10/1/2017 7:00 AM 0.51 M M M M The water year ended with a literal bang last night in a series of violent thunderstorms with very strong winds and pounding rain. The storm right at sunset gave us a beautiful complete double rainbow. This is the longest stretch of significantly rainy days in 18 years here. It’s been an amazing 5 nights for people used to .02 amounts in their gauges.

10/6/2017 7:00 AM 1.12 M M M M 60% then 30% chance of precipitation gave us another major rainfall and put us almost at our calendar year normal precipitation total already. 5 inches of rain have fallen in 11 days: 43% of our calendar year normal precipitation fell in 3% of the year's days. I can’t ever recall so much rain in so short a time.

5/31/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 9% RH with wind gusting up to 35 mph all afternoon. The Santa Fe National Forest is closing tomorrow at 8 am MDT due to drought and fire danger, a good decision. Campers ignored campfire restrictions. NPS is also closing their backcountry. Tree branches on live junipers are brittle.
6/1/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 4% RH yesterday with peak gusts of 31 mph in the afternoon. A huge wildfire began in NE NM, near Ute Park, growing very fast (77 miles away). Smoke from the Buzzard Fire in the Gila was heavy by 5 pm here.
6/2/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 4% RH in the afternoon plus peak gusts of 29 mph. Air very smoky as we are sandwiched between two wildfires each well over 20,000 acres in size.
6/3/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A bit more humidity in the afternoon, but very windy with gusts up to 38 mph from the SE. The wind has been gusting up to or above 30 every day for over a week.
6/4/2018 7:00 AM 0.19 M M M M A lot of lightning and some small hail in the AM, no rain. Then steady rain around 16:00 with no lightning. 80% chance was correct. Finally up to an inch of rain for the calendar year, halfway through the year. Hotshot crew stationed near my house on public land in the early afternoon because of the dry lightning and tinderbox conditions. Sobering.

6/13/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 3% RH with the wind gusting up to 25 mph, 93°F making it another searing day with high wildfire danger. I’m noticing many fewer insects and birds than normal.
6/14/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds! Humidity!
6/15/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 91°F with RH ranging from 53% to 11%. The wind was very steady around 25 mph all afternoon. A big wildfire started 35 miles to the west in the Valles Caldera and grew very fast as we watched the towering smoke column. Everything in the ground that is not irrigated is dying. Even the junipers are turning brown and dropping needles.
6/16/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M So far not a drop of rain despite lots of promising looking clouds and an 80% chance.
6/17/2018 7:00 AM 0.11 M M M M So little rain amidst such a severe drought that this rain had no visible effect on the one hour fuels. Disappointing after so much hype for this storm. Unfortunately many in this area will not heed future flash flood and heavy rain warnings after this event: forecasting and warning credibility has definitely been lost. Less hype, more science.

6/20/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The high temperature was 88°F reached during the afternoon. The RH was down to 5% most of the afternoon with the wind gusting up to 28 mph. We had a red flag last week with much less severe conditions, but no red flag was issued on the 19th.
6/21/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M More wind, more heat, more single digit RH. Very, very dry.
6/22/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 91°F with 6% RH, wind gusting to 25 mph. We had dry lightning at 4 pm. Thankfully it started no wildfires. ~ 400 foot dust devil persisted for about 10 minutes west of here in the early evening about 7 pm. Seeing a lot more of them this week.
6/23/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 93°F high, with wind gusting to 33 mph in the afternoon; RH was 6%. Red flag and critical fire danger, yet again. Few insects compared to a normal year and many fewer birds.
6/24/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 3% RH with the wind gusting up,to 35 mph all afternoon and a high of 93°F. Extreme fire danger. Glad so many public lands are closed.
6/25/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another well-forecasted Red Flag day. Peak gusts were 33 mph after noon. 93°F, 7% RH. The junipers are losing needles and in some cases large branches, from severe drought.
6/26/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Confused about the seeming randomness of Red Flag conditions. Monday's wind and temperature were almost exactly the same as Sunday's, which was Red Flag, but the RH was lower (4%) on Monday and there was no Red Flag.
6/27/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Observed a towering pyrocumulus cloud near Taos yesterday late afternoon as the Sardinas Canyon wildfire blew up from 80 to over 500 acres. Very smoky here this morning. Already hot and dry.

7/4/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 90°F, wind gusting up to 27 mph, 10% RH in the afternoon. A few clouds in the sky finally, but though they looked promising, they were all hat and no cattle. Very dry, hot and dangerous wildfire conditions.
7/5/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A very pleasant day of mostly overcast with yet again a very strong east wind and much higher humidity after sunset (28 mph) until at least midnight. This morning we are forecast to have a chance of rain (!), but it looks very clear right now, and as if high pressure is back.
7/6/2018 7:00 AM 0.30 M M M M The last time we received this much rain was 5 months ago. The last time we received more than .30 was 8 months ago. Our rain amount may not be the drama that meteorologists so love, but we are profoundly grateful for every drop we received. It is a third of our calendar year precipitation to date. Gratitude to God.

7/13/2018 7:00 AM 0.56 M M M M This is the most rain we have received since October 2017 - that is in eight long, dry, difficult months. It came from the NE, not a common direction for weather here, in the late afternoon, accompanied by a small amount of lightning. Immediately after the rain, nighthawks we haven’t seen this summer began flying, calling out enthusiastically to one another, as if to express gratitude for the long awaited rain. The ground is still visibly wet this morning, a novel sight after eight months of severe drought. There is hope now for the extremely stressed junipers and insectivore birds, even though the drought is far from over. Under two inches of precipitation for the calendar year by mid-July is a severe drought.
7/14/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 40% chance was a lot more productive than 60%, which was a bust. Not a drop. Lots of clouds, though!

8/22/2018 7:00 AM 0.24 M M M M A 20% chance of precipitation brought us a good rain, desperately needed. It was a gentle female rain which fell starting around 4 pm and continued off and on overnight and early in the morning, from the south. It was preceded by a huge wind storm with gusts up to 40 mph.
8/23/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We had almost a quarter of an inch when 20% chance of precipitation was predicted and zero when 70% was predicted. This has has happened more than three times in 2018. Where is the error in the forecasting algorithm that causes it to so badly miss its mark? The current forecast model has a high error variance for this location. This article might be a good jumping off point for further questions on testing the algorithm: http://www.math.harvard.edu/~mazur/preprints/meaning_error.pdf
8/24/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Humid all day with levels around 50%, but 50% chance of rain did not materialize. Thankful for 100% chance of irrigation.
