Snowed lightly until 10:30 PM with only about 0.3" accumulation. Then northerly winds increased, temperature dropped into the 20s and snow fell fairly heavily for a few hours. Mostly just a little slush on the main road, but everything else snow covered. Still very, very light snow falling at 7 AM with low 24F Post mounted gauge with funnel removed 0.42" Ground mounted gauge with funnel left in 0.44" so took average. Snow on grass seemed deeper due to air gap below. 4.2" on snow board. |

sky full of cirrus contrails in the morning. Small lower-based cumulus by late morning gave evidence of abundant low-level moisture. Warm with high upper 70s with active convection over the mountains to our SW-W by mid afternoon. Storms moving south to N. Thunder here by 5:30 PM to our south and then the sky opened up with heavy rain around 5:55 PM. Soon a tumult of rain and large quantities of small hail (pea to small marble) especially 6:08 to 6:18 PM with ground covered by hail over 1" deep. Temperature dropped into the upper 40s with very heavy rain with stiff south winds until about 6:30 PM about 1.87" of rain with melting hail at that time. Two more thunderstorms and more rain around 7 and again 8 PM with hail still on ground and some ground fog. Basement flooding at some of our neighbors from extreme street flooding peaking around 6:20 PM with most intense rain of at least 3"/hour rate. My post mounted gauge read 2.12" when all hail melted. We weren't home to see it, but a nasty hail storm developed just west of us around 4:30 PM and marched across north Fort Collins. Cars dented, garden smashed, likely some roof damage too. Our house/pet sitter was here and got the animals in OK and collected some stones -- hard and mostly round many in the 1" to 1 1/4" diameter range and probably a few larger ones Unfortunately, no hail pad in place. Both the post and the ground mounted gauge had 0.56" -- not sure how much wind came with it, but lots of leaf and small branch debris still here when we arrived on Friday. I've been a home owner in Fort Collins for 35 years and this was my first storm with appreciable damage -- so I guess I was overdue

Clouds thickened and lowered afternoon with thunder beginning to the west just before 5 PM Downpour of intense rain and small hail 5:15 to 5:30 PM with torrents of runoff and minor accumulations of hail -- but lots of leaves knocked off. Temperature dropped quickly to 60F. Cool, moist with low stratus developing overnight. Low upper 50s. Electronic Accurite gauge reported 0.72" -- has reported more than CoCoRaHS gauge in each of our intense hail storms this summer |
