Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/5/2016 11:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Media blitz and frenetic preparations for Hurricane Matthew, which is now forecast to take a 90° turn to the east as he approaches the Carolinas late Friday. We haven't had any storm make a direct hit on Oak Island since 1999's Floyd, a Cat II at landfall. I slept through the great event. For the past 17 years it's been just rainy days with moderately gusty winds despite the fondest wishes of the NWS and the tabloid media. Today is dry, overcast, mild, with a northerly breeze around 10-15 mph. Barometer steady at 30.20. Ho-hum.
10/6/2016 10:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Still dry, still grey, still breezy from the north, Matthew now forecast to make a hook toward the south off the SC coast. Does look like I'll have some precip to report starting late tonight or tomorrow. Let's see if we make the 10-15 inches forecast for us by the NWS!
10/7/2016 10:00 AM 0.31 M M M M Overnight total accumulation of .31". Not raining at time of ob, although skies OVC and air steamy. Light northerly wind at 47 mph. I can see trees branches swaying now in an easterly fashion. Rhetorical question: do you think many people act like beheaded chickens at the hint of a storm go nuts because of their lack of connection with the natural world? Or maybe because we lurch from disaster to media-fueled disaster, either real or imagined and blown out of all proportion?
10/8/2016 3:00 PM 3.84 M M M M At 9:20a, with Matthew approaching our coast, the winds rise and rain buckets down. Emptied 2.49" from the gauge at time of ob. OVC skies, sou'easterly winds in the 15-20 mph range, with frequent more powerful gusts, consistent with the hurricane eye's current location and track. Matthew is expected to brush the Cape Fear tonight. With any luck, I'll sleep through it, like I did with Floyd 17 years ago. I remain sanguine, because we live a quarter-mile in from the shore, and our soil is sand all the way down to China with attendant excellent drainage: flooding is less problematic for us than first- and second-row houses, and much less than areas built on real dirt. Will check in occasionally during the day with rain and wind reports. Y'all be safe. 3p: Squally rain starts and stops, mostly light since around 1p. Emptied 1.33" from the gauge at 1:30, another .02" just now, bringing the total so far to 3.84". Sou'easterly wind rising, sustained in the 18-23 mph range with frequent higher-velocity gusts.
10/9/2016 9:30 PM 0.27 M M M M Tried to log in at 7p Saturday night, but Internet got blown away, haha. Recorded .21" at 7p Saturday, .05" at 9:30p, and a final .01" at 11:30p, bringing our hurricane total to 4.13". Today has been gorgeous: Carolina blue skies, mild, northerly breeze in the 10-15 mph range, subsiding to calm by 9p. Very little damage sustained on our street, no flooding at all. Husband reports beach is wider than it was on Friday: last night's stiff northerly blow must have pushed the ocean back.
10/10/2016 7:50 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another Carolina blue morning. Long-pants-and-flannel-shirt cool at 52.0° (overnight low 51.6°), and light airs.
10/16/2016 10:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Dry autumnal weather continues, with no recorded precipitation this week. BKN to SCT streaky cirrus the past few days, mild days, cool nights.
10/18/2016 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Misty and heavy dew this morning. Clear skies, cool, calm. Ninth dry day since Matthew.
10/20/2016 4:40 PM 0.00 0.0 M M M twelfth day without rain since Matthew. Mostly clear skies, heavy dews, mild to warm temperatures, light southerly winds.
10/22/2016 8:35 AM T M M M M Had a trace of rain from a brief shower last evening around 7p. The east end of the Island and Southport got more, judging from the puddles. Go figure. Quite chilly out this morning; clear skies and nor'westerly wind 10-15 mph.
11/4/2016 9:40 AM 0.03 M M M M At last, a little rain! I do mean "a little," only .03" so far from a light fall, with breaks already visible in the overcast. Nor'easterly wind, 7-10 mph, and a seasonable 65.1°.
11/5/2016 8:35 AM 0.01 M M M M Well, it wasn't much of a rain event yesterday. Recorded an additional .01" around 1p, by which time the skies had cleared and a brisk nor'east wind blew up, probably evaporating what little moisture fell. Chilly this morning, clear skies and a light NNE wind,<5 mph. Overnight low a nippy 47.7°. Windows closed, heat on, alas.
11/14/2016 11:45 AM 1.18 M M M M And rain it did. Sprinkles started at 12:30p-ish on Sunday. At 5p, only .02" had accumulated. By then, rain got serious, harder and non-stop. At 9p, .41" was in the gauge. This morning, mild and OVC with light westerly airs, I recorded .75".

9/29/2016 10/03/2016 8:00 AM 5 1.95 M M Recorded .11" at 6p on Thu, 29 Sep; .01" at 8a on Fri, 30 Sep. Left town. Back Mon, 3 Oct. At 7p, emptied gauge of 1.83". OKI's WX system down, so I've no idea about the distribution of that precipitation over the time we were away. Sorry.
10/11/2016 10/14/2016 10:00 AM 4 0.00 M M Beautiful dry fall weather continues in the wake of Matthew, a small consolation to those along the rivers who are inundated. Oak Island lost a good portion of its dunes on the oceanfront, a concern for those foolish enough to build so close should another storm like Matthew blow in this season.
10/23/2016 10/28/2016 10:00 AM 6 0.00 M M Twentieth day without rain. Mild autumn weather continues, highs in the high 60s to mid 70s, lows mid 60s to mid 50s. Thin high cirrus clouds predominate, winds variable.

11/6/2016 11/09/2016 11:00 AM 4 0.00 M M No rain to report, but am happy to say the sun did, in fact, rise in North Carolina this morning, albeit dimmed somewhat by stratocum OVC. Hey, when the leader of the free world came down to a choice between two egomaniacal criminals, we learn to take sanity and goodness wherever wee find it.

5/4/2017 5/05/2017 9:45 AM 2 2.35 M M Brief shower around 5:30p Thursday left .10" in the gauge. At 9p, rain had started up again. This morning, following an hour-long thunderstorm (approximately 5:15-6:15a), apparently composed of several little cells: awake when the the first clap of thunder sounded, I counted the seconds between lightning flashes and thunder peals for the whole hour. The shortest time was 2 seconds, the longest over 15 seconds, and most were in the 7-10 range. If that's any help at all. Anyway, we had 2.25" in the gauge at 9:45a. A mild 71.1° (low 67.8°) & a moderate southerly wind, 8-12 mph and gusting. Barometer down to 29.84.

6/8/2017 6/10/2017 10:45 AM 3 0.39 M M Computer and I engaged in a bit of a set-to, but I think all is forgiven now. Thursday, June 8, was a damp & uncommonly cool day (low 57.6°, high 68.5°). Recorded .38" in the gauge at 9a, plus another last-gasp .01" at 122:30p. OVC & coolness continued into Friday morning (56.3° low). The OVC dissipated by afternoon, with only SCT cums & cirrus left by 5:30p with more seasonable temperatures & a sou'westerly breeze. This morning, summer's back: low 71°, up to 80.8° by time of ob. Dry, not too humid, Breeze continuing from southwest at 6-8 mph. Barometer zoomed to 30.30 from Friday's 30.13 & Thursday's 30.01.
6/11/2017 7/14/2017 12:05 PM 34 1.57 M M Sorry for the long hiatus. I broke my knee-cap on 10 June, and have been pretty much on another planet until a few days ago. WX observation is one of the last faculties to melt, however, and I managed to scribble some notes about rainfall for the period. My husband emptied the gauge for me somewhat regularly, but may have missed a bit. Anyway, to the best of my recollection, here are the stats. 17 Jun: .45", don't know precisely when 20 Jun: .20" at 1p; it was a showery day 21 Jun; .30" overnight 30 Jun: .23" from two separate showers at 1:30 & 3p 4 Jul: .20" from early morning showers, at 7a & 9:30a 9 Jul: T thunder & lightning just after midnight, but seabreeze blew the rain over us 10 Jul: .19" overnight Nothing wet to report since then.
7/17/2017 7/18/2017 11:00 AM 2 2.00 M M Husband is not as assiduous as I am about emptying the gauge after every shower, but bless his heart, he's a trouper. Anyway, a thunderstorm of indeterminate length (I fell asleep counting between lightning flashes and thunder rumbles) began at 1:15a Monday morning;in the morning, there was 1.30" in the gauge. We had another little shower in the early Monday afternoon--just rain, no drama--but that total is mucked in this morning's emptying, which includes the results of the 6:25-7:00a T-storm, .70". Continuing OVC and an ominous Doppler graphic, mild-for-July temps. Barometer rising, to 30.28.
7/29/2017 7/30/2017 11:00 AM 2 0.49 M M Saturday showery. Overnight & 9-9:30a totaled .o8". T-storms at 11:50a-12:05p & 12:50-1:30p, both with occasional heavy rain, plus a quiet shower from 4-4:30p netted .41". By 10p, sky was clear. This morning, BKN puffy white cums, mild (76.1°, low 67.1°), northerly wind 10-12 mph. Barometer bottomed out at 29.89 at 9:30 a on Saturday, rebounded to 30.10 at time of ob.
8/4/2017 8/06/2017 9:45 AM 3 0.37 M M On Friday the 4th, showery 9a-2p, leaving .29" in gauge, including a trace from overnight. Saturday the 5th repeated the pattern, desultory showers 10:30a- 12:30p: .08" accumulation. Today, BKN puffy stratocums, humid, warm (80.4°, low 75.6°), northerly wind 5-8 mph. Barometer at 30.24.
