Today we celebrate Hogback Day. We have a long hogback to the east of our home. In the fall, starting on October 16 (Reverse Hogback Day) the sunrise on its trip south begins to rise over the hogback. We follow its progress each morning as it travels south down the ridge. It the winter solstice, it rises at a large rock projecting above the ridge. We call it Solstice Rock. Then the sunrise reverses and moves to the north. On February 25 it finally clears the hogback and begins rising over the far horizon. We celebrate Hogback Day as the beginning of spring.

3/14/2019 7:00 AM 0.56 1.5 0.16 1.5 0.16 Manitou Springs dodged the worst of the "bomb cyclone" event that hit the front range, but gusty wind made accurate measurements doubtful (see below). Light to moderate rain continuing from the previous period until midday when it changed to mostly snow after noon. Snow was heavy at times with the addition of wind-driven snow. Visibility was low at times. Snow continued through the day, decreasing by evening and practically ending by 10:00 pm. The gauge caught the rain but once the wind started, it's questionable how much of the snow got into the gauge. The first of the sleet and snow melted on contact and only started accumulating when the snow became heavy. I based the snow accumulation of 1.5" on the flattest and most evenly coated areas I could find. Much of the ground was wind-scoured and snow was piled into small drifts. No precipitation with clearing sky at time of observation.
