The rain yesterday was mixed with a good amount of snow several times in the morning. It was actually beginning to collect on the rain gauge, but merely formed slush on the ground. First snow of the season! |

We had some "Thundersnow" late evening, sometime around 18:45. It didn't last long before it turned to moderately heavy rain for a short while. This melted such snow as fell, making it impossible to measure the depth. The rain didn't last long, either, and it was dry during the night. Roads are dry this morning. |

Difficult to be sure of the depth of snow: the wind is blowing quite hard, and my sidewalks and front deck are almost bare. But the amount on my back deck and in the gauge are about the same, which is the amount I've reported. Precipitation amount is from the melted amount in the gauge. |

I'm not sure the "total depth" figure is meaningful. Due to the wind, the snow can be found in my yard in any depth imaginable from none to well over 9 in. Reported depth is an average of several depths--probably no more meaningful than saying "wow: LOTS of snow". Depth on snow board was 5 in., which was the lowest depth I measured. Obvious drifts were not included in the average. |

We don't seem to have gotten any noticeable snowmelt or settling yesterday: this morning's readings haven't changed from yesterday. Melting core sample for weekly SWE; will report that in a little while. My front yard, which catches the winter sunlight, is beginning to show bare earth in places, but my backyard, which is much-shaded, is holding snow well. Just edited this report and added SWE: better than 12%: VERY high! |

Snow-on-ground measurement is hardly better than a guess today. Yesterday saw substantial snow melt and there are now vast areas of my yard that are snow free. Value reported is best guess of depth of remaining snow vs. estimate of clear areas. It is warm this morning and snow melt has continued through the night. |

It was another windy night, and the snow deposited on the snowboard is not a good indication of actual snow amounts. The depth measurement from the snowboard is more precise, but less accurate. The depth measurement in the gauge is less reliable, because I had to tap the cylinder to get snow off the inner edge, which would have settled the snow somewhat; nor did all the snow come off the inner edge. The depth in the gauge was 2.3 in. and its water content is reported as precipitation. The amount reported in new snowfall is taken from the snow deposited on the snow board. As you can see, the snowboard represents almost exactly half what the gauge collected. |

There is still substantial snow on the hills, and on the ground around town: in places it is still quite deep. In my neighborhood, however, it only remains in shaded areas or where the storm of week before last drifted deeply. Those areas are not representative of my yard. I have made my measurements this morning, also, from different areas in my yard to try to get a better picture of what snow remains. |

A very warm day yesterday: there was much snow melt before the half-hearted storm arrived around 14:30. Temperatures did plummet, however, with the high temperature of around 51° dropping to about 37° within an hour or so. This morning, at 06:00, I record 5°. There is still substantial old snow in the shadows of my house and deck, but before the temperatures dropped yesterday, the bulk of it elsewhere had melted. |

The snow turned into a blizzard in late afternoon yesterday. Because of the wind, snow depth measurements are largely futile: you can find any depth of snow from almost nothing, to a foot or more. The rain gauge had 10 in., which may be most representative of the depth of new snow. The snow board had the least amount of almost any place: even the railings on my deck had more. |

I'm not sure it's strictly accurate to record the white stuff in my gauge as "snow": it seems to be freezing fog settling out of the air, instead. But it's white, it's loose—unlike frost—so as what else should I report it? And the bottom of the gauge was lightly covered with it. |

It's windy this morning and it was obvious much of the snow from the snowboard had been blown away; that is undoubtedly why the core from the snowboard contains so much less water than the snow from the rain gauge. |

I Had an accident with my rain gauge this morning and spilled the contents after I had melted them. The precipitation reported is from the core sample. Sour grapes, here: the rain gauge would not have been accurate, anyway—it overfilled with snow early on and after accumulating a mound on top, additional snow fall was just sloughing off the side. |

Temperature got up to at least 38° yesterday, and we saw some significant snow melt, at least on the roadways. More bare areas appearing in my yard. As this happens, my "total snow on the ground" value becomes less and less accurate. For example, in the shade of my house's northern side, and where the wind builds up drifts during a snowstorm, I still have, in places, a foot or more of snow piled; whereas, in the areas touched by the sun, most of the snow is gone and remaining patches are quite thin. Averaging 3 points, even, doesn't provide an accurate value, since no such value is possible, and my reported values should be seen, now, as an indication of how much snow remains anyplace in my yard, rather than a literal depth-on-the-ground. |

The rain yesterday lasted for several hours, but was never very heavy. In the evening, we got a half-hearted attempt at snow, but it was so slight that this morning, it's indistinguishable from frost. The reported value for snow on the ground is just best guess average. Most of my yard is now clear, after the rain and warm temperature of yesterday; however, substantial snow lingers in the shade of my house and deck. Pointless, therefore, to attempt a SWE measurement: it would merely mislead. |

The depth of new snowfall is a best guess from several measurements; however, due to the wind, there are places where the snow is nearly 1.0" deep right next to areas that are completely barren. Streets and sidewalks show only a trace of lumpy ice. Lowest measurement was 0.3 in.; highest was 0.8 in., and there are drifts deeper still. Rain gauge showed 0.2 in. when I went to bed last night around 22:00, so the remaining 0.7 in. is from rain and/or snow during the night. |

Reported snow accumulation is taken from two periods during the day: mid-morning and early afternoon; after each measurement, the snow melted quickly. The remainder of the day, it melted as fast as it fell. Had it been cold enough, the total accumulation would have been greater. As it is, it only accumulated on my deck, bare earth and lawn: concrete surfaces and roadways never did see any accumulation. |
