Residual sprinkles from Hurr Matthew, thankfully departed from the scene. Overcast until mid-morning, dark indoors without power. Blue skies much appreciated. Surveyed damage in area: many large trees down, but none hit homes nor cars. Much debris in yards, mostly from pine trees. One road wash-out nearby. Power restored 1230, for a total of 16.75 hrs without power. Lots of chain saw music in the neighborhood. Neuse River to flood in Kinston later this week, to rival that of Hurr Floyd in 1999. Fair and 49° at obs time. Got our newspapers--all is well. |

Partly to mostly cloudy all day. Just on the edge of a small thunderstorm in the evening. Not much rain but observed a complex rainbow that lingered for 15 or 20 minutes. First was a rather strong bow with faint double or triple bands beneath it. Then a bigger, but faint, reverse arc appeared higher above the original one, fading into its right. The original one brightened for a few moments on each end before dissipating. It was a magnificent show, and I had a front-row seat on the porch. Mostly cloudy with some hazy mist at obs time; 75°. |
