10/18/2018 8:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Same amount on the wedge gauge. Small snow pellets observed for a few minutes yesterday afternoon. First hard frost of the year this morning (-2 C) although no actual frost was seen on the ground probably due to windy conditions? Dividing my 40 years of precipitation and of "first hard frost" observations into 4 decades, I can conclude that in the 80's, the first hard frost occurred on the average on Oct. 8th, on Oct 11th in the 90's, then on the 12th the following decade. The average hard frost date in the last 10 years has increased dramatically to about Oct 18th, which is also the date of this year's first frost. However, the portion of this increase over the 40 years due to actual climate hange and that due to the increased urbanization (from essentially a rural area to a more densely populated suburban area) is unknown.

11/13/2018 8:00 AM 0.17 5.0 0.17 5.0 0.17 First significant snowfall of the season. Light snow still falling at observation time. New snow depth of the order of 5" and quite moist, but both the melted snow in the gauge and the core sample taken over the ground yielded a melted value of only 0.17". New snow depth varies by as much as an inch from place to place. It would seem inappropriate to report its depth to an accuracy better than half an inch.
11/14/2018 8:00 AM 0.03 0.0 0.00 2.0 M Tail end of yesterday's main event, in the form of a few light flurries that essentially melted on contact but collected in the raingauge and then melted during the day but resulting in no additional accumulation of new snow on the ground. Measurement was actually taken yesterday afternoon before the liquid refroze with dropping temperatures that reached -12 C this morning.

11/17/2018 8:00 AM 0.20 1.7 0.20 M M The actual snowfall depth in the last 24 hours was probably more than 1.7" but settling has occurred since the end of the snowfall yesterday afternoon.

11/19/2018 8:00 AM 0.03 0.3 M 4.5 0.59 Light snow, calm winds at observation time, -3 C. The melted value from core of new snow was difficult to obtain, but the melted new snow collected by the gauge is an accurate indicator of water content under these conditions of calm winds. Depth of old snow is fairly even at about 4.5" over my backyard grass, resulting into 0.59" of water equivalent collected with the 4" gauge.
11/20/2018 8:10 AM 0.10 1.0 M M M Light snow at observation time. The melted value obtained from snow collected by the gauge. Some ice at bottom of gauge due to the melting and refreezing of the light snow yesterday that fell shortly after observation time.

11/25/2018 8:00 AM 0.47 0.0 0.00 M M 0 C, light rain at observation time. Gauge contained a mixture of water and ice. About 4 mm if ice accretion on small tree branches. Could not get any measurement from the snowboard. No snow accumulation. The height of the 0 C isotherm is at 0.9 km according to the McGill VPR (Vertically Pointing Radar, 30 Km west of Montreal, http://www.radar.mcgill.ca/imagery/vertix.html The data of the above link is constantly updated and my comment is valid only at moment of observation) Similarly, a live update at the McGill weather station in downtown Montreal is provided by this link http://www.radar.mcgill.ca/imagery/weather-station.html
11/26/2018 8:00 AM 0.40 0.0 0.00 3.0 0.74 0.5 C and foggy at observation time. The precipitation in the gauge is the result of light rain and drizzle in the last 24 hours. No snow observed during that period. Snow on the ground is very wet, 3" in depth with a 0.74" of liquid content. Light rain beginning at about 8:10 AM right after measurements.
11/27/2018 8:00 AM 0.28 1.0 M M M -1C, light snow at observation time. Total 24-h accumulation is the result of light rain from mid-afternoon yesterday until at some time after midnight when it changed into snow. 1" of new snow on the snowboard.
11/28/2018 8:00 AM 0.51 2.6 0.47 M M About +0.5 C and overcast at observation time but no precip. The precipitation in the gauge was mostly melted. Very wet snow on snowboard, 2.6" and 0.47" of water equivalent, and some may have melted away. Thus amount inside the gauge is more indicative of the precip. in the last 24 hours.
11/29/2018 8:00 AM 0.06 0.0 0.00 M M 0C and mostly overcast at observation time. The amount of 0.06 in the gauge was totally in liquid form, the result of very light rain and drizzle from yesterday. A very thin layer of ice covered the snowboard, the result of the lower temperature at the ground that froze the aforementioned precipitation, not of actual frozen precipitation.
11/30/2018 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M 0C and overcast at observation time.
12/1/2018 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M 0 C, overcast.
12/2/2018 8:00 AM 0.14 0.5 0.14 M M -0.5 C at observation time. Very fine misty rain. 1/2 inch of very wet snow on the board, yielding 0.14" of equivalent water. Gauge with a fine layer of freezing rain encrusted on one of its sides. Water equivalence of its contents was 0.13", the difference from the snowboard estimate being probably mostly a reflection of the measurement error between the two methods rather than a true difference.
12/3/2018 8:00 AM 0.75 0.0 0.00 1.5 0.44 +1C, light rain at observation time. The reported precip. of 0.75" is the result of all rain in the past 24 hours. The old snow on the ground is patchy and very wet. The estimate of 1.5" is very approximate as is the 0.44" of water equivalent.
12/4/2018 8:00 AM 0.25 0.3 M M M -6C and partly cloudy. Total precip. the result of light rain yesterday that changed into light wet snow that accumulated into about 0.3" of encrusted snow/ice on the board as of this morning. No melted value taken.
12/5/2018 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M -9C and mainly overcast at observation time. A few, rare isolated snowflakes are seen to fall exactly at observation time that may not even qualify as a trace.
12/6/2018 8:00 AM 0.04 0.5 M M M -4C, calm winds and very light snow at observation time. The 1/2" of new snow is the result of very light very fluffy intermittent snow that started at observation time yesterday. No core could be obtained.
12/7/2018 8:00 AM 0.04 0.5 M M M -10C and sunny. About half an inch of very light snow accumulated over the last 24 hours.

12/12/2018 8:00 AM 0.08 1.3 0.07 M M -9.5C and clearing. May have lost a small amount of snow collecting the core. Hence the amount measured from the gauge is judged to be more accurate.

12/14/2018 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M -6C and overcast.
12/15/2018 8:00 AM 0.30 0.0 0.00 M M +1C and clearing. Mainly freezing rain and some rain in the last 24 hours that ended late last night. A thin film of ice remaining on the snow board.

12/17/2018 8:00 AM 0.01 0.1 0.01 0.5 0.15 0C and overcast at observation time. A small amount, < 0.1" of hardened snow inside the gauge yields about 0.01" of equivalent water (but the input software would not allow me to enter "T" for the new snow depth in combination with the weighed 0.01" amount). Snow cover on the ground is "crusty" and varied; about one inch in shaded areas and no snow in locations exposed to the sun. The water equivalent of 0.15" has been obtained by taking a core where snow depth is 1" (yielding 0.30") and then dividing by 2 to account for an estimation of about 1/2" average snow cover.
12/18/2018 8:00 AM 0.03 0.4 0.02 M M -9C, mostly cloudy with clearing towards the west. Difficult to pick up all the snow from the board. The true melted value from core should have been the same as the one collected by the gauge.

12/20/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M -7.5 C and clear.
12/21/2018 8:00 AM 1.22 0.0 0.00 M M +2 C and cloudy. Rain has momentarily stopped but more to come according to the radar. The freezing rain of late last night has mostly melted away except for a thin icy film on the snow board.

12/23/2018 8:00 AM 0.05 0.4 0.04 M M -10.5 C and clear. The melted value from the core is a slight underestimate because of the inability to properly scoop up the new fallen snow.
12/24/2018 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 T M -10 C and overcast. Snow depth on the ground is variable and estimated to less than half an inch. Core sample difficult to obtain. I prefer to say "NA".

12/28/2018 8:00 AM 0.41 1.6 0.32 M M -2 C and a very light, fine mist is falling. About 1.5 inches of snow with a crust of ice. Core measurement over the board yields less weight of snow. Not sure why. Has some rain run off the board? It shouldn't have. I made sure of removing all the freezing rain on the outside of the gauge, so I consider its measurement of 0.41" to be the proper amount of total precipitation.
12/29/2018 8:00 AM 0.35 0.0 0.00 M M -1 C and clearing in the northwest. Precip. in the last 24 hours was in the form of light rain or mist. No snow.
12/30/2018 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M -13 C and mostly clear.
12/31/2018 8:20 AM 0.01 0.1 0.01 0.5 0.05 -7.5 C and overcast. Some light snow in the gauge, the result of about 1/10 of an inch of snowfall. Snow core on the ground difficult to estimate.
1/1/2019 8:00 AM 0.83 0.8 M M M -1 C and mostly clear. A 0.8" thick layer of hard snow and ice on the board. The gauge contained mostly water and some ice.
1/2/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M -16.5 C and clear.
1/17/2019 8:00 AM 0.01 M M 6.5 1.06 -21.5 C and clear at observation time. The amount reported is the tail end of the weak system of flurries of yesterday morning. The total snow and ice on ground is the amount reported in yesterday's multiple day report after my 2-week vacation, to which I added the 0.01" of today's measurement.
1/18/2019 8:00 AM 0.01 0.2 M M M -16 C and light snow falling.
1/19/2019 8:00 AM 0.06 1.0 0.05 M M -22 C and overcast. The snow water equivalent taken from the board is judged to be an underestimate. The amount collected inside the gauge is more accurate, the snow having fallen under conditions of light winds.
1/22/2019 8:00 AM 0.06 0.4 M M M -23 C and clear.
1/23/2019 8:00 AM 0.18 2.0 0.20 M M -14 C and snow at observation time. I consider the SWE collected by the gauge to be more representative of the precip.
1/24/2019 8:20 AM 1.26 3.0 M M M +0.5 C and light rain at observation time. Yesterday's snow has been greatly compacted by the subsequent freezing rain and rain down to about 3 inches. I would estimate yesterday's snow to at least twice that amount. Little branches have about 8 mm of ice around them. Did not take core sample over the board because it would not have been representative of the 24-h precipitation.
1/25/2019 8:00 AM 0.15 0.0 0.00 M M -9 C and mostly overcast with a hazy sun rising in the east. The amount reported is the frozen amount from the light rain of yesterday. No snow.
1/26/2019 8:00 AM 0.02 0.2 M M M -13 C and light overcast. The amount recorded above is from yesterday morning flurries.
1/27/2019 8:00 AM 0.01 0.1 M M M -14 C and overcast.
1/28/2019 8:00 AM 0.05 0.5 M 9.0 2.05 -20.5 C and clear. Estimates of total snow and ice on the ground are uncertain as no two sptots on my backyard seem to have the same snow depth, varying from 7 to as much as 14 inches. The amount entered is thus subject to a high degree of uncertainty, considering in addition that there is a layer of ice right above the ground that cannot be sampled.
1/29/2019 8:00 AM 0.03 0.4 M M M -16 C and light snow.
1/30/2019 8:00 AM 0.28 4.0 0.25 M M -11C and clearing towards the west. The snow depth over the board was uneven. Estimated to be of the order of 4 inches, yielding a SWE of 0.25". The amount of 0.28" collected by the gauge tube is judge to be more representative of the precipitation in the last 24 hours.

2/1/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M -18 C and clear. The trace of snow inside the gauge tube may be due to wind blown snow off nearby trees, roofs rather than new precip. from clouds. Will be away for the next few days. My next report will be on the 5th.
2/6/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M -11 C and sunny.
2/7/2019 8:00 AM 0.26 0.5 M M M -6 C and overcast. Precip. in the last 24 hours is the result of mostly ice pellets and of freezing rain. Almost no "ordinary" snow. Half an inch of crusty ice over the snowboard and a few mm if ice accretion still on small branches of shrubs and trees. The thin layer of ice on the outside of the gauge was removed before weighing the contents inside the gauge.
2/8/2019 8:00 AM 0.08 0.0 0.00 M M +5C, cloudy, very windy and in the process of clearing. Pecip. in the form of rain.
2/9/2019 8:00 AM T 0.0 M M M -12 C an sunny. In spite of a few snow squalls last evening, only a trace of snow was captured by the gauge and no snow whatsoever on the board, all this probably due to the very strong winds. The actual precipitation is thus more than reported, at least 0.01.
2/10/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M -15 C and sunny.
2/11/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 9.0 2.26 -14 C and sunny. Measurements of the total depth of snow on the ground varies considerably from 6 to 12 inches, some of which is solid ice. Hence the reported averaged value of 9 inches and the corresponding melted value of 2.26 inches should be taken with caution.
2/12/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M -17 C and high overcast.
2/13/2019 8:10 AM 1.18 11.8 1.33 20.0 M -6 C and snowing. The snow gauge was full, partly overflowing. Its snow water equivalent of 1.14 was slightly less than the amount of 1.18 measured from the 10.5 inches of snow over the board so I took the latter as the amount of precipitation in the last 24 hours. The total snow depth on the ground of about 19 inches is an approximation. Correction at 12 noon after little or no extra precip: Measurements taken at other locations around my house would indicate a higher snow depth of about 13.0 inches and a melted water equivalent of the order of 1.48 inches. I will thus correct my amounts to the average of my initial and current measurements, that is, 11.8 and 1.33 inches.
2/14/2019 8:00 AM 0.05 0.9 M M M -6.5 C and overcast. Tail end of Tuesday-Wednesday snowstorm.

2/16/2019 8:00 AM 0.13 0.0 0.00 16.5 M -4C and sunny at observation time. The snow that fell after observation time yesterday was subsequently all melted by the warmer temperatures, +4C, and the rain that followed during the day. No accumulation over the snowboard. Snow depth on the ground varied from 14 to 19 inches.

3/4/2019 8:10 AM 0.02 0.2 M 17.0 3.17 -5.5 C and clear with some high cirrus. Snow depth above the ground is variable as usual. The previous reading of its water content of 2.23" was probably in error, likely as a result of not having sampled the entire column of snow due to a hard layer just above it. Today's reading of 3.17" should be more accurate.

Snow depth above the ground taken at 4:30 PM but the water content obtained of 3.40" was not consistent with the previous measurement taken on the 4th. The layers of ice near the ground makes it difficult to obtain reliable measurements. Snow depth also varies from 12 to 18", depending on sunny or shady location and wind exposure.
3/10/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M -6.5 C and overcast. According to the radar, precipitation is about to begin.

3/20/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 11.0 5.16 -4C and sunny. Depth of total snow above ground taken at noon, but two thick layers of ice renders the process difficult. In view of the latest measurement of 5.16" being higher than the previously reported amount, previous measurements probably sampled the snow only above the highest layer of ice. The lowest layer of ice just above ground is impossible to be sampled. Conditions this year makes this particular measurement very doubtful.

1/3/2019 1/16/2019 8:00 AM 14 0.92 6.5 1.05 Back from a 2-week vacation in Europe. The observation period is from 8 AM, Jan 2nd until 8 AM Jan 16th. Light snow at observation time. Total precipitation of 0.92" is the result of snow and of some rain accumulation. Snow depth over the board was estimated to be about 6.0" There was nearly no snow on the ground at the beginning of the observation period (except for a crusty snow/ice layer of about 0.5". Snow depth over the ground is now of the order of 6.5". Its water content of 1.05" does not include the last thin layer (~0.5") of solid ice above the ground.
1/20/2019 1/21/2019 8:00 AM 2 0.48 12.5 1.55 -21 C and overcast at observation time. The reported values are for the 2-day blizzard that began on the 20th. The strong winds made snow-depth measurements quite variable, as there seems to be a definite underestimate from measurements taken over the snow board. The snow depth from this storm is estimated of the order of 7 inches. In spite of the windy conditions, I assume the melted value collected inside the gauge to be more accurate. Total snow depth on the ground is likewise a guesstimate due to the unevenness of snow depth caused by the windy conditions. The value of 12.5" is an average of measurements of 9" to 14".
2/2/2019 2/05/2019 8:00 AM 4 0.64 12.0 2.30 +4 C and overcast at observation time. The 3-day precip. is the result of snow, freezing rain and of rain. Depth of core samples over the ground varied widely from 11" up to 16", ans melted values ranged from 1.8" up to 2.9". Took 2.3" as an average estimate.
2/20/2019 3/01/2019 8:00 AM 10 1.03 17.0 2.23 Multi-day report from 0800 EST 19 Feb until 0800 EST 1 March 2019. -14 C and sunny at observation time. Total depth of snow on the ground varies from 14 to 21 inches, with hard layers in between. Extraction of core sample was difficult. Its water content value should be considered an estimate. NOTE: This comment made on March 4th after taking a new measurement of the water content f the core sample above the ground: The measurement of 2.23" reported on March 1st was likely in error. It should have been of the order of ~3.15".
3/31/2019 4/01/2019 8:00 AM 2 0.49 M M -7C and sunny at observation time. Report covering the period 0800 EDT 29 March to 0800 EDT 1st April 2019 while I was out of town. 0.4" of fresh snow on the snowboard.
4/9/2019 4/10/2019 8:00 AM 2 1.26 6.0 0.65 2-day accumulation from 0800 EDT 8th until 0800 EDT 10th. Could not provide the daily report yesterday due to a 30-h power failure from 0200 EDT 8th until ~2000EDT 9th. The 1.26 " of total precipitation is the result of 0.68" of rain/freezing rain registered at 0800 EDT 9th and of the 5.3 inches of wet snow that fell yesterday during the day. This amount is what basically remains on the ground, except in the shaded area of my backyard where some old snow remains. I have thus estimated the total snow cover on the ground to be 6" or 0.65" of melted water.
5/26/2019 5/27/2019 8:00 AM 2 0.08 0.0 0.00 12 C and mostly cloudy.

7/5/2019 7/22/2019 8:00 AM 18 2.70 0.0 0.00 The reported amount of 2.70 inches is an estimate with an uncertainty of about +-0.15". In measuring the total rainfall after a 17-day absence, and realizing that the rainfall in excess of one inch had overflowed into the outer tube but not expecting it to exceed one inch, I was careless in pouring this excess into the inner tube such that a small spillage occurred, which I stopped promptly but not completely, and measured the amount still in the outer tube to be 0.35". I estimate the spillage to be at least more than 0.20 inches but not exceeding 0.50 inches. I have a very high confidence that the amount lies somewhere between 2.55 and 2.85 inches.
