6/24/2018 7:45 AM 0.05 M M M M sunshine, DBOP is very dark and broad today
6/25/2018 7:10 AM T M M M M damp grass, light drizzle. New drip irrigation is working, at least as much as I have been able to get in. The dogs are getting even better at picking salmon berries and red huckleberries along the trails, and seem to be figuring out that there are raspberries and blue berries conveniently right near the house.....

7/18/2018 9:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M dry grass, overcast sky. The brown on the conifers scares me. the little perennial stream is dry. Gordon Creek is so low. So many fires burning already. Blueberries and raspberries love the weather, but only because I keep them watered.

8/7/2018 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Damp grass, cloudless hazy sky, DBOP. Badger dog was guarding a dead baby skunk yesterday evening, presumably that he killed, but no skunk smell. Can skunks be too young to spray? It is a beautiful little creature, very sad.

8/16/2018 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The taller grass is wet. There is dense smokey haze to the ground, decreasing visibility even in the yard, looking like a dense mist, only it isn't.
8/17/2018 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M damp grass, Overcast sky, less haze
8/28/2018 9:20 AM 0.01 M M M M wet grass, clear sunny sky, DBOP, and I am coughing from smoke pollution though it does not look so bad today. Wish the rain had lasted longer. The crazy weather has produced a second crop of raspberries, where usually the second crop has smaller berries, fewer berries, less flavorful berries, this second crop has giant sweet berries in profusion. The blackberries I permit are escaping their bounds, and every berry has a hornet like flyer on it. I felt as if I were walking into a swarm. Blueberries are mostly done on a few bushes, but the rest are weighed down with blueberries galore. Way too many for me to pick.
8/29/2018 8:10 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M dry grass, blue sky with wispy white clouds, haze and DBOP to the west
8/30/2018 9:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M damp grass, fine moisture in the air, overcast sky. I drove to the campsite in N Clackamas, where there was a night rain, soaking those who had adjured rain flies in the warm weather. I gave thanks for rain, and hoped it had fallen at home.
9/2/2018 8:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M this was an error, because reports do not show up right away in the list. 9/02 should be the date that I emptied the multi-day, but I can't seem to delete this and it won't let me change the multiday

9/6/2018 9:23 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M dry grass, pale and cloudless overhead, becoming a dirty off-white to the west, DBOP. Please send rain, to wash the air, and give water to the trees and plants and the low running streams. Blueberries are ending, blackberries past their peak, the second crop of raspberries still ripening a few each day, ripe tomatoes overwhelming but not being replaced by new. Not sure whether it is too late for the drenching rain that will give chanterelles this fall. Almost none last year, carpeted the ground the year before.
9/7/2018 8:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M wet grass, pale blue sky with horizontal wisps of white to the west, but broad and ugly DBOP
9/8/2018 9:05 AM 0.13 M M M M wet and grey, hurray, hurray, rain was here, still a touch of light moisture in the air. If there is at least .10 in the gauge, I figure the trees and plants got a decent drink. Finally. May be too late for fall chanterelles though
9/9/2018 9:20 AM 0.02 M M M M Wet grass. clear sky overhead, DBOP
9/10/2018 9:23 AM 0.01 M M M M Looks a lot wetter than the .01. Still raining lightly when I first go out, stopped now (10:45) I hired 53 slugs to work in my compost bin, offering free transportation (spatula into my compost pail) from the front gardens, strawberries, and tomatoes. They must have stayed up past their bedtimes to enjoy this wetness. Usually they are not around for me to see, just the absent lettuce plants, basil plants, removal of all baby eggplants, demolishing of all tomatoes at ground level, to mark their hard work. Hopefully they will like their new jobs. I never murder those I find, just take them to the new workplace, where I suspect they stay only briefly before heading back to the garden. Like my friend Dan, they probably prefer the freshest of food.
9/11/2018 9:20 AM 0.06 M M M M sky covered with soft white clouds, patches of blue showing here and there. Becoming a off-white, in the west. Not raining when I checked the gauge, but now the clouds have closed and raining steadily.
9/12/2018 9:23 AM 0.29 M M M M raining
9/13/2018 9:20 AM 0.65 M M M M overcast, not raining. Impressive thunder yesterday, .61 in the gauge after, so not much more since. I can practically hear the trees drinking in all this wonderful water. Stream somewhat discolored afterwards, but looks just as low.....
9/14/2018 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M blue and white sky overhead. rain was wonderful
9/15/2018 9:25 AM T M M M M wet grass, overcast sky, being to break up and show patches of blue
9/16/2018 8:55 AM 0.15 M M M M Wet world, wooly white sky. Not raining when I checked the gauge; raining now. I spent Friday chainsawing black tree limbs at a Nesika work party. The first time I have been in the heart of the Eagle Creek burn, the heartbreaking heart, still inaccessible to the public. The trees are now black sentinels, tall columns of darkness against sunset over the Columbia. Nesika burned except for the central stone building, windows cracked, all water reservoir water lines, generator and electric lines melted, but still a beautiful building, much progress made in restoring water. The black tree limbs on the ground in piles could not be burned as slash here. Now we were cutting to firewood lengths, the wood in the center still beautiful wood, somehow even more heart breaking. It will take hundreds of years for an old growth forest again, if climate change even permits such trees in the future.
9/17/2018 9:25 AM 0.09 M M M M Wet grass, stone already dry, soft white sky beginning to clear, DBOP, or at least the soft white is soft off white over the City of Roses.
9/18/2018 9:25 AM 0.01 M M M M wet grass, blue sky and sunshine overhead, DBOP vs a mass of dark-colored clouds in the west

12/23/2017 12/28/2017 9:20 AM 6 1.98 M M there was already .78 in the gauge the evening of 12/22, before it started to snow. I had to leave for SF early on 12/23, so did not have time to melt the snow and ice. Another 1.2 this am. Snow still 3/4 in deep when I came home yesterday. Today all washed away, overcast sky
1/17/2018 1/29/2018 8:30 AM 13 5.75 M M cloudy, becoming cobblestone white overhead. Stream higher than when I left. Granddaughter born 1/18, I am in withdrawal after less than 24 hours without her.
2/14/2018 2/17/2018 9:20 AM 4 1.60 M M 3 days of Nordic skiing in the Methow Valley; left a world clear and dry here, returned to a wet and cold world, happy dogs and cats.
3/13/2018 3/21/2018 9:20 AM 9 1.04 M M barely damp grass, overcast sky, not raining. The twentieth was sunny all day; I came home late afternoon for a stream hike, more trillium emerging, the first trillium with opened flowers, a fingernail moon as I came home in the dark. Today no rain until evening. Snow expected late in the week. The gift of beauty now not so welcome as fruit trees will suffer; not a pollinator in sight.

8/18/2018 8/27/2018 8:15 AM 10 0.98 M M soft, light rain, mist to the ground. Gone 10 days, now enough tomatoes to sink a ship, a few ships, cracking in the wet. asian pears and bartletts and the few secles on a graft are getting close. still with blueberries. Dogsitter took good care of the pups, both happy and expectant, as she usually doesn't take them all the way to the stream, and they know I will.
9/1/2018 9/02/2018 8:45 AM 2 0.02 M M wet grass, sunny cloudless sky, broad and dark DBOP. Camp was great, even got to train in tree climbing, and go part way up a doug fir. NEST has volunteers climb trees to document nests of protected species, shoots up ropes with bow and arrow, then a climber secures a top rope. The wildlife tracking workshop was also great; Cascade Wild has its volunteers document the presence of predators in various places on Mt Hood.
