As noted in significant report, 0.14 fell from report time in the AM until 2.5 hrs later. Then came an afternoon rain shower (no thunder) with HAIL, 1/2" for 8 minutes, with a few documented 3/4" Hails at 4:27 - 4:38 pm (approx) continuous although light. very interesting as the storm had passed us for the most part and the sun was breaking out on the backside after the rain (but not mixed with) and was very loud. this was followed by a Low of 31 and frost/thick ice on car in driveway (none noted on surfaces other than that) Welcome to October! |

breaking news-(interlake nws mso)This October is officially the wettest on record in the Flathead Valley, toppling the previous record that’s held for more than 100 years, according to the National Weather Service in Missoula.
October rainfall reached 3.41 inches at 6 a.m. Wednesday, edging the previous October record of 3.4 inches set in 1914. The 30-year precipitation average for October is 1 inch.
STATION REPORT NOTE: Due to an incident with a bee (believe it or not) trying to camp out in the rainguage, i used two inner tubes for this measurement! A temperature steady day with moderate rain AM and overnight again. 0.14 fell all day until 6pm... 0.04 fell overnight from there and it is misting this AM at report time. |

"TRACE' event AM followed by clearing afternoon and temps into the 30's at our station (33) and good melting on roof and driveway. This persisted into the evening hours when winds came up from North and temps dropped. (to -15f at airport) 1.5f this AM here. We also had an 'ice incident' when the entire northface of our roof lost a 50' long, 2 foot ice sheet covered in 15" of snow fall off with a horrendous crash. Speculating the bottom layer of ice had re-froze with the crashing temperatures overnight as we could hear the pops and buckling of our deck planks well into the morning on a regular basis during the flash-freeze event. |

Having issues. There is an uneven but very stuck-to-the-surface layer of ice under the snow on the totals snowtable. it is measuring between 1/4 and 1/2 inch. our total SWE is this snow that will come free above that layer. It is surface wide apparently. I had been wondering why the melted SWE amounts were inconsistent seeing as how we have had little snow accumulation since Tuesday...

Found a spot to CORE that didnt have that caked up ice underneath! This reading is accurate. Also we had dense freezing fog in area most of the day but no measurable precip and the hoarfrost has mostly blown off the branches now though never got above 22F here. A high of 18 at airport and a low of 12... 11F this AM. |

We went to Glacier Park Lake Macdonald and though it was NOT frozen over ten days ago when the temps were much cooler (singles and minus digits) this time bright sunshine and 30's and more than 90 pct of the lake had frozen! we were able to walk on it both midway and the Apgar boat ramp. Some melting in the higher elevations on the sunny sides was observed in photos. could this early season runoff have cooled the lake enough to finally frost over?

Winds were the issue primarily in three waves with absolute calm in between. Some seem stronger but the trusty wind gauge was showing 15-22MPH, anyway cleared out the air enough to be able to see the otherside of the lake!!! (almost) that hasnt happened in a while. Smelled really bad for a while during all of this like the whole valley was on fire. Glacier Int'l shows Gusts 30MPH @ 3:52-3:55PM. Alot of fires must have taken off at once.
