a strong thunderstorm that rolled in at ~12:30am (while under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning) with winds that rattled the house and tossed plastic lawn chairs about, and with loud thunder that put one's teeth on edge. (No storm damage or flooding noted.) The power went out about 12:30am as well, and a recorded phone message at the power company ~ 1am indicated many customers were without power and crews were dispatched already. After all that, a bright sunrise awoke us -- oh wait, that was the bedside lamp coming on with the power being restored... Zzzzzzzzzz. |

Around 7pm yesterday, distant thunder could be heard as storms approached from the N/NW. The very still, muggy air, which allowed the mosquitoes to feast on cloud watchers, gave way to a mild gust front (winds est. 30 mph) at 7:25pm. The thunderstorm began in earnest at 7:30pm with heavy rain and a couple brief N/NW wind gusts est. <= 45 mph; no damage observed. Light to moderate rainfall continued past 10:30pm. Storm total 0.90". |

Intermittent rain showers all day and through the night, some very heavy. Occasional thunder/lightning. Rain total 7am-5pm yesterday was 1.11" (Signif. Wx. report made). Another 0.18" fell from 5pm yesterday to 7am today. Storm total is 1.31". No standing water observed; the soil soaked up the precipitation nicely.
Dewpoints have been 68-73° since 9/5 and the mosquito population is still ferocious (full coverage clothing and head net required)-- can't wait for some cool, dry air to diminish their numbers. |

A rather long and loud (trees roaring) thunderstorm gust front at 4:40am preceded rain and lightning at 5:03am. // This month the lawn has been growing as fast as it does in June, rather than slowing down as it usually does as the fall season approaches. What happens to the soybeans and corn, standing brown and dry in the fields, when strange weather patterns bring so much humidity and rain instead of the usual cooler, drier air? |
