Snowing at time of yesterday's report, continued through the day until after dark. High winds caused blowing and drifting, so ground was covered from 1" (frozen from the warm ground) to nearly 6' in the biggest drifts. Used an average of 11.5", but this may be low because I couldn't get into the deepest places! High winds also likely caused much of the snow to bypass the gauge which had about 8" in it, but that melted quickly when hot water was poured in yielding the small 1.11" of melted precipitation after subtracting the added water. Sunny this morning, but wind is still high and still blowing the snow at report time. |

Very light frost on raised surfaces this morning. Total snow and ice core taken close to the one taken on Thursday morning, after the blizzard, but is still very approximate. Much melting has taken place: Areas that were blown clear or with little accumulation due to the high winds are now nearly clear (perhaps 40%); but areas of deeper accumulation have melted less and are still up to several feet deep. The refreezing made it very hard to get my measuring stick through the snow to check for an average. Had to use a real shovel to dig around the tube to get the core out. Actual snow and ice thickness of the core was 6.4", but this did not include a layer of ice on the ground that was not recoverable. |

Fog this morning with visibility about 1/8 mile. Sleety rain showers started yesterday about 2:30 pm. Snow began accumulating after 9:00 pm with about 1/4" on the deck by 10:00 pm. About 2" on the deck by 12:00 am and about 2.5" by about 4:00 am. These measurements are only estimates. Light winds throughout the storm. Precipitation ended before daylight. New snow and melt measurement likely did not recover the prior rain resulting in lower melt numbers than from the gauge. Old snow on the ground covered maybe 40%, but that varied from zero to 3 feet in the drifted areas, still very hard to estimate the average. |
