Also 7.6 mm water equivalent was measured in gauge for the precipitation that fell into the gauge between 4:50 pm previous day to time of observation. Bottom layer of snow was icier than top layer. As this is first snowfall - the new snowfall and snow and ice on the ground are the same value.

I measured the weight of gauge with the digital scale. gauge with frost = 466 gm and gauge empty =464 gm. using factor of 0.126 mm/gm gives 0.25 mm water equivalent from the frost.

Similarly, very difficult to measure depth of snow on board and the small amount of snow core from board again weight of gauge was same as weight of empty gauge.

12/18/2016 7:15 AM 0.23 1.1 0.08 M M Complicated reading today. Yesterday from 7am to 5pm 2.9 cm new snow giving 2.0 mm water equivalent (WE) (while gauge had 1.4 mm water equivalent). From 5pm yesterday to 7:15 am today there is snow with a thin layer of ice on top. 0.9 cm (snow and ice) on snow board giving 3.9 mm water equivalent. gauge had some snow and thin ice on northerly side of gauge giving 8.3 mm water equivalent but gauge was weighed with layer of ice on outside of gauge (next time I'll first wipe outside of gauge clean first before weighing it). Finally 2 mm of ice measured on metal railing outside at time of observation. The only confident number I have for new snow is my 2.9 cm (2.0 mm WE) measured yesterday at 5 pm so am reporting this as new snow. From 5 pm yesterday to 7:15 am today we had 0.9 cm of a mix of snow and ice (giving 3.9 mm WE) on the board.

A layer of ice was on the board under the 6.5 cm of snow and this layer of ice measured 5 mm thick. Was not able to include ice on board in the core sample taken from snow board.

Out of curiosity: Weight of gauge + frost (inside and outside of gauge) was 470 gm minus weight of empty gauge (464 g) gives 6 gm the weight of the frost in and on outside of gauge. 6 gm x 0.126 mm/g gives 0.8 mm water equivalent from frost deposited on the outside and inside of gauge. Gauge was rinsed clean on the outside then weighed again for the weight of frost in gauge but this weight was same as weight of empty gauge i.e. 464 gm.

This light snow was difficult to gather as a core sample and even then it had hardly any water equivalent. The gauge with the snow accumulated inside gave 0.2 mm of water equivalent. Gauge also had ice crystals stuck on inside of gauge walls. Outside of gauge was covered in ice crystals but this amount on outside was not considered in gauge + snow measurement.

In the area where I normally take SOG measurements I report Trace but there were a few patches of very icy snow at depths of 2.4,3.3 and 6.5 cm. Too icy for a core sample. In a shaded location I also measured average snow depth of 11.5 cm but again very very icy and too difficult for snow core measurement.

Note 1.9 mm had fallen prior to 7 am April 6th giving an overall total for this rain event of 44.3 mm. Our sump pump is working frequently in our house. Reports of flooding in streets and homes locally and in the greater Montreal area. Sandbags being handed out in Laval North of Montreal island for areas near the river. Water levels in the rivers are being watched closely.

While there is no flooding in immediate vicinity of this observation site, there is much risk of flooding in areas near the river and ongoing flooding in shoreline areas of western Pierrefonds Roxboro. There is even inland flooding at some businesses as some storm sewers cannot empty their water into the river. A number of surrounding communities have evacuated homes or may decide to do so shortly. The heavy rains in the last 24 hours both here and upstream are causing conditions to likely worsen today and tomorrow.

Yesterday's afternoon thunderstorms caused trees to fall in a Montreal downtown neighbourhood along with widespread power outages.

12/25/2016 12/28/2016 4:30 PM 4 1.20 M M Upon returning after few days away - found solid disk of clear ice in the rain gauge - no accumulation on snow board. Weight of gauge plus ice = 705 g minus empty gauge weight of 464 g = 241 g (ice weight) x 0.126 = 30.366 mm rounded up to 30.4 mm. I also melted the ice and measured the liquid directly which gave 30.3 mm with a few drops stuck in the gauge and funnels. A freezing rain event occurred during my absence at this location on Dec 26 2016.
