Looking back the last 9 years of precipitation totals I found that 2018 has not been the driest year at this station as I thought it might be. That honor(?) still goes to the drought year of 2012. I was curious though, because this year seems worse, so I looked at some precipitation totals in the months of June-September from each year that I have been keeping records. In the June to the end of September period in 2012 we had 4.13" of precipitation. This year during the same time period we had 2.25". I also discovered that we have been in a drier pattern in the summer for the past 4 years. June-September precipitation totals since I began keeping records are: 2010 (4.62"), 2011 (5.47"), 2012 (4.13"), 2013 (5.88"), 2014 (7.22"), 2015 (3.62"), 2016 (2.73") 2017 (2.92"), 2018 (2.25"). While this doesn't tell the complete precipitation story of these years it does show why our meadows are looking so bad and partly at least, why we are having more wildfires. |

A gentle rain shower began around 3:30 PM and lasted a little more than an hour. Most of our showers this summer have lasted less than 5 minutes, so this shower was really enjoyable. |

Temperatures stayed warm enough at this elevation that all of the precipitation was rain. I can see snow to the south of us up the William's Fork valley, but there is no snow that I can see to the north of us. There is fog in the Colorado River valley. |

Precipitation was a mix. At 2:12 PM we had a two-minute shower of what I think was probably very small hail. It was white and hard but was almost sleet-like. After two minutes it changed to graupel. That shower lasted for enough time to cover the ground in white for a while. Around 3 PM we had a snow shower that accumulated on the grass. Some of that snow remains this morning in shady spots. This morning at 7 AM there was fog in the distance that I could see but it was not foggy at this station. It has since moved closer to us but is still mostly below us about a tenth of a mile down the road. There appears to be heavier fog to the east of us. |

Most of this precipitation was snow. Several showers fell throughout the day. In the morning I measured 0.7" from one shower. During the rest of the day the snow melted on contact. Some showers were pretty heavy but still melted soon after falling so it was hard to get an accurate measurement. I estimate 1.5" of snow total which was mixed with a brief graupel shower and a small abount of rain. |

Snow began falling yesterday morning at 7:30 and continued to fall until 5:45 PM. There was another brief snow shower after dark. I measured 1.5" of snow at 11:30 AM. After that time, the snowpack began to shrink because of warm temperatures. Eventually, nearly all of that snow melted. Snow continued falling but melted on contact with the ground and did not accumulate. This morning I measured 0.4" of snow from the shower that fell after dark. I am reporting the 1.5" I measured at 11:30 AM and the 0.4" that fell after dark for a total of 1.9", but for several hours snow fell and melted that I could not measure. |

0.2" of snow fell before 8:00 AM. After that temperatures warmed enough that snow on the ground began settling faster than new snow fell. By late morning all of the snow had melted but light snow continued falling all day and melting on contact with the ground. Snow began accumulating again after dark and by this morning at 7:00 AM we had 1.7" of new snow. I am reporting 1.9" of new snow, but there was more snow that fell and melted. All of the precipitation in the past 24 hours was snow at this station. |

New snowfall is an estimate due to wind during and after the snow. Snowflakes were small, hard and grainy and mixed with what appeared to be small graupel. It was the kind of windy winter precipitation that stings your face like windblown sand and makes it hard to keep your eyes open when you are out in it. Nearly all of the show here fell between about 3:15 PM and 3:45 PM. |

There were several light to moderate snow showers during the daylight hours with wind. At times the snow was falling almost horizontally, so I am certain that the rain gauge missed some of it. After the sun had gone down last evening we had more snow that fell without wind. It was very light, dry snow. I estimate that in all we had at least 1.4" of snow, and that is probably on the conservative side. |

My home thermometers all indicated that our overnight low temperature was in the minus 25 degree range. I find it curious this year that we have not had our usual "Christmas Card" frost when we have been well below zero. This morning there is basically no frost. I'm sure that down by the Colorado river there would be frost, but most years on a morning like today, everything would have at least a quarter inch of frost. |

Unusually warm temperatures for this time of year have really cut down our snowpack which wasn't very impressive to begin with. Large areas of bare ground are showing now on south and southwest facing slopes. It's too early in the year for that to be happening. More snow is in the forecast, but so far this winter the snowfall has largely been little shots of a half inch or less at a time. It would be nice to see enough to really improve the snowpack. |

Warm and breezy here this morning. About 0.5" of snow fell yesterday afternoon between approximately 3:30 PM and 4:00 PM. The snow shower moved in and out quickly. Snow was a mix of grainy snowflakes and graupel and came in with fairly breezy conditions. |

When I first got up this morning the wind was light. At 6:40 AM the wind began to blow harder so I went out a few minutes early to try to get measurements before the wind changed things too much. I didn't quite make it before drifting began, but I think my measurements are fairly accurate however, new snowfall depth could be + or - a little from what I recorded. Total snow on the ground was also tricky. There could be some visibility problems today if the wind continues. |

During the daylight hours yesterday there were intermittent, wind driven snow showers that probably partly missed the rain gauge. I estimate about 0.2 inches fell during that period. After dark another 1.0" of very dry snow fell. This snow resembles very light crystals of ice. I estimate a total of 1.2" fell in the past 24 hours. The snow that fell the previous 24 hours was fairly dense so what we have is a layer of very light, dry snow on a deeper layer of dense snow. There was also quite a bit of drifting at this station. |

I estimate 0.5" of new snow fell here last night but it could have been less. I think some of the snow in the gauge could have been from drifting snow rather than new snow but I'm not sure. We had unusual drifting patterns at this station. Some places that nearly always drift did not and other places that don't often drift did. Most of the drifting seems to be on the south sides of buildings and came from snow that was already on the roof getting blown off. I fully expected to need to plow some drifts on our driveway area where it always drifts but the wind cleaned all of the snow down to the packed base where I've plowed before. I won't need to plow at all. I would sum it up by saying the wind last night sounded like it was pretty wicked but what I found this morning was actually unimpressive. |

New snowfall during this time period had a lot of air in it. It was very fluffy, light and dry which is the reason for the low SWE amount. Snow fell in two time periods. Yesterday morning I measured 0.5" at 9:35 AM and this morning we had 0.3"more at 7 AM for a total of 0.8" of new snow. |

There was a little wind with this snow so measurements of new snow varied from 0.9" to 1.5". I went with 1.2" for the new snowfall measurement. I took measurements of snow on the ground in a wider area today than usual and found that our average snow depth after plenty of wind and sunshine is 9.5", which is a little less than what I've been measuring right in our yard. |

There was a brief flurry of wind blown snow midday yesterday and possibly a little misty rain. Our snowpack depth really dropped in the past 24 hours due to warm temperatures, wind, and a trace of very wet snow. The surface of the snowpack this morning is very crusty, more like what you would expect in mid-March. It could make getting to food difficult for wildlife very early in the winter season which is not a good thing. I will need to do an extended snow measurement walk later today to get a better grip on actual snowpack depth and SWE.--- 10:30 AM update: I took numerous measurements of total snow on the ground on our back property and came up with an average depth of 7.0" and a SWE of 1.07". Both measurements seem low for this time of year. |

I'm pretty sure we had more than a trace of precipitation but the rain gauge was empty this morning except for some frost on the sides. We had a snow flurry at 8:30 AM that was coming down pretty hard for a few minutes, but the wind was blowing hard enough that the snow was falling horizontal to the ground and the rain gauge had to be missing the majority of it. New snowfall depth is an estimate for the same reason. |

I didn't believe the snow to water ratio this morning in the rain gauge. I thought I'd made a mistake, so I took a core of the new snow for comparison and found that the measurements were reasonably close. This is either very wet snow, or maybe we had a little rain during the night. I did not observe any. The new snow may have just settled rapidly in the warm temperatures and wind. We did have wind, but not much drifting. |

Precipitation was rain. There was a dusting of snow that fell around 4 AM but it was not enough to change the precipitation amount much, if any. All that rain on top of our snowpack has made an icy mess that is very tricky to walk on. Snow is crusted where it is deep, but not solid enough to walk on without snowshoes or skis. |

I put out two rain gauges yesterday morning because the gauge holder I normally use which is 24" high at the top of the gauge was only about 3.0" above the level of snow on the ground. My second gauge is on a holder that sits about 4 feet above the level of snow on the ground. My lower rain gauge measured 0.54" of precipitation this morning. I think that is exaggerated because I think it caught some drifting snow blowing along the ground. My taller rain gauge only measured 0.22" of precipitation this morning. I think that is less than what actually fell and I think the wind caused it to miss catching some of the falling, blowing snow. I took a snow core of 3.0", which is what I estimate actually fell here yesterday, although it was hard to tell for sure because of drifting. The 3.0" snow core had a SWE of 0.46". I am reporting the measurements of the 3.0" core with the SWE of 0.46", but that is really an estimate. There was certainly a lot of discrepancy in the numbers this morning! Snow drifts here are from 2 inches to 2 feet deep, so it was very challenging to be accurate today. The structure of the new snowfall is very dense. It is hard to walk in and it wouldn't take much depth to get stuck in if you were driving. |

Precipitation here was rain. Most of the rain fell around 11 PM here. I can see some new snow north of us on Black Mtn. maybe 1,000 ft. higher in elevation than this station. We have one small snowdrift left in this general area. |

There was a shower of graupel, possibly mixed with some soft hail yesterday afternoon. It was enough to cover areas of vegetation but melted within a few minutes of falling. We also had a couple of good rain showers after that and some lightning and thunder. We still have one snowbank left over from winter in this general area. |

0.2" of snow fell from about 7 AM to 8 AM. That snow melted. I measured another 0.5" of snow at 11:30 AM. That snow melted. More snow fell but melted on contact with the ground. There was a little snow and graupel that did not accumulate. There was also a little rain in the afternoon off and on. After 8 PM it rained for quite a while, and then sometime before midnight the rain changed to snow. This morning I measured 1.0" of crusty, dense snow. Total measurable snowfall was 1.7". |

Precipitation was a mix of rain, graupel and snow. There were several different showers during the past 24 hours. Total April precipitation was 102% of the 10 year average at this station, but only 28% of average snowfall for the same time period. Assuming that my math is correct (?) that probably means we had more rain and non-accumulating snow this month than we normally do. |

The majority of the precipitation the past 24 hours came from snow. Most of the snow that fell melted on contact with the ground however, at 5 AM this morning we had an accumulation of 0.2" of snow. Precipitation began as as a rain/snow mix, then turned to snow. Most of the snow melted on contact during the daylight hours but began to accumulate in the late afternoon. 0.3" of snow fell and melted within a few minutes. After sunset the snow began to accumulate without melting. Most of the snow I measured this morning fell between midnight and 7 AM. At 5:15 AM I measured 3.7" of snow. At 6 AM I measured 3.9". At 6:30 AM, 4.4", and at 7 AM, 4.5". That is in addition to the 0.3" that fell and melted, so the total accumulated new snow measurement is 4.8". The new snow core however, was taken from 4.5" of snow. Total snow on the ground where there was gravel, such as the county road, was less than what I measured because it didn't start sticking on the road as soon as it did elsewhere. It is still snowing lightly as I send this in this report. |

Shower began at about 4:10 PM as large drops of wind driven rain. After about 5 minutes there was a mix of rain and stinging, clear sleet. That changed to very large flakes of snow that fell and melted on contact. Finally, the large flakes turned to smaller flakes that began to accumulate. I estimate more than 50% of the ground is still covered with 0.5" of snow this morning, but it is mixed with patches of bare ground where there is dirt.I measured 0.6" of snow last evening when the snow had stopped falling. |

I took another core and it was 0.20". We had a very brief, fast moving rain shower yesterday at 11:15 AM. There may have been a little more rain during the night but the majority of today's precipitation was snow. We had a couple of pretty close claps of thunder at 11:15 PM. Precipitation was rain that fell off and on all day and into the night. Snow fell sometime during the night. I measured 0.7" of new snow at 5:15 AM, but snow accumulation on the ground was less than half an inch. By 7 AM the snow had melted and settled quite a bit. I could hardly believe the SWE from the new snow core, but it was a good sample and I am confident that it was correct. It was very wet snow. Currently we have some blue sky in the west. |

There is a little fog in the Colorado River valley this morning but it is clear as soon as you gain elevation from the river itself. |

There were a few drops of rain during the night but not enough to even make the ground damp. |

Yesterday morning and this morning both registered 28 degrees as the low temperature on my thermometers. Yesterday was the first day since June 23 that we've been below freezing according to my records. |

Trace was from two rain showers. Each shower left drops about one inch apart on the ground. The total precipitation for this August was only 0.36". That makes it the driest August in the ten years I've been taking cocorahs measurements. It is also the driest July/August combined precipitation (0.75") since I've been taking measurements. In general, the area doesn't look as bad as it did a year ago due to the wet spring but things are pretty dry here now. |

I am a little unsure of my report today. There were water drops hanging from the wire fence, the ground was damp, wood surfaces were damp, but rocks on the driveway were dry and tall grass was only a little bit wet. I am not sure if we just had heavy dew or if it rained a little bit during the night. I did not see or hear rain but there was just a little bit of precipitation in the rain gauge so I decided it must have been a trace of rain. I could be wrong. |

Trace was from very light rain in this area. Rain showers were spotty. Driving on the highway just a few miles from here I ran into a good, hard rain, and then drove out of it in less than a mile. |

There's a little frost on the windows this morning and I can see some fog in the valley at an elevation quite a bit lower than this station. |

I noticed just yesterday that our leaves in this area have finally started to turn color, and they turned even more overnight. That's later than usual for us here by a two or three weeks. |

The water year here was pretty dry except for the period of time from March through June. We would have been well below normal if it hadn't been for those wet months. The summer was very dry in this area. |
