Woke up to snowpellets and perhaps a thunder clap around 5am MDT. This was over well before the 7am observation (0.8/0.12"). It was also associated with some gusty west winds that flushed us out (going from just under 20F to over 30F). Monthly totals:2.53/21.9", not too shabby. This is the 2nd month in a row with above normal precipitation, and 4th with below normal temperatures (edited, I had forgotten that July was slightly colder than normal as well). |

This is the 3rd latest in 28 years that the coldest weather is this late in the season (record was in early March 2002, even down to -20F, oh well).
Meanwhile, I had told people that getting underneath one of those heavy snowbands was key for getting serious amounts (like Boulder), but that everybody should get at least 2" - so did we! A few puffs of wind before sunrise let temperatures rise above 0F, but it will not get very warm today either. Tmax: 69; Tmin: 41 around 1pm MDT with hail storm(!)/43 since midnight. Bull's eye of a thunderstorm that moved right over us according to radar echoes. Most of this fell in less than an hour yesterday between noon and 1pm (based on neighboring wunderground gage that ended up with 1.9"). Pea-sized hail was 'involved' - most of this had melted by the time I made it up here last evening. The only time I had more precip in 24h in July since 1990 was on Bastille-Day 2013 (2.42" - I just checked), so this was sort of a 1-in-10yr event. I will backfill a few 1/100" inch events since late June over the weekend (0.05" total, so a very small fraction of the monthly total so far (measured last weekend), so the gage was empty when this one hit). There is still a pile of hail on the north side of the house where it had bounced off the roof. |
