Yesterday evening: overcast, very active (flashes every 1-2 seconds) and visibly spectacular intracloud lightning to NNW, but NO thunder or rain at 8:55 PM. Looked again later: three strong, brilliant cloud-ground strokes within one minute to NNE and NE (but no thunder). Looked again: missed the lightning, but one long deep roll to NE at 10:19. Looked again: flash to ENE, followed by a deep roll 29-37 seconds later, i.e., ca. 5-7 miles distant; still no rain. A half dozen drops already on car windshield when I left at 10:40, but none followed as I drove away. No further precipitation. Currently scattered small greybelly cumulus individually and in trains, with some high cirrus near zenith, light gusty (very aged contrails), slightly blue haze toward N horizon, light gusty N wind. |
