30-40% chance brought a cool, cloudy day with a little precipitation. The changing leaves suddenly accelerated dramatically in the last 48 hours. Our 40-foot-tall cottonwood finally made up its mind that fall is here and is turning yellow rapidly. Maybe a huge tree changing is like steering a very large ship: it needs to done with due deliberation. The dogwoods, cherries and currants, along with the zone 3 roses, are far along in shutting down. |

Very dry right now as well as abnormally warm. Humidity will probably be in single digits by Saturday afternoon; a bad situation for potential wildfire with so much fuel on the ground. |

About 10 gusts over 50 mph and a peak gust of 60 mph in Thursday's wind storm, all from 10-13 MST, S to SW. The wind completely blew the leaves off trees, though the roses remain unaffected. The RH got down to 11% and the visibility down to about 3 miles in blowing dust. Very rough morning.
Low was 24°F, the lowest since spring 2016 and our first freeze of fall, very late. |

Surprise rain that came in 2 storms, the 1st around 18:00 + the second around 20:00. They came from the east, a highly unusual direction for precipitation.
The second had more lightning than rain and hung around for about 20 minutes, nearly stationary. Delighted to have temperature lowered by 12° and some desperately needed moisture. Grateful. Blessed. |

1.87 inches in two days - a record in 18 years at this location.
We went from under 7 inches to almost 9 inches of precipitation for the calendar year in 24 hours.
This rainfall is 21.5% of all the precipitation we have had since January 1. That would make the news in places where they get 40 or more inches a calendar year.
The rain just fell and fell all day and some of the night, alternating heavy and light. Heavy fog rolled in by midnight. The air smells incredibly rich and moist. Amazing event. |
