1/5/2018 9:40 AM 0.26 M M M M Total melt from winter storm of Jan. 3-4 .26". The long-lasting cold temps caused by the "bomb cyclone" have made our tiny bit of wintry precip more of a problem than usual: the sleety sheet started to melt by yesterday afternoon, then froze solid again as temps dropped 'way below freezing again. This morning our world has a glaze of ice over every surface, requiring seldom-used boots to walk to the mailbox to collect the newspaper. Clear skies, COLD (27.5, low 19.4), northerly wind 6-8 mph. Barometer at 30.44.

1/13/2018 11:05 AM 1.53 M M M M A weirdly rainy day on Friday. After overnight downpour reported yesterday, we had no accumulation until 2:30p, when it teemed for about 10 minutes, stopped, repeat. Emptied .47" out of gauge at 3p when there was no rain falling. Between 4:45 and 5p, the performance repeated, adding .39" to the tally at 5p. Just before 8p, we heard thunder, and the deluge began again, lasting on-and-off for about 45 min: another .69" recorded at 9p amid a light rain. This morning we had a final .02" in the gauge under mostly clear skies (saw a sundog in a passing cum), wet, cool (51.1, low 48.6), westerly wind at 6-8 mph. Barometer at 30.20, up from 29.93 last night at 9p. By the way, we saw two separate rainbows yesterday, one over the Waterway, the other over the Cape Fear River. So lovely!

1/18/2018 9:35 AM 0.02 M M M M The .02" recorded here was collected at 7p Wednesday. It was still raining when I went to bed. Overnight we had a minuscule amount of "wintry mix," judging from the tiny bit of snow & sleet in the windshield wiper well of the truck this morning. I wrenched the gauge off its mount, and it is now defrosting on the kitchen counter. Critter water-bowl frozen solid. Roads, etc. clear. COLD this morning (34.9, low 31.8), nor'westerly wind 7-10, clear skies. Barometer at 30.49.

7/30/2018 10:25 AM 1.98 M M M M And we roll into the 14th straight rainy day with new accumulations of .85" at 7:30a from a gully-washer around 1a, and a fresh 1.13" from a storm that started at 9a-ish and is still going strong. It's grey, it's wet, it's warm and quite buggy when the rain takes a break. Barometer is at 30.23. My SAD is starting to kick in, a phenomenon I haven't experienced since leaving upstate New York 21 years ago. Another soggy report tomorrow.
7/31/2018 9:50 AM 1.21 M M M M Fifteenth consecutive rainy day. Don't know whether to throw a Monsoon party or start building an ark. Will most likely do neither. Today's accumulation has two parts. First was overnight, filling the raccoon-food bowl halfway. Second bit was from 8:45-9:30a, filling the rest of the bowl, so I'm guessing about .60" each time. Sky grey, as usual these days, mild and calm. Barometer, oddly, keeps scooching up, to 30.27 this morning. Guess that's because it's mostly just raining. There's plenty of thunder around us, but not that many rip-roaring thunderstorms directly overhead.
8/1/2018 9:15 AM 0.26 M M M M By 1p Tuesday, the rain had finished for the day, leaving another .14" in the gauge. By i:30p, the sun was out and the cums were white. Tourists had a glorious beach afternoon ... for a change. Alas, this morning the stoop & sidewalks were wet: .12" fell overnight. Still by ob time, a blue sky sported BKN white cums, the air was warm & muggy, the wind was out of the SSW at 5-7 mph. Barometer up to 30.30. Halloo, hallay, as Charles Dodgson might have remarked.
8/2/2018 9:45 AM 0.62 M M M M Monsoon continues. Daytime was sunny and dry but at 6:45p the sky opened. It teemed for about 15 minutes, then slacked off to nothing by 7:15, leaving .333". this morning at 8:49, same thing happened. By 9:12, it was over, just .29" in the gauge. Sky OVC stratocums with little blue breaks. Warm, wet, Sou'westerly wind 3-6 mph. Barometer at 30.30.
8/3/2018 10:00 AM 2.79 M M M M Thursday saw a little more rain. .03" by 7p. Husband reports it rained most of the night; I know for sure that between 7:40 & 7:56a it freight-trained through before slackening. At 9:15a, there was 2.71" in the gauge in moderate rain. By 10a, just sprinkles remained, & another .05" accumulated. OVC stratus, mild (72° current & low), light southerly airs. Barometer at 30.34.

At time of ob, BKN stratocums gathering to the south, muggy, & light airs. Barometer at 30.14. In other rain-related news, the latest NWS projection has Hurricane Florence taking aim at Sneads Ferry on Thursday, to the north & east of us, putting us on the SW side of the eye, the "bad" side. We're due. Floyd was the last major storm to hit this location, and that was in 1999.

9/14/2018 7:30 AM 2.93 M M M M Hurricane Florence started making herself felt with a brief shower at 1p Thursday and another at 3:30p, netting .14". A few more little spritzes left .08" in the gauge by 8p. Tropical storm conditions prevailed by 10p, and Miss F's eye struck near Wrightsville Beach around 7:00 this morning as a Cat 1. (And on a slack tide, too, which must have devastated the storm-surge ghouls at the Weather Channel.) Needless to say, at ob time, we had OVC skies, rain, and quite a bit of lashing, gusty wind. Put on my slicker and emptied the gauge of 2.71". Barometer down to 29.20.
9/15/2018 1:00 PM 14.03 M M M M It's OVC, rainy, breezy, and we owe it all to Miss Florence. Friday rainfall accumulations: 7.45" at 12p; 1.18" at 6p; .96" at 10:30p. So far today: 1.83" at 8:30a; and 2.61" at 1p. Barometer up to 29.87.

9/21/2018 9:50 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No new rain, woo-hoo. Our puddles are sloooowly subsiding. (It occurred to me that the Island has built up a lot since 1999, and less permeable surface is part of the problem with Florence's deluge.) Mild out under mostly clear skies, northerly wind 5-8 mph. Barometer up to 30.35.
9/23/2018 11:10 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Dry and drying out past two days. Night-time temps in upper 60s; daytimes warm and muggy. Puddles shrinking a bit more every day. wind switched from predominantly northerly to light sou'easterly airs this morning. Barometer at 30.28.

11/30/2017 12/01/2017 8:30 AM 2 0.00 M M Thursday: Clear, chilly (48.0, low 41.3), moderate dew, calm. Clouds began building in overnight to OVC stratocums by this morning's ob. Air is damp, dew moderate, cool (60.6, low 49.3), calm. Barometer at 30.31 both mornings.
2/8/2018 2/11/2018 7:50 AM 4 0.57 M M Cataract surgery on 8th resulting in one farsighted eye & one myopic one. Working on the computer is tricky. Anyway. .02" in the gauge at 7a on the 8th; .01" at 9p on the 9th; .53" at 11a on the 10th; & .01" this morning at 8a, probably from condensation as the back stoop wasn't wet. OVC stratocums & fog, soggy, mild (60, low 59), light airs. Barometer falling steadily from 30.61 at 9:30p on the 8th to 30.31 this morning.
2/19/2018 2/21/2018 10:00 AM 3 0.13 M M Collected .11" at 7p on Monday the 19th from a shower between 4 & 5p. At 9a Tuesday the 20th yielded .02" from overnight accumulation, fog, and heavy condensation. Recorded a trace at 10p that night, and another at 10a this morning. Despite the dampness, milder temperatures got the windows open for parts of Sunday & Monday, and all day & night Tuesday, continuing into today. Airs have been generally light from the south-southeast. Barometer rising sedately from 30.55 Monday morning to 30.62 today.
2/22/2018 2/23/2018 8:45 AM 2 T M M We're having a run of foggy mornings & damp, warm, open-window days, but no actual rain. Winds are generally light & southerly. Barometer is hanging around 30.60.
3/10/2018 3/11/2018 11:00 AM 2 0.00 M M Some doodah cut AT&T's cable Friday evening out on the main drag, so we've had no Internet between then and now. I'm okay with that, but husband was livid. WX's been dry and mild (67°, low 45°), southerly airs. Barometer at time of ob steady at 30.18.
3/30/2018 4/03/2018 12:30 PM 5 0.00 M M No precip accumulation while we were out of town Easter weekend.
4/22/2018 4/23/2018 8:50 AM 2 0.07 M M Dry on Sunday, with increasing OVC. Early morning shower left .07" in gauge at time of ob. Skies OVC stratus, light rain, mild (62° current & low), light airs. Barometer down to 30.37.
4/27/2018 4/29/2018 8:00 AM 3 0.02 M M Brief early-morning shower on Thursday 27th accounts for total .02". By 10a Thursday, daytime skies have been Carolina Blue, mild to warm (range 77-79° highs, 59-63° lows), windows open the whole period. Winds Beaufort 2-3, varying from N to S and back again. Barometer at 30.22 at time of ob.
5/4/2018 5/05/2018 7:50 AM 2 0.00 M M Dewy this morning, but that's it for moisture these late-spring-like days. This morning, SCT thin cirrus, mild (67°, low 64°), light airs. Barometer at 30.00.
5/7/2018 5/08/2018 12:00 PM 2 0.02 M M Brief shower Sunday morning around 10:30a ended our latest rain event. Monday and today mostly cloudy with occasional sunny breaks; mild temps, highs in 70s, lows in lower60s & upper 50s; winds predominantly northerly, stronger yesterday than today, in 6-15 mph range. Barometer generally rising, currently 30.25.
5/17/2018 5/18/2018 10:00 AM 2 0.77 M M Recorded .06" Wednesday at 6:30p, then .48" of overnight rain Thursday at 8:30a. Thursday continued OVC & showery, with accumulations of .06" at 11a & .03" at 9:30p. This morning, another .14" waited in the gauge at 9:30a. By 10a, a heavy shower began that has since eased off, although it's still raining at the time of writing. Consistent OVC, highs & lows in the 70s, winds generally light: southerly at 3-6 mph at time of ob. Barometer at 30.20.
5/20/2018 5/21/2018 8:05 AM 2 4.83 M M Saturday it teemed. We've sat through tropical storms that dropped less rain. Emptied gauge at 5:50p of 4.64", as the storm was slacking. By 9:30 p, only another .05" accrued. Add that to Sunday morning's .14" and it brings the total from Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday to 6.72", almost double May's average rainfall for ILM of 3.74. Pretty impressive. Dry this morning, but muggy and buggy--a horde of green-head biting flies hatched on Friday around 9th Street on Oak Island. Good day to stay indoors.
5/28/2018 6/01/2018 3:00 PM 5 3.48 M M Took a little break from cyber-space, which did my Luddite soul a world of good. Rained every day the 28th through the 31st. Monday the 28th was the biggie: recorded .86" at 7:45a; 1.32" at 12:15p; .90" at 2:45p; and .09" at 7:20p. Tuesday the 29th saw .03" at 10a; .14" at 1p; and .06" at 6p. An overnight sprinkle left .05" in Wednesday morning's (30th) gauge. Sometime during the night of the 30th or during the day on the 31st we got another .03". Nothing today, thank goodness. It's sunny and hot at the moment and the tourists are grateful.
6/9/2018 6/10/2018 10:25 AM 2 0.32 M M Pop-up local rain shower 8:30-9:15 Friday morning left .32" in gauge. Gradual clearing throughout day but OVC kept temps reasonable. /this morning back to normal, BKN cums, hot (89°, low 75°), got sweaty while watering the garden. Light variable airs. Barometer at 30.16.
7/7/2018 7/08/2018 10:15 PM 2 0.12 M M Stormy afternoon on Saturday. Recorded .01" at 1p; .06" at 2p; & .05 at 7:30p. Had a trace amount in the gauge Sunday morning. Very pleasant out due to north & nor'easterly breezes ranging from 6-16 mph over the period. Barometer rose from 30.24 to 30.33.
7/15/2018 7/17/2018 8:10 AM 3 0.22 M M Dry on the 15th & 16th (although OKI reports .11" between 5:00 & 6:00a on the 16th: nothing in the gauge here, however). Big but brief thunderstorm this morning from 3:10-3:30a, leaving .22" in gauge. At time of ob, stratocum build-ups at N and particularly S horizons, with SCT cums between. Sou'westerly breeze 8-12 mph. Barometer at 30.18.
7/20/2018 7/22/2018 10:00 AM 3 2.35 M M Rainy day Friday, several episodes of roaring rain, but no thunder about it. Recorded .12" at 9:30a; .26" at 10:30a; 1.39" at 6:30p from bucketing showers at 2:30-4:30p & 5:45-6:20p; and .09" at 8:30p, at which time it was sprinkling. Must have geared up after that though, because there was .48" in the gauge Saturday morning. Still, the day proved a boon to our tourists, staying dry and partly sunny. This morning dawned under BKN to OVC skies, with only .01" of overnight accumulation. Barometric pressures over the period ranged from 30.18 on Friday to 29.96 at 10a today. Despite all the rain, I can report no puddling. It's really hard to saturate sand.
7/27/2018 7/29/2018 8:00 PM 3 1.31 M M Today, Sunday 29 July, is the 13th consecutive day we've had rain. I've never seen the like of this in my 21 years here, and I'm getting pretty damned tired of all the grey and wet. Netted a mere .04" on Friday (.02" at 10a & .02" at 1p), and even saw the sun for a little while. No such luck on Saturday, with a solid drenching .82" by 9:30a, and .02" more by 7:30p. Today we clocked .23" by 10:30a, and another .22" at 2:30p. It's probably raining now, or at least seriously thinking about it. I'll let you know. We're lucky that sand is so hard to saturate. A stiff hurricane passing by right now could up-end every tree to the north and west of us.
8/8/2018 8/09/2018 8:05 AM 2 0.07 M M Sometime overnight we got .07" rain. Husband reported seeing lightning at 11p Wednesday, but I was asleep by 11:02 so can't say for sure if it fell before midnight or not. Wednesday and today hot and humid, with a few SCT clouds around most of each day. Fairly steady WSW wind, 7-10 mph. barometer fell from 30.23 on Wednesday morning to 30.13 this evening.
8/23/2018 8/29/2018 9:25 AM 7 0.00 M M Dry through out the period, except for the merest trace from a 7:30a sprinkle Tuesday. We did have a little break in temps Thursday to Saturday, but back to regular August by Sunday. This morning, mostly clear (cums at N & S horizons), warm, southerly wind 5-7 mph. Barometer at 30.34.
9/8/2018 9/09/2018 9:05 AM 2 0.01 M M Was surprised by the .01" in the gauge Friday morning, as none of the usual indicators applied except the sleeve on the newspaper. Must have been a tiny pop-up shower overnight. Otherwise dry, SCT to BKN cums, cirrocums and, today, stratocums that started dumping their load about 10 minutes after my ob, so there will b accumulation to report next time. Warm with northerly airs over the period. Barometer currently at 30.13.
9/17/2018 9/20/2018 1:00 PM 4 0.95 M M Sorry. A case of hurricane-overload caused me to shun the computer for three days, but I'm back now. Here's the accumulation line-up: at 7p Sunday the 16th, .33". On Monday the 17th, .01" at 9a & .13" at 2p. At 10p on Tuesday the 18th, .48" from a rollicking thunderstorm occurring 8:30-9:15p. On Wednesday the 19th, nothing. This morning at 11a, a trace, probably from condensation. Our yard is still puddled, a new experience for us. So are the neighbors'. Some roads on the Island are flooded, mostly the usual suspects. On Monday, the bridges reopened to traffic from 6a to 6p, but in generally this corner of southeastern NC is a soggy, debris-strewn mess. We never lost power (it's underground). A water main broke on the beach, resulting in about 36 hours of little to no pressure. Other than that, we have been and remain lucky, lucky, lucky.
9/28/2018 9/29/2018 10:40 AM 2 1.16 M M Good ol' thunderstorm from 8-10a Friday, with a teaser shower from 8:07-8:12, then the main event from 8:29-9:51. the .99" it dropped refreshed all the puddles that had finally disappeared. Brief sprinkle at 1:15p today, then some real showers starting around 5:30p. At time of ob, .17" in gauge. OVC, muggy, calm. Barometer at 30.34.
