Overcast and 78F at sunrise with an ENE wind of 10 mph. VERY, VERY DRY AT MY LOCATION following the warmest and second driest September on record for Daytona Beach. I recorded a meager 1.07" for the calendar month, which is approx. 15% of normal rain and is the driest September I have ever lived through as a life-long resident of central Florida. I observed flashes of distant lightning to the north between 4-5 am this morning from a band of moisture associated with a dissipating frontal boundary over NE Florida and the near shore Atlantic. Doppler estimates up to 2.5" of rain fell along the Flagler County coastline. |

Two very brief light showers off the Atlantic Ocean during the past 24 hours totaled 0.04", barely wetting the pavement for a few minutes. Areas just to the north, south and west measured between 1/2-2". At sunrise today it is mostly cloudy, windy (east 15-20 mph gusting to 25) with sprinkles in the area and heavier showers loom 20-30 miles to the east over the Atlantic Ocean. For the sake of my landscape, hopefully the 30% chance for rain today will concentrate on this parched portion of the Volusia coast. |

A very isolated/brief shower that skittered in off the Atlantic on the gusty onshore flow around 11 pm last night actually was enough to wet the parched ground. During the past 30 days of the "wet" season, barely 6/10ths of an inch was measured. Dew points have dropped to 70F the past several days signaling that the dry season is arriving.

Combined with low humidity, it was our first taste of fall along the coast in central Volusia County. |

Less than 1/10th of an inch fell here as the promising batch of showers that moved onshore yesterday morning dumped much more rain just to the north along the coast and inland than at my location. Still, every drop of rain lately is appreciated given how dry it has been here over the past several months. |

A very isolated, brief "freak" early evening shower around 8 pm that formed just inland tracked ESE across the coast right over my rain gauge, depositing a tad over 1/10th of an inch of cool rain to wash the dust and salt off drought-parched vegetation. While any moisture is greatly appreciated, 3 straight days of measureable precipitation totaled a meager 0.22", and several days of dry/windy weather behind the overnight cold front will quickly desiccate vegetation once again until we get a good soaker. |

This morning's crisp/breezy low of 58F is the first full taste of fall for this part of Florida after a record warm September and first 3 weeks of October. It's amusing to see locals breaking out winter coats this morning to walk on the beach under bright sunshine, but after a long, hot summer the blood does thin and the abrupt drop in overnight temperatures from the 70's down to the 50's does feel rather chilly. |

Areas up the east Florida coast just to the north (St. Augustine) received 15" more, and areas 70 miles to the south (Melbourne) measured 15" below normal and are now in drought conditions. |

Currently 57F, mostly cloudy with wind NNW 10 mph. Notable weather past 24 hours: A wind gust of 30 mph (est) from the NNW at 2:30 am this morning signaled the dry cold front's arrival. The beach was packed but there were few (other than surfers) "braving" the 64F Atlantic Ocean surf. |

64F, overcast with a north wind of 15 mph, gusting to 20+ mph. Given the dry air in place this morning (dew pts in the 40's), and even with rain chance 60% today, I'm not expecting much more than a sprinkle from the solid rain shield lurking over the south half of Florida overnight and early this morning. A good soaker is sorely needed here since barely 1/3" measured so far this month, unfortunately my location in east central Volusia County looks to lie just north of a sharp precip gradient for this rain event. |

Currently 63F, mostly cloudy with wind NE 16 gusting to 22 mph. Interesting weather day yesterday... Under a thick cloud shield and brisk N/NE wind with several periods of light sprinkles (measuring only 0.04" during daylight hours)temperature struggled in the low to mid-60's. A brief period of lighter wind and sunshine around 3 pm allowed for the day's high to reach 68F. Then, around 6 pm a steady light to moderate rain started, which was followed by a heavy rain and strong (30+mph) NE wind between 9-10 pm, producing the first significant rain event since early in February. |

Morning low only dropped down to 68F due to consistent 5-10 mph breeze off the nearby Atlantic Ocean. The waning crescent moon had a distinct, double image visible a few degrees to the left (east) of the actual moon. I first noticed at 6:17am and observed it for approx. 5 minutes before it disappeared well before sunrise. I have never seen this before- my guess is it is related to pre-dawn light interacting with moisture in the lower atmosphere. I woke my bride up to verify and she saw the same. |

At 7 am obsn: 69F, partly cloudy (thin cirrus), wind light SW. Yesterday afternoon a line of heavy thunderstorms moved rapidly in from the WSW shortly before 2 pm, followed quickly by a second cluster of thunderstorms, then light to moderate debris rainfall on the backside of the complex that lated until 4 pm. Outflow ahead of the storm's torrential rainfall produced a 10-minute period of high winds (est gusting to 45 mph from the west) that dropped the temperature from 85F to 70F in less than 30 minutes. |

At 7 am obsn: 77F, partly cloudy, wind SSW 7 mph. Mid-afternoon thunderstorms developing to the NW and SSW collided over my east-central coastal Volusia County location resulting in a 45-minute period of moderate to heavy rainfall followed by several hours of light showers. The total of 1.70" is the greatest 24-hr precipitation event since 2.09" was entered on 4/9/19. |

An extended run of dry days along the coast near Cape in July are not all that unusual in the absence of tropical activity when the western extension of the Bermuda High promotes an early and vigorous sea breeze that pushes convection inland. |

At 7 am obsn: 76F, partly cloudy, wind SW 4 mph. Yesterday's early afternoon thunderstorm blossomed over my coastal location when the outflow from a cluster of distant inland thunderstorms converged with a weak sea breeze. While the downpour only lasted 10 minutes, it put a very beneficial 6/10ths in the rain gauge. Media reports many inland and coastal locations to the south are experiencing chronic flooding due to daily deluges in excess of several inches. At my sandy/thirsty location in central coastal Volusia one block from the Atlantic Ocean, a 2" or greater rain event would be very welcome. |
