10/5/2018 8:00 AM 0.32 0.6 0.18 T M First snow of the winter season. The snow accumulated on decks, and in slight swales in the catchment area. It did not accumulate on the lowest terrace of the front yard, next to the lake, and slightly higher elevations in the catchment area. Less than 1/4 of the catchment area was snow covered. Snow accumulated in the funnel on the gauge, with 0.27 SWE. The cylinder held 0.05 inches of rain that fell before it began to snow. Since there was 0.27 inches of SWE in the funnel, and 0.18 inches SWE in in the snow on the measuring board, snow that fell and melted before it began to accumulate on the board contained about one tenth inch SWE. Some of the frozen precip appears to be sleet, but there is no graupel.

10/20/2018 8:00 AM 0.27 2.6 0.22 3.0 0.20 The snow began falling around 4 AM. The snow sample from the ground had a 1/4 inch of slushy snow near the ground (that was faintly tan colored from the leaves) so some snow melt due to the warmth of surfaces is still occurring. Size of snowflakes is not uniform over time. A brief squall of fine stinging snow will be followed by a period of softly falling large snowflakes, and the pattern repeats.

The sleet was very hard, very white, spherical, and less than 1/8 inch in diameter. The sleet began very abruptly. We got in the car and drove south on the Dinner Lake Rd. to see how large the precipitation area was. One mile south of the station site, on the Dinner Lake Rd., the sleet was coming down harder. Two miles from the station site, the sleet storm was tapering off, and at the intersection of the Military Rd. and CTH 210, four miles from the station site, no sleet fell.

12/3/2018 8:00 AM 0.09 1.1 M 7.0 1.01 At some point in the overnight hours of Dec.2-Dec.3, a brief period of freezing drizzle occurred. The southerly side of the cocorahs gauge had a very light coating of freezing drizzle, so the drizzle must have been driven by a wind from the north. Once again, in the winter of 2018-2019, snow depths on my catchment area will be highly variable. During the recent warm spell, some areas lost most of their snow cover, and other areas did not. the snow depth used in today's measurement was taken in an area that did not lose much of its snowcover previously. The snow sample from the ground is coarse and icy, except for the very top of the sample, and the sample nearest the ground is very coarse, clear ice that was frozen to the ground.

2/1/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 13.0 M Another cold night last night, at 10:00 PM, the boiler sensor out in the backyard registered -23. We have a warm house and are used to cold weather, so we aren't troubled by the temps. the coldest windchill we got was a couple of days ago at -43, which is not a record for this area as far as I know. I have noticed behavior with birds and animals that is new/unusual, however. Pine squirrels and woodpeckers have been staying still in one position at the feeders for several minutes, I guess conserving energy. Ravens do not surround a carcass and feed standing up per usual, they crouch as low on the ground as they can and fluff their feathers when feeding. For the first time ever, deer are systematically going along the lakeshore, pawing at the ice, looking to locate a springhole to drink from. I have never known them to have this much trouble getting water before. There is no snowpack to speak of on the lake (or the land either, it would have been hip deep on me 35 years ago on Feb. 1), so at the shore, the ice must to the bottom, and almost to the bottom farther out, because of the deep cold of the last few days. The rain we are supposed to get will be a bane to the drivers of cars, but a boon to the deer.

2/4/2019 8:00 AM 0.61 0.5 0.41 14.0 M the precipitation fell as sleet and rain. The rain froze as soon as it fell, and is 1/10th inch thick on branches. On red pine needles, the rain encased the entire needle, and is thus 2/10 inch thick. There has been little breakage, only dead branchlets have been shed. The ground is frozen hard, so there is no windthrow that I have seen--it has been calm, anyway. The deer are out clomping around on the shore, still looking for water. Now they have 1/2 of ice crust to break through when traveling. The snow is only a foot deep, luckily. Deep snow and heavy crust would seriously impact the deer and the canids as they moved. The inside of the gauge was heavily coated with frozen rain which may account for the difference between the ground SWE and the gauge SWE.

We were supposed to get 3-6 inches of snow overnight, and all I saw when I got up at 5:30 was a skiff of new snow. It did not start snowing until 7 AM, and the snow is very fine, not wet and heavy as was predicted.16

3/25/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 21.0 5.28 The snow depth is not very different from last Monday, but the SWE has lost 2". These sunny days evaporate water, and the snow crystals get large, and the spaces between them in the snow column increase. south facing lake and stream banks, and road cuts, are beginning to be bare of snow, so the snowpack up here is slowly going. We had an ice storm this winter that heavily coated the trees in a way I had not seen before in 40 years of living here, and then we had heavy snows on top of the ice coating. It looks like there will be a lot of loss and damage to sapling class conifers and hardwoods. White birch and black spruce seem especially hard hit. I hope a lot of them can straighten up. I have seen a lot of black spruce breakage, and they can't come back from that. I hope black spruce damage in the swamps is not as bad as it looks upland.

2/23/2019 2/27/2019 8:00 AM 5 1.01 35.8 10.88 The snow only measures around 35 inches deep, yet we got 15 inches of snow in the last 4 days, including that which fell during Winter Storm Quianna, I think it is named. I think the snow depth reflects the intense blowing and drifting that occurred during the storm. The SWE from the melted snow in the gauge is not accurate. The water content of my core sample is conservative for this area. I live on the SW shore of a lake and this exposure leads to maximum loss of snow cover during sunny winter periods. Other people in this area have over 40 inches on the ground. We had to make an emergency trip to the Twin Cities during the storm on Sunday, and it was an unforgettable experience to be out in the storm--forces of nature in full cry. The blowing and drifting snow on Hwy 29 West was amazing.
