After my 7 a.m. yesterday report, snow continue to fall, gradually tapering off, and some melting after it fell. The maximum amount of new snow was probably about 2 inches (early afternoon); when I measured it and took a snow core of the new fall, about 1 inch of wet new snow remaining, water content 0.27"; and by 7 a.m. this morning, about 1/2" of crusty, icy now-refrozen new snow remaining.

2/26/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 4.5 0.68 A comparison to accompany my total snow depth & melted snow core data from today: Over the past 7 days there have been four measurable snowfalls (2 large, 2 quite small), with all cold weather in between and since so melting has been limited; they totaled 11.4" of snow and 0.71" water content. My snow core measurement today, 4.5" depth and 0.68" water content, shows what I usually observe at my site during cold winter months: until we get some days of particularly warm weather, the snow compacts but loses very little water content.

It's hard to come up with an accurate average--more of the area has the larger amount of snow, than the lesser (3-4" vs. 1-2"). I'll call the average 3.5", same as what I reported yesterday.

3/2/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 3.0 M As I've noted before recently, the average depth of total (old) snow around my measuring site is hard to estimate, due to its variation according to the amount of shading from direct sunlight. It varies from bare ground to 4 to 5 inches of snow; there is more ground with 3.5 to 4.5 inches of snow, than there is with 0-2 inches. Trying to systematically measure the average depth with a rule across the whole area, 3 inches is my best average (the average came out to 2.8 inches). But many areas around my neighborhood, open fields or lawns with no shade cover, have no snow at all left on them.

About 1/4 of the area still has between 1 to 3 inches of snow left. I'll calculate that to still average out to 0.5 inch of snow for the area. And, a core where there is 2 inches of snow on the ground contains 0.50" SWE; that likewise averages out to 0.125" SWE averaged over the whole area, which I'll report as 0.12 .
