Quite a day -- amazing "Chinook" at work took away about 90% of our snowpack from last week -- mostly in 12 hours. Temperature soared into the 50s in the morning with winds gusting to 40 mph at times. Fairly moist air, too, for a downslope, as our mountains to our west were being hammered all day. Some sprinkles at times from spillover, but enough to wet the pavement around 8 AM -- still upper 40s at that time. Wind subsided a bit and low dropped to low 30s this morning with most of the ground now bare. |

Amazing spring storm. Wet snow fell all day with nearly steady temperatures in the 32-33F range all day and night. Trees weighed down with snow but only a few small branches fell here. Amazing amounts of water in the snow 2.23" (possibly slightly blocked by nearby tree) in my ground mounted gauge and 2.34" in the post-mounted gauge. Measurements taken by my son since I was up in Estes Park at the YMCA camp for a CoCoRaHS meeting this week where we measured 36.2" of new snow between 10 PM Wednesday and 8:30 AM on Friday -- with ~3.40" gauge catch and 3.02" in snowboard SWE. Max depth almost 28" before compaction took over. Almost no wind there for the entire storm. |

A little warmer and sunnier than the past few days with midday temperatures into the mid 70s. But the added heating inspired a round of memorable afternoon storms that moved through around 3 PM with intense rain and furious pea to marble sized hail which briefly covered the ground about 1/2" deep. Of this rain, about 0.75" fell in less than 10 minutes. Piles of hail melted by evening in or neighborhood. Lots of leaf debris still on ground this AM -- our garden damaged but will survive. Partly cloudy evening becoming overcast with fog and low stratus as this spell of cool, damp weather continues. Low upper 50s Ground mounted gauge had more leaf debris in funnel and was more obstructed by upwind trees, but still showed 0.78".
